If you book your room with the AAA rate yourself then you can call and change it. You can book a room with an AP rate and not actually have an AP rate in hand- you just will show it when you check in. So, yes its a good idea to book a room with the AAA rate and then if you can't get an AP discount at least you'll have some of a discount.
