We woke up early in the morning and the guys went down to the clubhouse to get some extra cash out of the safety deposit box. While they were there they enquired about Kennedy Space Centre and came back with the news that it was fully open but had suffered from some big aesthetic damage during Jeanne. I didnt care about aesthetics so we split into two groups. Scott, Roger and I headed east to Cape Canaveral whilst Linda and Graham stayed in Orlando for a final day relaxing before we headed home.
I really enjoyed the journey to Kennedy as we got to look around at some spectacular scenery and dozens of alligators. When we got to Kennedy we chose standard admission and headed to the rocket garden first. We spent a good hour walking around the rockets going ooooh thats big! Oooooh thats even bigger! The Saturn 5 had been moved so Scott promised me Id seen nothing of big rockets yet! We took lots of silly pictures of each other posing by giant exhausts and walking across the orange bridge the astronauts use to board the shuttle. Next we joined the coach tour and headed out to the viewing platform. Scott doesnt like heights so he didnt come to the top. Me and Roger went up and took some great photos of the views and the shuttle launch pad in the distance. I couldnt believe I was actually seeing it and, even though I was slightly disappointed at not seeing anything go up, just being there was incredible. It even rekindled my childhood interest in astronomy so much Im working towards a science degree a year later!
Once wed had enough of looking at the views, looking at the scale model of the shuttle and its launch pad inside and watching the film, we boarded the coach to the next building. This was where Saturn 5 was held. I walked inside and the rocket took my breath away. Its huge and you really just cannot imagine how huge until you see it for yourself. We managed to take a picture of me with it and Im just a speck by the floor! Its a truly frightening thought imagining that thing filled with explosive rocket fuel, then imagining those guys climbing on top of it when its lit! They were either the bravest men who ever lived or the most foolish! We grabbed a burger and fries, complete with complementary space shuttle beverage holder, under the rocket before heading off to tour the building. We went into the old mission control room and watched the video show in there; we also saw the moon landing show in another room and touched the moon rock. I think I managed to bore Roger by reading every single plaque in the building!
We grabbed a coach back to the Visitors Centre and I figured that if we moved it we could just catch the final showing of one of the Imax films. We were some of the last people in the room but we made it and managed to see the film about the building of the space station, the shots of space were even more awe inspiring on the Imax screen. After the film we went and looked around the replica space shuttle, I was surprised how much is devoted to cargo storage, and we also went around *** which was a little boring as it seemed to be mainly aimed at little kids. Finally we had a look round the gift shop where I bought myself a great t-shirt and I got mum a postcard of the Earth as seen from the moon, one of her favourite images. We drove back and stopped off at Subway for a sub before heading back to the apartment to pack. Linda and graham were already there and mostly packed. It didnt take long to get most of our stuff into the suitcases and we spent our final evening chilling at the apartment.
