Quality of Fiestaware

Great to hear all the positive remarks on the fiestaware! I've been wanting to take the plunge for years but didn't dare with 3 boys and one husband in the house. I have corelle now and have the same set of dishes I received as a shower gift when I got married some 27 years ago. :) I've wanted new dishes for the last 5 years but could never find a new pattern to replace them with. I'm glad I didn't because maybe "now" I'll take the plunge and look at the fiestaware more closely!!!!! ;)

I dropped in a very nice Goodwill here a few weeks ago and happened to find 10 assorted color large plates for .99 ea. They had just put them out - I was so excited. I have 8 assorted place sets, plus extra colors bowls and dessert plates, but I love all the colors I had never seen before with these extra plates.I use them as extras and when we don't need complete place settings.

Oh gosh I bet you felt like you hit the jackpot!!

:thumbsup2 Yes, I did, and am still excited, because it was just perfect timing, plus the fact that the one doing the pricing didn't know what they were :lmao:They usually "up the price" on things that they think people want the most, or on name brand items

I have had mine for almost 20 years. My original set were from a discount barn type store south of Lexington, KY. I don't use those plates anymore as they were the larger 13" plates, a few years later we bought 12" plates. When I moved into this house I completed gutted the kitchen and of course my new cabinets HAD to have a plate rack! LOL I have mostly "old" colors, pink, light blue, light green, but have added a few new ones along the way. I love them just as much today as I did back in the early 90's :)

This is similar to me. DH and I got Corelle when we married 22 years ago. With time, 4 kids and tile floor, we had lost most of our pieces. In between we bought a set of walmart stone ware that didn't last.

Last year I decided that I would splurge for Fiestaware and we bought 7 place settings (6 of us and 1 extra set for a guest), but before I bought the Fiestaware, I found 2 sets of Corelle on sale at Walmart (the sets only had plates and bowls no mugs) for under $10 each set so we bought both--Fiestaware and Corelle in the same time frame.

We use the Corelle for warming foods in microwave, breakfast, lunch, snacks, etc. Can't beat it's durability, microwavability and that it's lightweight.

The kids love the Fiestaware (they each picked their own color) and want us to use it all of the time for family dinners, in fact the Fiestaware is what they reach for first. It has held up for us for the year just fine, no nicks, chips or scratches.

So in our house there is a place for Corelle and Fiestaware.

(My grandmother still has the 1970s original brown Corelle pattern.)

I live right by where they make it. They have seconds(with very minor flaws) so all of our are seconds. We actually use the small oval platter as our dinner plates. They have a tent sale twice a year where people from all over the USA come to. The second are 1/2 price thruout the year and then during those two weekends they are cut by another 1/2 off!!! My uncle is actually head of security!! Only color I noticed knife marks is the cobalt blue.

I was thinking this exact thing while reading this thread!!!! Seconds are awesome and SOOOO cheap!!! I make a trip only a few hours away every so often just to get more - if I did break one, it doesn't matter - but I never have! It's so great for every day use!!!! I buy firsts of more special items.

You can also order it from the factory - it used to be significantly cheaper than retail stores to order it by calling the factory direct, but I haven't done that in a long time so not sure if that's still the case or if they take orders by phone anymore.

I agree that darker colors show the knife marks - lighter does not. It's also American made - and from what I understand, the last of it's breed left in the USA!

I have 12 place settings that include dinner plates, bowls, dessert plates, and coffee mugs. I also have meat platters, gravy boats, butter dishes, and serving bowls. I have never broken anything (kncok on wood) and I love, love, love it. The only thing I wouldn't purchase is the matching flatware. I don't really like the quality of it.

We have had ours for about 6 years. We use them every day, lunch and dinner. I have a set of 10 dinner plates and 9 dessert plates (I dropped one dessert plate on the floor and have yet to replace it). I am always accidentally hitting these on my quartz counter when I unload the dishwasher. None of them have even a slight crack or chip. I have 10 different colors and I have friends who come over and will search for the color they want to eat on.

