Not sure where to post this but I've always got great suggestions from this board. After 3 years of begging I have bought DD(9) a yorkie puppy for Christmas. She will be beside herself with excitement because it's just one of those things that she thought would never happen. I pick up the puppy on Sat. around noon and my dad has offered to take care of it till Sunday a.m.. I'm just trying to figure out the best way to present it so I'm looking for ideas?

I'd fill her stocking with dog toys and treats, plus needs like collar and a leash, probably would need a sweater. As for the pup, let your dad open the door and have it run inside. Then let him take an extra moment just outside the door for the pup to get a head start into the house.

One of my most favorite Christmas mornings ever was waking up to puppy kisses from a sweet little Beagle pup named Betsy. My father snuck her into my room and onto my bed. I thought it was the cat at first, but there is no mistaking puppy breath! I was beyond thrilled.

I love Yorkies...my little Yorkie Peanut is a HUGE bright spot in my life. How about giving it to her like Lady and the Tramp. Find a wrapped box with a lid and some holes poked in it. Have Grandpa put her in it right before he brings it in. Then he can hand the box to you and you can give it to her to open immediately.

Let us know what you do and how it goes...pics are cool too!

Oh I would so let the puppy wake her up. How precious. I would love to see pictures of the puppy. I love puppies.

Big Red Bow around it's neck, and slip it into her room about 45 minutes before you expect her up. Then, go back to bed and pretend to be asleep. Wait for it... Wait for it....

I think that would be awesome!

Maybe 5 minutes but not 45! A new puppy could make a lot of little messes in 45 min ;)

I love the idea of letting puppy wake her up

Ahh, you've got a point there. Our floors are wood, so I don't think of those things very often. I was more worried the child would catch me dropping off the puppy.
Although I guess you could play it off with a "Look what I heard coming down the hall...." :rolleyes1

I was going to say don't put the puppy on the bed to wake her up, it might fall off and break something. Yorkies are so fragile but adorable when they're tiny like that :) Be prepared for some major messes. Ours has costed us well over triple what we originally paid for her just due to carpet replacement. Ugh! lol...

I love my yorkie, Winston. I wish I was getting a puppy surprise...

I picked up my puppy 2 weeks ago and would just like to mention that puppies chew everything This time of year we tend to have lots of wires, extension cords, decorations, toys etc laying around the house. Your not going to want to leave your puppy anywhere unsupervised. Not only because he isn't housebroken but if the pup eats something he shouldn't it could be a very expensive Christmas at the emergency vet!

Enjoy your new puppy, I am sure your DD will be thrilled and very surprised.

how exciting!

I would either have it waiting for her downstairs by the tree...or you can set it on the bed and wait for her response...you don't even have to leave...i would have video camera in hand though!!!!

I say put the puppy in a crate (this way it can't get out abnd chew wires and hurt itself) and put a box over the top of hte crate (cut out the back part so the dog can breathe!

My 14yo DS saw a premade puppy stocking at Walmart the other day and said "it would be really awesome if you were getting someone a puppy for Christmas and just filled their stocking with dog treats and stuff for it" so I'll go with that. We actually just got a puppy last week so no surprise here, but I'm glad because as closely as we have to watch her I wouldn't have wanted her in all of that chaos.

I am a Yorkie expert and would be glad to answer questions. I do have some questions about your puppy? How old will the puppy be when you pick it up? Also, what is the weight of the puppy? The reason I ask is because it makes a difference on how the puppy should be treated. Yorkie puppies can be very fragile.

I got my husband a Dalmation for Christmas one year. Snuck him in the house and had a huge box wrapped with no bottom. puppy was sleeping. sat the box on top then asked him to help me move the box. Just as he reached for it the box took off. It was priceless.

We have a yorkie-poo named Lilo. She has been the best dog ever:goodvibes We got her when she was just 8 weeks old and we had an easy time training her. We tied a couple of jingle bells together with ribbon and tapped a nail into the molding right by the front door. We hooked the bells onto the nail down low of course. We would take her out frequently and everytime we did we would ring the bell on our way out. After about a week we would tap the bell with her paw and then go out. It took her about a month, but then she would go tap the bell herself when she needed to go out. Only a few pee spots on the carpet during all our training:thumbsup2 She is now 2 and a great dog. So obedient and never barks. Our neice, on the other hand, has a yorkie that is beyond out of control and messes in their house all the time. Hopefully the OP's puppy will be a little darling:goodvibes
How exciting to be able to give your dd such a great surprise on Christmas morning. You have gotten lots of great ideas!
Here is a pic of my dd and our little Lilo

Great idea! I wouldn't leave a pup that size on the bed due to falls and it probably couldn't reach up and it could chew! They need to be supervised all the time. Maybe add a book on how to care for the pup as well.

I don't mean to be a kill-joy, but I just wanted to add my .02 that puppies should be seen as additions to the family and not as gifts. They need to be trained, cared for, and like a PP said, they chew EVERYTHING while those adult teeth come in (we're in the throes of it right now with our ~7 month old pup.)

Don't get me wrong, dogs are great members of the family and are great for sharing lots of love...just a big life-changing commitment that shouldn't be taken lightly. And yeah, I also agree that the post that mentioned 45 minutes is an eternity for a puppy to be alone on their own accord. I, too, had forgotten what puppy was like since our last dog was 14 when we said goodbye this past year, I'm guessing that poster has an adult dog and has forgotten what it is like to have that busy energy around the house.

How fun! I love the idea of filling her stocking with dog stuff and then having your dad let the puppy in and hang back for a little bit. So cute. We got our puppy last year and she has all her adult teeth in and still chewing!!!!! Fun, but a lot of work. How exciting. You have to report back what you did and how your DD reacted!
