Question of the day: 5/7: Have you had a cooking mishap?

Tomorrow I need to do some baking, which makes remind me of the times I've worked on baking cookies from scratch after we married and I was taking something over to my husband's unit during first Christmas. I'd never really baked much from scratch so you can imagine the mess I made. I didn't know how things like pecans or chocolate chips would sink to the bottom of breads and cookies or how to shape in small portions instead of giant cookies. I also really had to work on tempering eggs to make pecan pies and puddings or curds. There was ALOT picking out scrambled eggs as you can imagine. Anyone else have some cooking/baking mishaps?

I'm sure I have, can't remember a specific one.

And I love to bake.......used to do it a lot.
DH's work would buy supplies for me to make cookies once a week. Did that for over 9 years. And only did a recipe a second time once or twice. They were my guinea pigs.
Doing some baking with DGD now. She likes it to a certain part and then stops (she is now 6). She likes to sample all the ingredients no matter what. Likes most.....salt, not so much :)
About time to start DGD on it. He is very particular, so not sure how it would go. He hates getting his hands dirty (he's 3)

We watched a movie today.......Spenser Confidential. Mark Wahlberg. It was pretty good. Netflix original

Dinner tonight will be 7 Layered Salad. We ate big lunches, as usual on movie day

Hello everyone, mind if I join midway? Too bad, lol, here I am anyway 😍
i need a friendly group, amd I glanced at a thread or 2 and omg 🙀

I can’t really watch many Movies, I have the attention span of a gnat. But, I have been watching re-runs of 90210 nonstop. Lol.

My husband is still on oxygen in the hospital, but we did get a face time in. and he Is doing much better, I’m sooo relieved,

I am so glad you are here! Please come back when you want! We are nice group and can help just pass the time or somewhere to mind/heart dump when need be. I'm so glad your husband is doing better. I've been praying all I can.

Never. I'm practically perfect. :rotfl2:

Would you rather I recount the story of my first turkey day dinner, where I undercooked the inside of a 26lb turkey by about 5 hours and overcooked the outside by about 2 hours? :rotfl: Or the time I was making an amazing pork roast, in a glass baking dish (because someone didn't think about using her metal baking dishes for this); had a roast well browned in the oven, and THEN poured a cold beer into the hot glass pan. BOOOM glass shards all over the oven. The first time I made Greek lemon chicken soup, I had an issue with proper tempering...ended up with scrambled egg in the soup (where there wasn't meant to be any).

But that's ok, because each one of those (and the many more that I just don't have the energy to type out right now, haha) taught me how to be a better cook/baker. DH still likes to rib me over the turkey.....and that was, oh jeez, 19 years ago this November!

DH has had his mishaps too. Those Bear Creek soup mixes? He decided to make a chili one...using shrimp for the meat. :crazy2: Shrimp and green chile, yes. Shrimp and a chili soup mix meant for beef? No.

Picked up 2 pairs of sandals at Kohls today (did curbside pickup, online order)...I really like the Sanuk yoga sling sandals, and with Kohl's cash, coupons and discount codes, I got them for $22 each! Got Firehouse subs for lunch, since it's right by Kohls and Fresh Market.

Dinner tonight was a pretty yummy one! Crab cakes, a zoodle pasta parmigana, and some fresh sourdough bread. Going to take the leftover crab cakes and sourdough, and whip up a hollandaise and a poached egg for breakfast....my first hollandaise and my first poached egg. How hard can they be, right? :snooty:

Congratulations, Matt! 👨‍🎓 🎉 What an accomplishment! It must feel so nice to be done! And good for you, too, Tina, for sticking with it and taking more classes! 👍 I’m sorry your mother is having such a rough go and am praying that things ease up for her. Enjoy your trip your MIL and grandma are fortunate to have you both!

I can’t recall any cooking mishaps right now, but DH and I still laugh that our very first real disagreement was about whether to break the spaghetti or not prior to cooking! :lmao:

Cooking mishaps??? To many to recall! I do fondly recall the evening my boyfriend - now husband - came over for a family dinner for the first time (I still lived at home). Spag & garlic bread, only I grabbed the powdered onion, not the powdered garlic. Don't worry, I use real garlic now!!!
Turns out he didn't like pasta either! That was 30 years ago....

