Can anyone tell me if the PS3 and Nintendo wii games are compatable with our consoles. My son is hoping to take advantage of the cheaper prices over in the US.

i'm not a 100% sure - but i wouldn take the chance. british consoles and TV sets and video are in a different format and frequency to American TVs and stuff.

In britain we have the "PAL" system (it says this on the boxes for the wii games") but in america they have "NTSC" - 2 different formats :worried:

therefore, i dont think NTSC games (bought in AMerica) will work on PAL consoles (I presume you have a british console). however it may be different with a PSP (playstation portable) - i think the games for this console are region free.

however, there may be a solution even if not technically legal. i know you can have your gaming consoles "chipped". this allows you to play pirate / copied games - which people sell soooo cheaply. we had our PS1 (i know - very old - this was like 9 yrs ago) chipped and i remember being able to play a NTSC game on it.. (dont know why i remembered that - i might just be weird) :lmao: therefore, u may be able to have your console modified to allow to play games from other regions but i expect there is no guarantee that this wont damage your console.

so...i know i've left a huge message, and it's not a 100 % certain - sorry about that! but i hope it helps a little. maybe it's not worth risking. check out eBay for great deals on games! they're always in good condition and at least £10 cheaper or more!!!

you could cheque out these:

hope someone can help you more,

US ps3 & psp games are ok for UK consoles and some Blu Ray films are region free so you could pick up a bargain, Wii games however are a different format & cannot be played on UK spec consoles.

I would have always thought that the games would not be region free but after searching google fiona is right all PS3 games are region free which is quite handy to know now as I can have a look when I'm over there.

does this mean that i could purchase a ps3 in america with games and bring them back to play!? altho there is the ntsc thingy and the voltage change.

I have heard frm my PS3 forum, that although the games are region free, some people do experience problems because of the regional content.

I am pretty sure that PSP games are not compatible with the UK PSP too, but I may be wrong but I would not risk it.

i bought a game from ebay in the US, and it works fine on my british PSP

and for the PS3: perhaps its safer to get the console here in the UK, and then just pick up some games for it in america.

us psp games ok ,psp films region coded

The American PS3 runs on a different voltage (we run at 240V the US at 110V). This would mean you would have to buy a step down transformer. Any problems with the console would not necessarily be covered by warranty.

PSP games are not region encoded. I bought some in the US last year and they work fine.

I believe the same is true for PS3 games (but not Xbox 360 titles).

Computer Geek here so I can give you a pretty firm answer

PS3 is pretty much region free HOWEVER I believe online content can be an issue. 360 is region free unless the game is coded to lock out in another region by the developers

Wii ISNT region free but can be with Freeloader. Which is a disc that tricks your wii into being Multiregion. I brought one along with Smash Bros Brawl and it works a charm with that. Though the only issue with that is that because its not a product that Nintendo approves of, a future wii system update could stop the disc working.

A friend of mine has a US PS3 and hasn't had any problems with it, I'm pretty sure he just bought a UK power lead for it and it works fine.

How about PS2's - does anyone know if US discs work over here?

Alas there isnt an easy way to do this, nobodys found in exploit in the PS2 to make a boot disc that will allow you to trick it. You can get your PS2 chipped but this require you eather going to an indie game store to get the job done or soldering the chip in yourself. Bearing in mind this invalidates your warranty

Thanks for that info, it's really useful! How long is the warranty valid for anyway?

US PSP games work. My son bought several whilst we were over in Sept. They are usually the same price in $ as they are in £, so they are about half price. Nintendo DS games the same too. My younger son bought both Pokemon Diamond and Pearl for the same price he would pay for one in the UK. There are lots of games for both of these consoles that havent been released here too. We bought a Ninendogs Special Editition game that had all the dogs on (usually they have three or four on each game).

It is the rule of thumb that handheld consoles games are region free, but things like the PS3, XBOX369 etc arent.

The 360 is NOT region free, ours is PAL and in the US it's NTSC

We have a 'swap magic' disc, it comes with a couple of bits of plastic that fit inside the disc reading part of the PS2 which allows the lid to be opened and 'tricks' the PS2 into thinking it hasn't been opened. So you can then put in any sort of disc that it normally wouldn't read shut the lid and boot it up. The disc you put in lets you choose PAL or NTSC although we haven't tried it on any US games.

We got it a while back so would google it to see if it's still available. It's a little tricky to get the plastic bits in but once they're there it's great :thumbsup2
