Just a warning. We bought a casio exillium camera which quit focusing 28 days after we purchased the camera. we were on vacation, and could not return the camera to the store where we purchased it within the 30 days allowed for returns. I paid to ship it to NJ for repairs. Today I received a bill for $139. According to Casio, the camera was damaged and those the warranty voided. Clearly, I will not pay $139 for repairs when I can purchase a new one for $150. You can bet however, it will NOT be a Casio product.

The camera was not damaged when I shipped it--I should have taken a picture of the camera as proof, but I trusted the company to do the right thing. I won't make that mistake with this company again.

Personally, I prefer Sony products, but... it helps to try to see things from the other side, in such cases. What evidence does Casio have that the camera was not damaged prior to shipment? There are a whole host of schemers and exploiters out there... just surf around online and you can find myriad discussions about how people seek to take advantage of whatever weaknesses they perceive might exist in a company's customer service system. And few, if any customers, are honestly willing to pay X% more to cover the costs of providing the customer service you were expecting to receive, in light of the X% of such claims which are fraudulent. Honest people surely don't want to pay more just because there are so many dishonest people out there. We'd rather just pay less, and take some of the risk of loss onto ourselves.

Another point: If you chose to ship the camera for warranty service, the vast majority of warranties specify your obligation to insure it against damage en route. If you chose to save money and not engage private insurance, then you effectively self-insured, i.e., decided to have any loss covered out of your own resources, rather than someone else's.

Good luck with your new camera, but just a word of caution: Don't expect any competitor to Casio to operate any differently.

did you happen to buy the camera with a credit card?

Recently, we had bought a portable DVD player that stopped working at 6 months old. The store warranty was only 90 days, but the credit card we bought it with (Amex) doubled the warranty. We were grumbling because we hadn't used it in a couple of weeks when we realized it wasn't working anymore and by then it was 182 days so we considered it a loss. But we called anyway and a few days later a credit magically appeared on our statement.

Might be worth it to check into...
