Ok so my daughter and her boyfriend are pretty much attached at the hip - so there is a good chance he might be going with us on our trip.

We only have 2 table service meals planned anyway: Biergarten and Crystal Palace.

So my question is would it be better to call now and add 1 more to our party of 5 then if he doesn't come we can just tell them it's only a party of 5.

OR do I wait till it's closer and then add him

Or just tell them we have one extra person when we get there???

I've never had to do this before so I'm not sure the correct way to do this:confused3

Thanks is advance!

Kudos to you for considering it. I know many parents who would not take their daughter's boyfriend on a trip like this.

To me, their personalities and the amount of time they've been together make a difference in how I would approach this. If they've been together only a few months I probably wouldn't plan anything very far off. If he's been a staple in your family for quite a while, however, and your family and his family have already discussed his joining you on the trip, then yeah, I think it's safe to change your reservations now. It could definitely backfire if you "surprise" the podium with an extra diner when you walk in to the restaurant.

I guess I should have mentioned she's 18 and he's 21 so his parents aren't an issue.

He gets along great with our family and we are renting a house (he would share a room with my son) so a hotel isn't an issue.

I really didn't want to spring an extra person on the podium. But we are a party of 5 and are usually seated at a table for six anyway....

Maybe I will just call and add him......

don't call and add, when you check in at the restaurant just tell them 6. You don't want your reservation inadvertenly (?) cancelled

Just check online and see if there is availability for a party of 6 during your time frame. If there is, call in and make the adjustment.

If there isn't, I'd let sleeping dogs lay and just show up a little early for your reservation. People show up all the time with one more or one less, and the masters at the podium manage to make it all work out in the end.

Maybe I am too much of a rule follower but I would call and add. They won't cancel your exisiting ressie until they have a new one for you. So you really having nothing to lose. I'd hate to have that worry at the podium every time...

Usually a party of 5 is seated at a 6 top so it's not a problem, but at the Biergarten almost all of the tables are for 8 and you're usually seated with other parties to fill all of the seats. I would check on line and make an ADR for 6, just in case.
