Puns, a Fun Run and 1901 - Our first trip to Disneyland! Updated 8.29.2014x2!

Thanks! To this day I feel so lucky for being able to visit so much! There are so many awesome "retired" attractions! I loved the Gummi Bear themed motor boats that used to be near IASW- I think the old loading dock for the attraction is now a smoking area? :confused3 The Rocket Rods in Tomorrowland were also insanely cool- but it was so rare that they ever worked. You could wait in line forever and just listen to them stop over and over again. I know Disney has to evolve as time does, but you never could beat when Tarzan's Tree House was Swiss Family themed, either. :)

I don't think I ever heard about the Gummi Bear boats! I'll have to look that up, haha. Aaaand now their theme song is stuck in my head.

I love that the Swiss Family Treehouse at WDW is still pretty close to the original. I don't get into it frequently, since Scott has bad knees and I don't want to make him wait for him, but I may have to do it again on our next trip.

Looking forward to hearing more about your trip!

Thank you! More posts coming soon!

Just showed your trip photos to my DD and she started screeching with excitement over our upcoming trip! Thanks for helping us build the anticipation!

:thumbsup2 Wooo!! You're welcome! So glad I could help enhance your excitement levels for your trip! When will you be there? First visit?

Chapter 4:

After Pirates, we decided to keep walking around Disneyland and see where we wound up. Turns out we went in the direction of Critter Country – another new land! We came up to the Winnie the Pooh attraction, which I knew had taken the place of Country Bear Jamboree. I’d heard there was a semi-hidden reference to CBJ during the ride, so I wanted to check it out for myself.

I DID get to see the Country Bear Jamboree reference (leave me a comment or send me a message if you want me to tell you where it is - I know some people like finding these things on their own!), but I wasn’t seating in a spot where I could get a picture. I always love how even when Imagineers change attractions or full areas of a park, they always make sure to leave a nod to what was there previously.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, there is also NO DANCING in Disneyland.

P8060319_zps8dfe4907.jpg

There wasn’t too much that we wanted to see/do in Critter Country at the moment, so we went back towards the hub and cut across to Tomorrowland.

P8060321_zpsff0f65a2.jpg

We saw that Buzz Lightyear had a short wait and hopped right on.

As usual, Scott won (although this score was marginally better than what I had gotten the last time I rode in Orlando)!

IMG_1623_zpsd893cc19.jpg

It was getting close to be time for us to check into our dinner reservation for
Blue Bayou, so we started to head back over to New Orleans Square when, once again, we found ourselves in a complete mob of people. I was really crossing my fingers that it wasn’t going to be this crazy all week, because I wasn’t sure we’d be able to handle it.

P8060326_zpseea47e6d.jpg

P8060327_zpsdd184fd2.jpg

After we checked in for Blue Bayou, they gave us a pager while we waited for a table. I took the time to really look around New Orleans Square, and visit one of the more beloved areas, the Court of Angels.

Now that it is being changed into the waiting entryway for Club 33, I’m EXTREMELY happy I was able to spend some time in there on this trip (although if I had known it would be going away, I definitely would have looked at the details a little more).

The infamous Club 33!

Chapter 5: Dinner on the Bayou and wait - I don't know what you look like!

Our buzzer went off, and we were taken inside Blue Bayou and seated at our table. I absolutely LOOOVED the theming once we were inside. I know I had gotten a chance to get a quick peek at it during our ride on Pirates, but it was even better up close.

P8060332_zpsae96eeb7.jpg

I was excited to order one of the classic Disneyland beverages I’d heard so much about, the Mint Julep. It was just as delicious as described!

P8060333_zpsd04365f7.jpg

P8060341_zps2c1ebe81.jpg

We were given bread when were first seated. I don’t remember it being anything special, but due to our travel time, we hadn’t really eaten much today, so I was excited to have SOME kind of food. Each entrée at Blue Bayou comes with the Blue Bayou House Salad (or a cup of gumbo).

