@Pea-n-Me - love the pictures of the dogs.
Thank you!
My daughter has a German Shepherd and he is a sweetheart. I know you have had shepherds before, were they prone to skin issues? Murph gets them to the point that he winds up on all kinds of meds.
I like his name!
Jacob's shepherd, G, has horrible skin issues. She's always at the vet getting medicine.
G is our 7th German Shepherd believe it or not. And no, none have really had skin issues. We have had trouble with colitis with a couple, and of course, two were on wheels due to spinal arthritis that stopped the nerves to their rear ends from working, and that was heartbreaking both times. (And why we went to just a smaller dog for a while.)
Otoh, Toto’s skin was great until a couple of years ago when he started having skin issues on his belly. (He’s 10.) I posted some of my frustrations about them here from time to time. They seemed to be related to kennel stays, or maybe food, or something out in the yard, but the vet was convinced it was allergies. Often, samples showed bacteria and yeast, so he wound up on an antibiotic multiple times. Meanwhile I was doing soaking baths on him with antibacterial and antifungal shampoos. It got to a point where the vet wanted to put him on heavy duty immunosuppressants and I said no.
Stepped up the medicated baths (got him his own little tub and purple bathrobe to make it a little easier, lol) really concentrating on the spots, and that finally took care of it. Thankfully he’s relatively small. If we had to do the frequent baths on the Shepherd, it would be much harder, due to his size and shedding and such. Toto’s are easy in comparison - he doesn’t shed and the ‘bathrobe’ stays on until he’s mostly dry.
This is the shampoo that the vet recommended, and the one I like too. I use both of these, at the same time.
