We have enough points for 3 nights, for our remaining 2 nights we will have to rent points. Once I find availability and somebody who can rent me the nights, do I then make my reservation for the other 3 nights and ask MS to link the reservation? Or is it advised to just do a transfer? Do I wait for the renter to confirm the reservation, or does it not really matter?

Any complications I should know about, or advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Never done it either way....

But if I were in the same situation, my gut feeling is that I would try to do a transfer, that way I would feel in control of my own vacation.

I agree, I would transfer. It just seems cleaner that way, but maybe somewhere will respond who has had experience with that same situation.

Transferring would be the easiest as you are in control and get to make the reservation all under your own membership. However, finding someone willing to transfer small amounts is not as easy as finding someone willing to rent you a 2 night reservation.

If you go the rental route, I would make your three nights first and then seek someone for the others so that you don't commit to them until you know they can get you the availability that you need.

Once both reservations are made, I believe that you and the other owner have to call MS and ask them to note each others reservation # so they will be linked.

Good luck!

I rented points to somebody who wanted to add a day to their reservation. We jointly called MS and had the two reservations linked. MS said that as far as the resort is concerned, they will see only one reservation. Nice think about the linked reservation, I cannot touch it unless the other party is in the call. I know this because I was going to trade banked points for the points I used for the reservation. I ended up just using the banked points on my reservation so I didn't have to bother the renter. Also, I didn't want to use my one-time transfer option on a small amount of points. So, it worked well for both of us. :dance3:

I would make my reservation for as many days as you can yourself. Make sure you chose a room type that will be easier to get and not a specialty type unless you're prepared to check in again and move rooms. As for getting the 2 extra days, it really depends. If you have almost enough extra points for the 4th day, I'd likely do a transfer. Otherwise you have several options using cash, in addition to renting a reservation, you could see if MS has a cash rental and discount or go through CRO. Finally, I know that in the past some have gone to such extremes to keep from borrowing points, if by chance you can borrow points to complete your reservation, that is almost always your best option.

If you are less than 25 points shy of your reservation, you could do the rental points from Disney too. The catch there is that you can only do that at the 7 month booking window.
