Question about countdown chains

I was thinking about doing a countdown chain for my son who will be 28 months old since this will be the first trip as a toddler, 3rd trip of his life. Do you think a 28 month old will enjoy/understand a countdown chain? And any fun ideas of how to make a fun one!

We make a chain and each link says how many days until our vacation and we decorate them then each day me and my sister have fun ripping off a link. One lady has a thread and she will send you one. We also make and decorate a change jar where we put in loose change we find for a little extra spending money we always get at least 40 dollars