P8060337_zps8e0de43c.jpg

P8060339_zpsc31d33e7.jpg

It was a decent salad (I loved the walnuts), but I wished I would have asked for it without the cheese. Scott and I are unique, and neither of us really cares for cheese, so I had to pick most of it out of the salad.

P8060343_zps5e87ee5d.jpg

My entrée however, was FANTASTIC. I had the pan-seared salmon with sweet corn risotto and I couldn’t stop eating it.

P8060344_zpse631e568.jpg

Scott ordered the beef strip loan, and subbed in fingerling potatoes instead of the au gratin potatoes. Scott had a little bit of a difficult experience during this meal. When we were seated, he had asked for a soda, and we had to remind our server twice to bring it. Then when ordering his entrée, he’d asked for the sauce on the side, and when his food came out, it was on the steak. Finally they got his order correct, but because of the rocky start, I don’t think he enjoyed his meal as much as he would have if things had come out quickly and correctly.

P8060345_zps9380e6cc.jpg

Even with the bumps in the road, we still decided to order a dessert, and got the chocolate cake. It was delicious, and a good way to finish off our meal!
While we were eating, some of my friends that I’d met through Twitter had arrived in the park and were finding a spot to watch Fantasmic. I was excited to join them and meet for the first time, although this did pose a bit of a problem – how do you find people you’re looking for in a big crowd, when it’s dark, and you don’t really know what they look like?

Through a lot of texting and phone waving, we finally saw each other! Two of the people we were meeting up with, and the third was someone who was also visiting Disneyland for the first time! He and I had been excitedly chatting about this trip for months leading up to it. He had already been at Disneyland for a few days, so while we waited for Fantasmic to start, I kept asking him a million questions about everything he’d seen so far and hearing his thoughts on all of it. It was raising my excitement levels again! After dealing with the crazy crowds and just feeling “off” by not knowing where anything was or how to get anywhere, I really think I needed that conversation. So EE, if you’re reading this, thanks!

P8070350_zpse41b8194.jpg

As soon as Fantasmic started, I could tell we were going to have excellent seats! I wasn’t really sure how it would work, being located at the Rivers of America rather than a separate location like at DHS, but I really loved watching this show in the middle of Disneyland.

P8070352_zps708c09e2.jpg

I was completely blown away by the dragon, as well as the Peter Pan scenes!

P8070358-2_zps087216fd.jpg

Also by watching my friend Matt’s expression in reaction to everything that was happening, haha. He’s one of the Disneyland locals that we were meeting up with, but everything that happened in Fantasmic made him so visibly excited, as though he was watching it for the first time. It’s the little things that let you know you were instantly meant to be friends with a person.

P8070361_zps02e5eaac.jpg

P8070362_zps7c511a37.jpg

After Fantasmic, we chatted for a few minutes trying to decide where to go next. I was up for just about anything, since there was still so much we hadn’t seen yet. We decided to go to Fantasyland for a ride on Casey, Jr!

P8070371_zps0763ac17.jpg

P8070372_zps2dc2e2db.jpg

Our friends told us that we HAD to ride in the caboose, as they consider it the best seat on the train. I could see why they would say that, since you get such an awesome view of the rest of Fantasyland throughout the ride. Looking back, I’m a little sad that we didn’t get a chance to ride this again during out trip, since I would have loved to see everything from that angle during the day too!

P8070373_zpsd5e1980b.jpg

After Casey Jr., we remained In Fantasyland and went to ride it’s a small world!! I had been looking forward to this SO much!

P8070374_zps35319bdd.jpg

Oh hai.

P8070375_zps29d3a00b.jpg

I know that there is some division among Disney fans about whether or not they like the addition of Disney characters onto it’s a small world. I can see both sides. I think there were some characters who were designed EXTREMELY well and really fit in seamlessly onto the attraction.

P8070376_zpsafe9837f.jpg

P8070377_zpsd38384c1.jpg

P8070379_zpsde10f13f.jpg

However, there are others (I’m looking at you Nemo and Dory), who are just thrown in there with absolutely no connection to the original ride. And some of the proportions seem to be off as well – the Jessie and Woody characters seemed a lot larger than the rest of the figures throughout the attraction. (Sorry for lack of pictures of these – I didn’t take too many on this ride through because I wanted to really observe and enjoy it outside of my camera lens).