(Not to be stirring the pot, but for the record I've never read or seen a Twilight book/movie either, and don't get the attraction...and even more shocking, I have never watched Friends or Big Bang Theory. Tried to read those dang Grey books but couldn't get thru the first bit of the first one cause the writing was awful. I've also never been in a Waffle House. I refuse to use anything other than real butter, and I drink wine out of a box, but not cheap rum, and will not drink sparkling wine - real champagne or nothing. And iceburg lettuce - why, when you can get green or red leaf or anything else?)

Dinner this evening ended up being ribs from local farmers market, along with some potato salad and green beans - we had to haul the pups to the vet for some routine vaccines this evening and I knew we needed a quick and easy and already to go supper.

Beautiful day here today. DH came home early enough that we took a 3 mile hike. It was beautiful in the woods and by the creek. And it smelled good in the fields.

Dinner was a WW meal of salmon with roasted chickpeas and vegetables. It's a little spicy and very tasty.

I have never read or seen Twilight either. Or any of the Shades of Grey.

Question of the day: 5/7: Have you had a cooking mishap?
I can't think of any major ones. More involve injuries. One that DH and I always remember was while I was pregnant with DD, so about 34 years ago. I was making scrambled eggs. I picked up the skillet off the burner with my right hand and then pregnancy brain kicked in. The pan must have been heavier than I thought so I took my left hand and placed in under the skillet to support it. DH said he watched me do it and couldn't say anything fast enough. Needless to say, I burned my hand before I set it down.
I also have a burn scar on my arm from taking plastic wrap off a dish of asparagus coming out of the microwave causing a steam burn.

Gratitudes:
I made dinner without injury. LOL
Lovely walk in the woods with DH.
Cleaned and organized my desk.

Cue "School is out for summer...." Matt is officially done with school and got his grades and he is all done. I finished my accounting class
and did fine. I'm not sure what class I'm going to take this summer. I'm thinking updating my Microsoft skills so I can be more efficient.
CONGRATULATIONS TO BOTH OF YOU!

Dinner tonight was college boy's choosing. KFC..original...I'm not big KFC fan at all but it's fine and he should since it's his night. I'll do something nice for his actual "graduation" day.
LOL I haven't had KFC since I was on vacation in CA in 1995, ate a a KFC , got food poisoning and spent 3 days sick as a dog in the hotel room, but to each his own!

My mom is pretty sick from treatment, which was expected and she is dangerously low on sodium and her iron is low also. She is likely going to need a blood transfusion soon but good news it's about almost 3 months since the last so that's positive. She was in good spirits tonight and hopefully gets her mother's day box soon.
I hope she feels better soon!

Tomorrow I will make my MIL a pound cake for her birthday/mother's day gift for Saturday's visit and prep some foods to take up to Michigan for Matt's grandma's freezer. We are heading up to see her and stay a few days to break up our routine and keep her company. That'll be nice at least with gorgeous view Lake Chicago.
Glad that you are getting away, you need a break from everything at home!

Thank you again for all that keeps me company on this thread. I really need it especially while things are changing and trying to figure out the new normal.
I think we all need this thread. I look forward to it every nite!

I really can't think of any cooking/baking mishaps. I have always been pretty careful. I finally finished up all the weeding and mulching of flower beds, got my herb boxes ready to plant and did laundry, so dinner was a very easy one. Farfalle pasta, marinara sauce, meatballs, and garlic ciabatta rolls. It was a nice Spring day, 66 degrees and sunny, but very windy. Tomorrow the cool down starts, I am NOT looking forward to the cold tomorrow nite or Saturday morning!

Wow! This reminded me I once had a crock pot explode and had the - I think they were glass too, or maybe ceramic - shards all over the kitchen. That was scary AND having to throw the food away! 😬

Question of the day: 5/7: Have you had a cooking mishap?

