Question about 1 night in Disney?

Not sure where to post my question, but here goes. We are flying in Fri, May 30, 2003, arrive into Orlando at 2pm. (Will need to get rental car, luggage etc.) Going on the 7 day cruise on May 31. Where should we stay Fri night? If we stay at a Disney resort, does that mean we can cruise around any of the resorts? (Example: hang out at Poly and watch the Electric boat parade or the Boardwalk and watch Illuminations?) Do you have to be Disney resort guest to do either of the above? Anyways, seems silly to buy tix for the evening at any of the parks. We are Disney novices (DH, DD, and DS have never been!). Not sure what to do from when we arrive in Orlando until when we drive to the ship Sat around 11am. I appreciate all suggestions. Could we stay offsite and do anything "Disney" wihout buying tix? We will buy them if anyone thinks it is worth it for a few hours. ALso would consider Universal too...very unsure! (The Radisson near the ship is sold out, that was a previous suggestion). Sorry if this is a little disjointed....kinda like our plans!

Oh yeah, also suggestions for one night post-cruise? We get into port Sat am, could be in Disney area by 10-11am. FLight leaves Sun at 7am....(Your suggestions for hotel and park welcomed)

If you can book a room at PORiverside(used to be DixieLandings) you could take the free boatride to downtown Disney. Lots to see there. I like Magic Kingdom or Epcot so much I would pay the one day park fee and enjoy either for the day/evening. I think on that night the park would be open late? Check their hours.
