Q's about renting/transfer that I didn't see A's to...

I have questions about the difference between renting and transferring.

If I rent,
does the member selling their points have to make all the reservations and I take my chances on the legitimacy of the transaction based on referrals, etc?

If I want a transfer,
then I am buying points from someone and they go directly into my points account?
Then I make my own reservations?

Would it be best to do the same research for both kinds of transactions?

Are there any points that can't be sold/transferred? (Holding/borrowed/developer)

I can't help with all of your questions, but I can give you this information...

Yes, if you rent then the member takes care of all reservations for you and you will need to trust him/her to do what he/she says they will do.

If you ask for a transfer you pay the member the agreed amount and then he/she transfers the points into your account. They retain their home-resort status and use year. They do not take on the home resort or use year status of your own points.

You are only allowed one transfer in or out of your account per year.

You cannot transfer banked points, but transferred points can be banked once transferred.

In addition to what Crafty Mouse has posted on transferred points -

~ points that have been borrowed from upcoming UY into the transferring member's current Use Year cannot be transferred.

~ Reservation Points cannot be transferred ( the points used to book
non-DVC resort reservation that has been subsequently cancelled ).

~ There is some question as to whether or not Holding Points can be transferred - it would seem they could be but those points would still likely retain all restrictions associated with using Holding Points ( ie the Holding Points if transferrable would carry over their restrictions to the member that would be receiving them.) Points become Holding Points when a member cancels a DVC resort reservation 30 days - 1 day before check-in date; then those points must be used by end of that current Use Year & reservations can only be made 60 days or less to check-in date wanted.

Sorry, regarding Developers Points I do not know if they can or cannot be transferred.

Just want to point out there are some threads here from past few days regarding a member who found themselves in a 'situation' concerning a transfer
http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1985544 and also on rental transactions. Trust your instincts even & be cautious even with points transfer; read the stickies on rent/trade board <ABSOLUTELY!!> and try to use paypal as an additional safeguard.