IMG_1629_zpsd3cbafbc.jpg

After we exited it’s a small world, it was just about closing time for Disneyland. Typically when we visit the Parks, we love hanging out a little bit past closing to take in the environment and see it without other people around, but we were so exhausted, physically, mentally and emotionally.

IMG_1631-2_zps910c1978.jpg

We made the very short walk back back to our hotel – here’s the view of it while waiting at the crosswalk in front of the Disneyland entrance.

P8070381_zps43e935a9.jpg

Once we arrived, we almost immediately got into bed. Tomorrow was going to be a big one – our first FULL DAY at Disneyland!!

I AM HERE! I have really been looking forward to this TR since it's always fun seeing another WDW vet venture out to Disneyland. And it's also so funny how we both had similar reactions to Disneyland... It really does feel like Bizzaroland, right?! Everything just seems slightly... off. The nice part is... when you go back a second time, it feels way more like "Oh, I really missed this!" and you have everything figured out.

Those crowds are CRAZY! I can't believe how busy it was when you got there! We saw some kind of crazy crowds a couple times, but I think that's worse than what we saw. The biggest issue Disneyland has is space... and it's hard to sometimes fit all of the people into one space. We ran into insanity during the Christmas Fantasy parade over near IASW. We could barely move because so much was roped off, blah. I hope crowds tamed down for you though... we're going in April, and I'm hoping since we'll miss Grad Nights, that we'll experience a pretty quiet week.

I can't WAIT to go on the Haunted Mansion in April. We've never been on the normal version in Disneyland, so we're looking forward to it. I think we'll end up preferring WDW's version though, since DLR's doesn't have the staircase room and the creepy eyes that stare at you. But Matt will be happy on his beloved HM, regardless of what park we're at.

I AGREE ON PIRATES! Well, I prefer the cue (and smell) of WDW's, but the overall ride is UNREAL in Disneyland. So much longer and has some fantastic scenes!

I'm excited to read more... and reading this just made me realize I DEFINITELY need to write a TR about our Disneyland trip from November. I've been on the fence about it, but I just feel like I have to. Now, to try and get my WDW one done.. OY VEY..

Anyway, glad you are writing this TR and that I'm here. It's so much fun reading about your experience for the first time!

Joining in. I'm going to Disneyland for the first time this year and want to learn all I can about it before I go.. Luvin all your pics

:thumbsup2 Wooo!! You're welcome! So glad I could help enhance your excitement levels for your trip! When will you be there? First visit?

We go next month. First trip for the kids (both to DLR and out West). I went for one day last fall while in LA for a business trip. But between crowds and jetlag, got to see just enough to know I haven't seen anything.

Your photos and TR are great! Thanks for taking the time to post.

YAYYY DANI'S HERE!!!!

I can't wait until we're able to go back to Disneyland again and not feel quite so thrown off by everything. Almost as interesting is going to be what it's like in May when we're back at WDW for the first time since going to Disneyland!

I know what you mean about space. I think part of what drove the crowds up was the sheer number of additional people who were in town for D23 Expo (not to mention we were also there in August, which is just a peak vacation time anyway). Fortunately, the crowds we encountered that first afternoon were the worst of the entire trip.

Those are the main reasons we preferred WDW's Haunted Mansion also, but I do give Disneyland the edge on the stretching room and entry way. I really hope our next trip is during the holidays so we can see the Haunted Mansion Holiday for ourselves!

Also - WOOOOOOOOOOOOO more Dani trip reports!!!

Welcome and thank you! Feel free to ask me any questions you have about being a first time at Disneyland - obviously I won't know as much as the long-time visitors, but we did learn a lot on our trip and I'm happy to help in any way I can. :thumbsup2

Thank you! I'm glad I have readers with whom we can share our trip! :goodvibes

That's so exciting that it's the first trip for your kids, and essentially for you too - you're right, there's so much to see and do, one day is not nearly enough time to really experience and appreciate it. Hopefully I'll get a few more good updates in before your trip!