I'm sure I've had lots but one that just popped in my mind when I read the question...It was while I was taking care of my mom and as I've said before she's a little difficult so I'm sure I was preoccupied with that. I was making a meatball casserole, I think it was supposed to be like meatball sub. My family is all about the pasta and were complaining about why we couldn't just have regular pasta and meatballs so I was annoyed with them. The casserole was done so I turned the oven off and got my mom ready to eat....when I went to grab the casserole out of the oven, I realized I had turned the broiler on and didn't turn the oven off like I thought. The cheese on top was completely burnt, I was so upset so everyone was like its ok, we'll just take the cheese off the top and eat it anyway. It was terrible, even with the top layer off, you could still taste the burnt. :sad2: It was nice of them to try and eat it though...

I have read the Grey books, and didn't enjoy them. There are other books out there in that subject that are more to my....well, let's keep it Dis friendly and just say better written.

I think it's fine that you've never done/like any of those things. I like Friends and BBT; I love Waffle House (their hashbrowns (smothered, covered, chunked and occasionally countried as well; and waffles). I also only use real butter; I don't drink wine out of a box, only because I don't drink that much wine and I would be worried about it going bad too soon. I do drink sparkling wines, but they aren't my preferred bubbly, and never ANY kind of cheap hard liquor! I like iceburg lettuce, but only in certain things (beef tacos, BLTs); for sandwiches and salads, it has to be romaine or a leaf lettuce or even spinach.

Now, I might question your...thought process...if you posted that you dislike everything Disney/Pixar/SW (because then WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO BE ON A DISNEY BASED MESSAGE BOARD????????????????).

:yay:Congratulations to you and Matt! I am so sorry to hear about your Mom. Prayers she feels better soon. Have a wonderful time with your MIL. I forgot where you are from but enjoy a change of scene. Stay safe!

My absolute thanks always to all for keeping this thread kindly going. It really does mean more every day to me to be able to check in with all of you and know we have this welcoming space to be.

Today has been rather frustrating. Most unkind encounter with a neighbor. Keeping her in prayer, of course. Still, so hot in here :( We finally did get the okay from the property manager to order the two new wall a/c's. The maintenance people will pick them up and install. We are keeping in much prayer the owner will ultimately decide to offset some of this cost.

I am extra grateful today for:

Three more birthday cards in the mail that I am saving to open until my birthday next week.
A sweet PM from a fellow friend in this kind thread.
A very kind call from a church Elder and friend.

From another thread on here (one of the positive ones)! Memory of a lost item that God returned, of course, just on time. To I pray bring each of you an added smile this evening, here is "Monkey's" story. My Dad had a very close friend who he considered an extra father to him especially after my Grandpa died. George passed away semi-unexpectedly around Thanksgiving in 2010. At that time, George had been living with a room-mate to help him offset the cost of his rent. We still keep in touch with Tony now.

From as long as I can remember, I had a small rubber monkey holding a banana toy. Monkey vanished after the 1994 earthquake. My Dad and I (George, too) all assumed it got lost in either the move (building was condemned) or somehow left behind in the rush to move. I had every now and then asked God to find the monkey more because I also know Dad was still wondering what did happen to it and it had been with me for so many years. Dad helped Tony to go through some stuff in George's apartment. George had an old style bed that had cubbies as part of the bed back. I will always remember my Dad telling me Tony had found monkey in one of the cubbies (with a door on it) by George's bed. We THINK George had looked everywhere before. Point is God as Christmas got closer that year especially, "found" Monkey. 🐒

New bride, new apartment with new appliances. I preheated the oven and when I opened it to put the food in the oven, the broiler pan was on the rack where I wanted to put the food. Took oven mitt, laid the broiler pan down and cooked. It wasn’t until the next day when I went to pick up the pan that I found it had melted and burnt the rug where I had placed it!

We found a remnant rug store, bought a piece of rug which we pieced into the carpet, whew!

All within the first week at home in the brand new apartment complex.

