So I have been investigating lounge access.

I can buy a 30 day American Airlines admirals club membership for $99, this should give my family access to the admirals club lounge at narita (remember we are going to Japan) .

I believe I can also access the Qantas lounge at sydney ( we are flying qantas)

Can anyone confirm this? If so, can anyone give a review of the qf lounge in Sydney, we don't have a long wait but it might be nice, DH is always up for a free beer, no matter what it costs! :rotfl: :crazy2:

I have been around and around in circles and cant find definite answer - I have sent an email to AA for confirmation.

But with 5 of us, a couple of soft drinks and some snacks will quickly pay for itself.

Qantas and AA do have reciprocal rights. I am a Qantas Club Member and always use the Admirals Lounges in the US.

My understanding is as long as you are flying Qantas or AA you can use the others lounge. I don't think you can fly Virgin and use the Qantas lounge.

It sounds to good to be true - I am looking for the hitch. !

I can get my whole family access to drinks and snacks - a family of five can easily spend $50 in an airport terminal.

I bet the true "business class" dont like it.

I think 80% of the true business class don't pay for their fares personally so I wouldn't be worrying about them too much!

Might pay to call qantas club that you intend visiting to check. The local numbers are often on the website for the qantas club locations.

Oh and it is a real bargain of you can access. Showers/wifi and feeding the kids is a great bonus and save money. We didn't have time when we connected from syd int to mel recently to go to virgin lounge thinking our plane was boarding . When we got to gate it was delayed 30m . Couldn't be bothered dragging everyone back to club so , you guessed it, spent $50 on 2 coffees, 2 toasties, 3 chic milks an a sausage roll. Rip off!

Just got back from a trip to disneyworld, brought the 30 day membership just before we left and got into the Sydney international qantas lounge and AA lounges in USA, showers were great after the 14 hr flight. You need to check in and get a buzzer for the showers. You get 2 free drinks in the AA lounges.

Thanks - that's what I want to hear, we're there any questions in Sydney because you didn't have a card, my DH would die of embarrassment if we were questioned.

I just showed them a photo of my AA card and a copy of the receipt I got from them when I purchased the 30 day membership. In America a just a photo of your receipt was enough. We missed out on using the qantas lounge at Lax because our plane sat on the Tarmac for a hour in Orlando before we took off.

Just had a reply from AA - they confirmed I can access the lounge at Sydney international as well as the Qantas or Admiral Club at Narita - provided we are flying Qantas :thumbsup2

So, I think this is a great deal for families we only have the two flights and no transits - but is still worthwhile for us, but if you had a couple of connections would be even better value.

Thanks for this thread, I have made the decision to join Delta Sky Club now for our trip. We have 8 flights in a month so I am thinking we will save just on food at $90 for the month for the 4 of us.

One thing I do wonder though, do they tend to have enough of a variety of foods and do they stock drinks for the kids or just a bar?

I have only been looking at the qantas lounges but surely they have drinks that are non alcoholic - adults like to keep it soft sometimes too. As far as food, I think it's a mixed bag at each lounge.

You will be well looked after in Sydney qantas club. Lots of snacks, juice, soft drinks and bubbles too. Some times hot food too depending on time of day.

I hate even asking this as I feel so miserly, but we will be leaving home about 5:00pm to arrive at the airport around six- do you think we could call it "dinner" or should we eat something more substantial before we leave home?
( I really don't want to be that family who turns up with their cheap membership and three teenagers and hits the buffet like its feeding time at the zoo!!)

Well - Battymum - it depends on what day you enter and which one.
my experience of Sydney Qantas Club from Friday 5pm onwards is feeding time at the Zoo - except you are fighting off the business suits! I stopped entering the lounge at that time cause there are no seats; "wholesome" young women pushing the alcoholic trend of the moment, very noisy and men clamouring for the snack bar!

it is mostly fried nibbly snacks, soup, cheese/bikkies, fruit, cake. if they queue politely, and the stack is reasonable no one will say anything.

A one of the suits....I couldn't agree more. But that is the q domestic lounges.

The q international lounges tend to be a lot more relaxed and inviting as there is never really a peak time as flights leave all day/ night. I have never experienced any mosh pit activity in melb or Sydney international lounges. However at foreign lounges that's another story!

I reckon with what's on offer at the lounge plus dinner on the plane you should be ok. They will usually have a hot meal like a curry/ pasta/soup etc plus build your own sandwiches .....if you do get into the first class lounge....well that's like a restaurant and I have had many happy meals there and no dinner on the plane required...

Ooooh the qantas first lounge in sydney is supposed to be very impressive- how can I scam entry into there, I am too old to be someone's escort! : (

We will see how it goes - we are not prisoners, can always leave and find maccas , but you know how us dis'ers like to be super organised about everything!

if you are asking about delta skyclub food...its mostly snack stuff, pretzils, chips etc and drinks (soft and hard).... we used our 30 day membership and was well worth the $$$ to have a quiet area with drinks and internet...just buy some food for the kids before you go in, just dont make it too obvious:thumbsup2

Thanks for the advice, not sure how quiet that area will be once my kids enter though :rotfl2: So definantly worth the bucks then? We have 8 flights in the 30 days duration so I am thinking that would be yes.