Thanks I'm sure I'll come up with many questions. Lol. Can't stop looking up stuff about the area :rotfl2:

Loving your report! Always fun to read a trip report written by someone who loves Disney as much as I do! Great pix! Thank you for taking the time to post it.

Great update! I love the Fantasmic photos, especially the one with the Mickey Ears!

Adventureland and that bridge area that goes over POC is always like the crush of death! Too many people for such a small walkway!

Can't wait to keep reading!

I was the same way - I didn't want to know EVERYTHING, since I wanted there to be a few surprises along the way, but I wanted to at least know enough the Parks so that I didn't have to spend my entire trip looking down at the park maps.

Thank you! I think that's the best thing about the DisBoards - people wouldn't be here if we all didn't love the Disney company and parks so much! Keep an eye out for another post tonight or tomorrow!

Thank you! That picture was actually a happy accident - it wasn't what I intended when I took the picture, but I loved the outcome when I saw it on my computer later!

You're right, that area of Adventureland was definitely where we seemed to encounter the crowd buildup most frequently. But that's bound to happen when it's a small walkway, like you said, and when you have so many great attractions so close to each other!

Chapter 6: Welcome to Radiator Springs!

P8070001_zps7ff966f6.jpg

Since we had spent a few hours in Disneyland yesterday, we decided to start off our first full day by checking out Disney’s California Adventure! Since yesterday we felt like we were in a bizarro-Magic Kingdom, I’m sure you can guess why we thought today would be a bizarro-Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

P8070002_zpsb8684f93.jpg

As you can see it was pretty overcast when we arrived – I was glad I’d worn my hoodie that morning!

P8070005_zpsf0d4ea53.jpg

We knew that the first thing to do once we arrived at the park would be to get in line for Radiator Springs fast passes, but on our way we stopped briefly to start getting some use our of our Photopass+ card!

50043490001_zps69144dc1.jpg

It wasn’t too difficult to find our way to the RSR Fastpass line – it extended out to the Carthay Circle theatre by the time we got there.

P8070006_zps86202277.jpg

Oh, and in case you’re not aware, I really love taking pictures of light fixtures around the parks. One of the little details that show up in every aspect of the parks and are always different depending on the land/attraction!

Getting closer…

P8070008_zps810d9f67.jpg

Made it!

P8070012_zpsfde2cb0a.jpg

It took about 20 minutes in line to get our Fastpass ticket, and our return time was for 2:30PM.

Since it was so close and we’d heard so much about it recently, we were really excited to check out Carsland!

50043490002_zps8072036f.jpg

50043490003_zps3dd0cd12.jpg

I wrote in my trip report journal “Carsland – SO COOL!” haha. I feel like that really does sum it up!

P8070014_zps951a5ac6.jpg

P8070015_zpsb14a280e.jpg

Having just spent the previous week on Route 66 and in Sedona, it was awesome to see the influences each of those areas had on Radiator Springs and the Carsland environment!

50043490015_zps3cc6a8f0.jpg

P8070016_zpsd601f101.jpg

Not to mention bringing the world of Cars to life as well – even if you’re not a fan of the movies or franchise, it would be difficult to argue that this isn’t an immersive experience that brings to life something from the screen.

P8070017_zps06ce35a8.jpg

P8070022_zpsafaf38e4.jpg

P8070024_zps1cb49817.jpg

P8070025_zpsfe07cf61.jpg

One of the big highlights was also the fact that at almost any time of day, you could see at least one of the mobile characters from Cars out and about for meet and greets or pictures. I really can’t wait for a chance to bring my nephews here!

P8070027_zpsf4de0b87.jpg

P8070028_zps15b343dc.jpg

Chapter 7: One Picture, Four Mountains!

Since we were in Carsland, we decided that even though we had a Fastpass for later, we should try to hit the main attraction!

P8070032_zps4a63e75f.jpg

The single rider lane for RSR was pretty short, so we decided to take our chances over there – since we had the Fastpass, we knew we’d get a chance to ride together later!

