I got my kids one last Christmas and I love it! They were 7 & 8. They run around the neighborhood with their friends and play a lot and it is so much more convenient for me to call them for dinner than to have to look all over the place for them 
I got a cheap trac phone. I pay 20.00 every 3 months, so about 6.75 per month. That gives them 120 minutes for 3 months. That is plenty since all it is used for is for me to keep in touch with them when we are not together. Neither of them is interested in texting or even talking with friends yet. Most of the kids in our neighborhood have one, it just makes it easier to keep in touch. Just a few minutes ago I noticed that I hadn't seen my DS and his friend in awhile. They had been out playing nerf guns. I gave him and quick call and found out that they are now at another friends house on the next street. It saves me a lot of running around hollering my kids names
