Queens don't separate? Recommendation for mother son combo, please

Adult (or so she thinks) daughter says sofa bed is very comfortable. However, she is only 5'2" and weighs 110 at best.

By the way, I like titles that are not ambiguous, saves time opening or not opening threads when you know what the person is asking. :-)
I knew exactly what she meant by the title. Maybe it's because I also travel with a son or two sons.

Usually my DH Aand I cruise, so it’s OK. I am sorry that there cannot be two real beds. I would like to travel with a girl friend. Many couches are not comfortable to sit on, I cannot imagine sleeping on one.
I love the split beds. My youngest is 5'7 and my oldest is 5'10. Neither one is done growing. Im not sure how much longer they'll fit on these beds. I'll switch cruiselines before I take the couch.

But these are not like regular hide-a-bed type couches. The mattress is completely different from what you sit on and is not folded up inside. It flips to a mattress when it's a bed.

Ok...thank you. I never knew that.

They are not "faux" beds. They are actual beds. The sofa bed (in most rooms) is not your typical fold-out sofa. The back of the sofa folds down and inside it is a standard twin sized mattress. Same for the upper bunk. And the murphy bed. All twin sized, actual beds.

That's encouraging, thanks.

When do I tell the good folks that we would like a second bed set up? When we reserve or when we show up? Seems like they would want to know ahead of time.

Your stateroom host will introduce themselves on the first day. They hang out in the area and try to catch everyone to say "hi". They will probably ask but if not just let them know. The DCL stateroom hosts are some of the most amazing housekeeping there is!

It's very easy for them to turn the sofa into a bed. You can just let your stateroom host know when you get to your room. We've had them come in and ask us which bed they should make up for our DD (since there were options) so it's not the kind of thing you need to worry about ahead of time.

And as a PP said, it's not a faux bed. It's a real twin mattress and not uncomfortable like a pull out sofa bed.

Thank you. I should know that Disney would make it easy.

I just put a three day hold on a room, which I didn't know you could do, it's only my third Disney cruise. I mentioned the dates to my son, wondering when to mention it to my husband :rolleyes1

What MelSpees and PrincessShmoo said. I have personally slept several nights on the sofa bed that flips over to be a twin bed. It was very comfortable. IMO, more comfy than sitting on the couch! :flower:

I’m shocked to find I’m in a minority that finds the sofa bed like sleeping on concrete. I’m 5’4” and any taller and I’d be over the edge, too. If you or your son are used to a softer mattress, you’re going to be fighting over the queen. I typically sail with my parents, and by default they get the “real” bed. I’m used to a memory foam and pillow top mattress; we’ve had staterooms with the Pullman bed, so I’ve preferred that but still request a foam topper. It helped, but I’ve since purchased an inflatable camping pad that I saw recommended here on the boards. I’ll be seeing how effective it is in November. If you like a firm sleeping surface, then you’ll be fine.

If he's like my DH... after PIF! :goodvibes

Fortunately after 36 years he doesn't want to break in a new wife :love2:

I think I can handle just about anything for five nights, and being the shorter one I'll probably volunteer for the sofa bed. Time will tell. Good luck in November.

My kids sleep on the sofa bed/murphy bed so I have never slept on it. Mama gets the queen bed. :P But if I were in your situation and the bed was that uncomfortable for me, then I would just book my own room.

DH has restless leg syndrome that causes him to toss and turn like a washing machine on agitate mode. One particularly bad night many years ago he switched over to the sofa. Since it was the middle of the night, he just pulled the back of the sofa down all by himself to reveal the actual bed. He hasn't returned to the queen bed ever since! He's 6' tall and has no problem fitting on the sofa bed. He says it's very comfortable and sleeps well on it. Your son should be fine. Have a great cruise!

My husband and I wish they had the beds that separate. We sleep on Twins pushed together at home because he tosses and turns. A queen bed on the ship is just so small and uncomfortable for us. I end up sleeping on the couch because I am shorter and I find it comfortable but it is not the same as a bed.

depends how tall you are, anything over 5'10 and your legs will be scrunched on the pull out couch. I come from a family of tall ogres LOL!

I miss the beds that separate. It seems unfair to make one person sleep on the sofa bed (I am amazed that so many people find it comfortable) I find it hard, too short and not at all good for sleeping but don't want to make my 70 year old mom sleep on it either. It was so much easier when they could just separate the beds and we didn't have to think about it.

My husband has restless leg as well. (Long plane rides drive him crazy.) I've been known to sleep on a few sofas!

Hope they're friendly ogres :thumbsup2

And, as someone mentioned, when two friends are sharing a room and paying the same amount, how do you choose who gets the bed and who gets the sofa, no matter how comfortable.