P8070034_zpsae48b1d8.jpg

P8070035_zps76279831.jpg

Even though we were in the single rider line, we lucked out and were placed in the same car!

P8070039_zpsed316af7.jpg

All I have to say about this ride is WOAH. I was so impressed with the animatronics, and the ride was genuinely fun. I don’t understand the people who try to compare it to Test Track – just because each one has a car as a ride vehicle and a portion of the ride that goes quickly, that’s about the extent of their similarities in my opinion.

P8070041_zps07dd8cdb.jpg

P8070043_zps5df2c325.jpg

P8070046_zps0b5f021c.jpg

P8070047_zps96bfcb1c.jpg

Unfortunately our car didn’t win the race, but we did get a fun ride photo out of it!

50042740000_zps3b1e18e7.jpg

There are even nice touches as you’re exiting the ride – I had to get a picture of this one, since the stegosaurus became my second-favorite dinosaur, thanks to a project I did on them in the second grade. Don’t forget, Gertie will always be number one!

P8070050_zps682e47e4.jpg

P8070051_zps2d64e229.jpg

Seriously, just look at this place.

P8070052_zpsd2519f28.jpg

P8070053_zps312b6d9a.jpg

P8070056_zps99376fbe.jpg

As with our first few hours in Disneyland, we weren’t feeling overly eager to start lining up for rides just yet. We were more interested in taking our time and just enjoying the environment.

P8070057_zps5aa1e7ac.jpg

P8070058_zps310b2be7.jpg

P8070059_zps86ba2265.jpg

I loved the feel of Paradise Pier – it really did have the essence of the seaside boardwalks that I went to growing up when my parents would take us to the beach, especially Ocean City, MD and Rehoboth, DE.

P8070060_zps824322b5.jpg

Mickey’s Fun Wheel only had a 10 minute wait – for the non-swinging cars, that is. There’s no way no how you’d be getting me on the Mickey’s Death Wheel Swinging Cars. NOPE, NOT HAPPENING.

P8070061_zps115c372f.jpg

IMG_1637-2_zps7887089d.jpg

I was really excited for the view that we’d have from the top of the ferris wheel!

P8070064_zps0559d125.jpg

One picture, all four mountains!

P8070065_zps5e29f96c.jpg

Granted, Big Thunder Mountain is somewhat obstructed by the wiring on the cage, but that seems fitting considering it was still down for refurbishment while we were there.

P8070066_zps9c5bc1a8.jpg

BRFKnmFCMAAxFHfjpglarge_zps0805692d.jpg

Catching a glimpse of Disneyland got us talking, and we decided that we
wanted to head back over there and see if the park felt more manageable to us without the massive crowds we’d encountered the day before.

We have been to DLR before, but that was before Carsland! We are heading back there at the the end of May. Getting excited!

So what time did you arrive at CA? I've read that it maybe better to wait an hour after opening to get your FP. I'm just wondering since your return time was 2:30pm.

Thx! Really enjoying your TR!

Subscribing! I am heading to DL for my first time in 11 days and I think this trip report is the perfect way to countdown to my trip. I have been to WDW 5 times in the past three years and am excited to see/feel the differences. Thanks for writing this wonderful report!

My next trip to WDW is at the beginning of May, so hopefully I'll have this TR finished before you return to DL! I've heard from so many people who have gone before and after CarsLand that it makes such a huge difference to DCA. You're going to love it!

Checking the timestamp on my camera, we arrived in DCA at 8:20, and I was in line by 8:25 AM (the park had an 8 AM opening that day), and we got our Fast Passes at 8:45. Fast Passes can run out pretty quickly some days, but later in the trip we'd walked by around 9-something, and there was NO line and FPs were still only out until 2:30, so I guess it just depends on the day. I'd suggest trying to get as early a time as you can, that way in case the ride does break down during your FP time, you'll have more time to use them later if it comes back up. We also used the Single Rider line a lot, usually with only a 10-15 minute wait. Hope that helps!

Yay! A new TR! Totally following along :goodvibes