I hope you all do not mind another newcomer, I have been looking in and really appreciate the kindness and civility demonstrated on this thread.
I had a cooking mishap just a few nights ago, I made tuna casserole and both my DH and I both commented that something seemed a bit off. We had the leftovers the next night, when it finally dawned on me that I didn't add the tuna:sad2::sad2:.
When I laughed about this with my adult DD, she said, "Mom, you did that once before"

Hi @dazedx3 :welcome:
Glad you are here. This a fun and kind group.
Your tuna-less casserole story is funny. Sometimes the light hearted memory is the best part of the meal. :flower:

Oh boy - did I have a DOOZIE and an unusual one at that. I do a ton of cooking for people in need and cater small events; it's kind of a ministry. This weekend my BFF and I had a list of widows and single ladies in isolation we wanted to try and raise their spirits. We schemed up an elegant little menu and presented them each with a fancy, beautifully-plated dinner on Sunday evening that was a much needed gesture of TLC for all involved. :goodvibes

One of the courses was a shrimp cocktail, which I plated just immediately before walking out the door to deliver so it would stay safely cold. I then rushed out and returned several hours later; dreading the disaster my kitchen was. DH & DS had sweetly tried to get started on cleaning up for me and since it was late evening and I had to work the next morning, I decided to call it a day and "deal" the next evening when I got home. Fast-forward to Monday evening; I walked in the house and immediately smelled something wrong, very wrong. The garbage had been taken out and my preliminary investigation couldn't pin-point the source of the smell so I finished up the dishes and scrubbed everything down and hoped I was just imagining things.

Tuesday morning at about 3:00 am I was awoken (in my bedroom behind a closed door on a different floor than the kitchen) by an overwhelmingly noxious smell. I couldn't ignore it and got up and headed for the kitchen. After taking many sickeningly close sniffs around the room I opened a little used junk drawer to find the packaging from the shrimp with two putrifying shrimp still inside. How it got there is truly a mystery. :crazy2: Lordy...I have seriously never smelled anything like it!! I raced to the curb with offending member and spent the next 2 hours Pine-Sol'ing the bejebbers out of every surface in the place with the doors and windows wide open. DH got up around 7:00, headed for a cup of coffee and said sweetly "It smells nice in here this morning". :rotfl2:

Thank you everyone 💕

I don’t have many or any cooking mishaps, I hate to cook. I’m actually horrible at it. My husband says it’s because I don’t cook with love lol. I do the job because it’s a necessity. I’m not really an eater, a foodie at all. I wish there was a pill to take for each meal, and it gave all the vitamins needed. My husband enjoys it, glad for that. These days it’s a lot of easy things for my son and myself, I’m still healing from my ribs, and too stressed.

Today was a gorgeous day, so I sat and rocked outside for a bit. I stared at my pool, aNd long for summer. We may get bloody snow,🙄 not much but still, this weekend, next week is more springlike temps.

I will have to venture out tomorrow for a few things, and I’m scared. My city is one of the worst in the Country in numbers and deaths, and the army is everywhere I’m told, I’ll be quick, aNd safe, get home and wash up right away.

Eta: congrats to you and Matt ! that is wonderful

Well, not in the sense of the food turning out badly, but the first thanksgiving after both our parents passed, my sister and I were nervous about preparing the holiday meal. She got up early to start stuffing the bird and turned on the oven to preheat. She hears kind of a poof noise, and turns around to find flames in the oven. Turns out one of the elements went bad. So, we have a whole meal to prepare and no oven. We found Mom’s countertop roaster in the basement, and just managed to squeeze the bird into it. We had a fairly large countertop toaster oven (holds a 9x13 pan) so we could bake side dishes and rolls, and at least the burners on the stove worked. It took a little longer to cook the turkey, but everything turned out tasty, and we went out on Black Friday to get a new oven element. To this day, I run the oven through the preheat cycles about a week out to make sure it’s still working (I use the countertop oven for everything but the Thanksgiving Turkey).

We also had the dishwasher quit on Thanksgiving a couple years later, right after we loaded it up with all the dirty dishes. That was a lot less fun . . . and required another lackluster Black Friday expedition.
