Well, we sent my dear maltese Shasta to get fixed, she'll be home tomorrow, but I heard that there's a chance that a puppy could die when they get fixed!:scared1: Is this true? I love Shasta to death and I'd be just devastated if something were to happen to her!:sad1:

I supposed as with any surgery there is a risk of course, usually related to actually putting them to sleep for the surgery and obviously infection afterwards. But you have to tell yourself this is a VERY common surgery especially for dogs/cats and I'm sure your furbaby will come home just fine. Maybe a little moody for the first day or so, but after that wont take long to be back to normal.

Oh I'm sure your pup will be just fine! There is always a bit of a risk when uing general anesthesia but the procedure is quick and pretty safe. If it makes you feel better, my dog was spayed TWICE! We found her and then adopted her and took her to be spayed a few weeks later. Dr calls me right after the surgery to tell me that after they opened her up, they found she had already been spayed!

Hugs though. Be brave!

Thank you guys. I'll try to calm down a little. It's just that I tend to worry about almost everything these days.

If the vet's office isn't staffed 24/7, I'd pick her up tonight and take her home. As long as you have the ability to keep the pup quiet and confined, there's no reason to leave her overnight at an unattended vet. Assuming you have an emergency vet clinic available to you, that would enable you to get the pup to a vet in the middle of the night if necessary. If the staff goes home at 8 pm and comes in at 6 am... how is that better "care" than you could provide?

Generally speaking the pup is super groggy. She may refuse to lie down, which means that until she does, you have to sit beside her and be ready to catch her, because she will be falling asleep on her feet and swaying, but refusing to lie down. Eventually she will tilt and you catch her and ease her the rest of the way to the floor and let her rest until bed.

The vet will caution you against it, but that's a formality. Now if the place is fully staffed 24/7, you may feel more comfortable leaving the pup.

Yeah, we dropped the poor thing and now she's in two! The doctors are going to try to tape her back together- hope it works!:lmao:

Awww, I'm sure Shasta will be okay. Spaying/neutering is a VERY common procedure. It's normal for you to be concerned, though. After all, Shasta is family. You'd be worried if your baby sister had her tonsils removed even if you knew that the procedure is common and generally safe, wouldn't you? Shasta will come home a little sore, but she should be able to greet you with kisses and eat & drink well. She'll need some rest and don't let her go up and down the stairs much--that hurts a lot.

 Hugs to you. Sometimes I think these things are harder on us than on our pets.

Thanks you all for your concern.:grouphug: I'm a little more calm though, not totally calm, but more than I was before.

Whoever told you they could die when they're being fixed needs a slap upside the knoggin for telling you that. Chances are incrediably slim as this is a really routine procedure.

All four of my dogs, and the one deranged cat, came back the next day as if nothing happened to them. To be honest it's harder restrainng them, as the Vet suggests, since they seem to get AWNRIER!

She'll be fine. Consider the fact that darn never everyone gets their animals spayed/neutered ( at least let's hope so ) and how many people do you know that have said their pet died during that operation? It's a super common surgery, and I'm sure she'll be fine. What kind of dog is Shasta and how old is she?

She's a maltese and about 6-8 months old. (I lost track.):rolleyes1

oh yea, you did say that didnt you?! I'm sure she will be/is fine. Had the vet called today to give an update?

I know they like to wait till they are 6 months + so she fits perfectly. I have to make an appointment for my Newfie in a few months, and I know it'll be a breeze!

Hope you have had good news and your little dog is in recovery & doing fine.

The risk of surgery & anesthesia is very small compared to the risks of not spaying her. Unspayed females are prone to breast cancer, ovarian & uterine cancer and life-threatening uterine infections.

I agree with the other poster who says she should not be left in the hospital overnight if no one is with her. I would ask to bring her home tonight & then you can take her in for her post-op recheck tomorrow.

Any time a pet (or a human) goes under for surgery, there is a chance that complications will result in death.

But your puppy will be fine!!

My 11 year old cat just went under twice this summer for dental surgery and she came out beautifully.

It is more harmful to your pet to not have her fixed. You are being a good pet mommy!

We just had our 5 mos old mini dachshund spayed on Tues. She's fine. The worst part is trying to keep her calm, she really wants to run and play. The vet asked us to "keep her quiet" for 3 days, so her stitches wouldn't stretch. Good luck with your puppy!

When did you drop her off and when are they doing the surgery? Can you call and check on her?

We had one of our dogs neutered when we went to WDW. Figured the vet could keep him confined and quiet and we wouldn have had to board him anyway. I can remember calling the vet from a pay phone (this was before everyone had cell phones) between Adventureland and Frontierland, to check on the dog after surgery.

I am sure she will be fine.

Awww she'll be fine. Any word yet? I totally agree as well with bringing her home overnite..she can sleep beside you and you can see 1st hand how she is doing in the nite.;)

She's back at home safe and sound now. She's very sore, though. She can't eat really big and hard food. (Forgot to mention she had to get about 4 of her teeth pulled out for some reason.) She should be back to her old hyper self in a few days. Thank you all for caring about her so much.:grouphug:
