Psat/Sat questions

What is an average total psat score. My ds took the test and he just got it back from the guidance counselor. I really dont know how to read this or understand it. His total score was 130 I think. He does not do well with english/writing/comprehension etc. His friends mom told me, oh amanda did terrible. Her score was only 10 points higher than my ds and she is a brain, straight A, honor roll etc. So also is the psat any indication of how well they will do on the sat. We have all pretty much basically signed up our kids for the sat prep course that is being offered at the school.

I can't remember how scoring is done for the PSAT to be honest. I do remember that they said that most student's SAT scores are about 100-200 points higher on the SAT than the PSAT (that wasn't the case with me though--mine went down a tiny bit).

The maximum score is a 240. There are three parts now just like the new SAT: Writing, Language and Math. Each part, you can earn a maximum of 80 points. The new three part SAT will be used for the first time this spring and so it is difficult to predict how close the scores on the new SAT will track the PSAT scores.

# Your Scores
PSAT/NMSQT scores are reported on a scale from 20 to 80. Average scores are near the midpoint (50) of the scale. For the 2000 PSAT/NMSQT test:

* The average scores for juniors was about a 48 in verbal (now the critical reading section), 49 in math, and 49 in writing skills.
* The average score for sophomores was about 45 in verbal (now the critical reading section), 46 in math and 46 in writing skills.

max is 240...averages usually run about 40 to 50 for each section, depending on age.

Hey, the score report (green and white or blue and white report, usually four-paneled?) has a breakdown of the score. It should be three numbers that total to around 130, is that right? Something like 40, 40, 50?