Fabulous quality and so fun!

I do not have the bowls, because I all ready had bowls with handles from anthropologie. I need to replace those soon, because they are all chipped at the top. Had them both the same amount of time. Just shows you the quality of the fiestaware.

DW and I love our Fiestaware. We have 10 or maybe 12 place settings, all in different colors. Plus tons of accessory pieces: gusto bowls, pasta bowls, large oval platters, large vegetable bowls, small dessert/ice cream bowls, S&P shakers, sugar and creamer set, flat sided pitcher, tea pot, oval casserole-type dishes, candle holders, canisters, large rectangular baking dish and probably more. We never did care for the water glasses or flatware though.

Yeah, the dark colors show some scratch marks but we really don't mind. I think maybe one piece broke in the 10+ years we've had them.

Two different shades of yellow plates that I refuse to eat from. Not a yellow fan. :snooty:

PP said they had a plate break in the microwave, can you not microwave these?

We've used our Fiestaware in the microwave pretty much on a daily basis for 14 years and have never had one break.

I've always heard that if there is a crack or chip on a dish (any brand), it should never go in the microwave because there is a chance it can shatter. Maybe that's what happened to the PP?

I have all of the above plus the matching flatware and a couple of sets of the serving spoons. I don't use the flatware often because I don't put them in the dishwasher - I have the older flatware, not the 'new' pattern. I like the older one but the new one doesn't appeal to me.

I also have a corelle set that I bought new of a discount table for $8. Those have seen lots of use! They take up such a small space.

On top of that I have a Disney set - Pooh!

And china .....way too many dishes!

Bottom line- quality product, durable, attractive colors, reasonably priced and best of all MADE IN THE USA.

Which bowls do you use for spaghetti?

We like the rimmed bowls for spaghetti and and gusto bowls for soup.

Where exactly in West Virginia is this? And when is the next sale? I'm in Richmond and would love a chance to hit that sale!

It's in Newell, WV (pretty much the very tip top of the state) and I've not seen the official dates for the next tent sale yet but it's usually around June.

We love ours! We've broken a couple of bowls, but both times it was kids dropping 'em on hard floors. They've withstood our chaotic house and small kids well. They also have a 5 year chip warranty!

We have a bright rainbow of colors, and it makes me so happy :). Fits well in the look of our house, built in the 40s.

I personally prefer to buy open stock, as I am not thrilled with all the pieces in the set. MIght be a little more, but then you aren't wasting money on pieces you won't use. We have dinner plates, 9" luncheon plates (probably what we use the most), gusto bowls (my husband's favorites-probably too big for the kids), and the 14 oz small bowls (best for the rest of us). The reviews on the mugs aren't great, which is one reason I have steered away from the sets.

PP here...I'm not sure how the crack happened, but all I know is that when I put the plate in the microwave, there wasn't a crack that I could see and there was a huge crack afterwards! Only microwaved about a minute or so.

It is very possible that the crack was there before I microwaved (that I couldn't see), so I am thankful the plate didn't shatter on me!

Thanks for this info! I'm outside of Richmond, but willing to drive for a fab deal!

I'm always looking to add colors. :)

It is an 8 hour drive for us and it's a total madhouse but it was so worth! We went in 2010 and I got so many pieces and they were so cheap. All were seconds but you can not tell at all.

I believe they are in June and October. Newell West Virginia is just about where Ohio, PA and West Virginia meet. It is right on the river. We drive to Va Beach every summer, so from Richmond I would say a 7 hour drive. they have people all over the country travel. There is usually a long line, but the people seem to have a ball. They all bring towels(to wipe off the dust to examine for flaws) and they only let so many people in at a time so it is fairly well organized. (guess I should say that since my uncle is head of security, lol). He was here tonight, I will check with him to see if the 2012 dates are set yet.
