Prom garter ceremony

High School kids!?! Never heard of it and frankly it sounds creepy, disgusting, and very low class.

From a simple google search- "When the garter was removed, it was a symbol of the bride losing her virginity." Why in the world would you do this?!?

OMG-You Guys! It's not "Gross" or "Inappropiate" Relax you people and try to unpucker your lips! Jeez!!

It's just a fun, cute high school ritual that has been around for a LONG time. They buy a garter in matching colors...sometimes the guys wear it around their tricep/pec area of his arm for the pictures and then hangs it from his mirrror.

If you think this leads to them being immoral young adults on the road to dropping out, and being drunk degenerates, pregnant at 17, then you're wrong.

It's just a little fun, a ceremony that really doesn't matter that much and most won't remember.

However, in TX for Homecoming, the boys wear garters on their arms that can get as big and gaudy as the girl's mums My senior year my BFF and I decided to be different and made ourselves garters instead of mums. We were rebels like that!

I'm not naive enough to think it has anything to do with whether they are having sex or not or that boys don't see more than that of a girls leg in swimming class for heavens sake, I just never heard of it for a prom . I have never heard of it in several states that I have lived in and over many, to many decades of prom. I also am having trouble imagining them getting a crowd of 800-100 kids stopping and paying attention to do that plus having enough room. they are usually packed in like sardines. Plus going in groups is very big anymore, or friend dates not date date.

Huh? No. I was sharing what wearing the garter symbolized at another school.

Kids will do whatever they want. The school doesn't have to participate or condone.

Girls wore garters at my high school, but there was no garter ceremony. The tradition was so popular, prom stores sold personalized garters - One side of the ribbon had the couple's names, the other side the school and the year was a center charm.

The tradition for us was less about taking it off (no ceremony) and more about giving the guy a memento since most girls kept and dried their corsages as mementos. The guys usually put them on their rear view mirrors.

Some girls didn't even wear them, but put them in their clutch to give to the guys for pics later.

On the subject of prom dresses... they run the gamut here.
From Long, sleek and backless to short and full of bling, and everything in between.

I'm glad there isn't a set length or style. Different builds look better in different lengths and styles.

I can pretty much guarantee my daughter will be wearing short and form fitting for her prom. We've gone dress shopping with her older cousins (where she tried on dresses just for fun) and she looks terrible in floor length. She's a solid-built 5'1" (think gymnast build, not dancer build). Floor length makes her look heavy and frumpy. lol. And short dresses do not look 'as short' on her since she doesn't have those long, super thin legs of other teen girls.

This is what we did back in the day! Shopping for your garter was just as big a deal as shopping for your prom dress, shoes, jewelry and getting your hair done!

This is the way I feel. Garters used to hold up your stockings ie- part of your "underwear." To me, the implication is that your underwear is coming off. I didn't want this tradition at my wedding, much less high school prom!

Of course it's a sexual innuendo but at least "traditionally" it's in a more appropriate context at a wedding. At prom? Over my dead body. Regardless of ones views on premarital sex, we believe strongly and have taught that sexual intimacy between a couple is PRIVATE...I would be ashamed of my son if he even considered objectifying a young woman as a "notch on his belt" in such a public way. And for the Dads on this thread - how would you really feel about seeing your daughter's garter dangling off some guy's rearview??

No difference in the dress...there is typically no such thing as "prom" in Canada. Graduation (grad) is when the big banquet and dance takes place and the gowns, tuxes, limos etc., get rolled out. FWIW, I've never heard of this garter thing before (thankfully).

Great post I completley agree I see not one thing wrong with this at all. I think it sounds pretty fun to be honest.

I wore a garter to prom - in 1986 - everyone did! Typically it matched your dress.

No ceremony removing it - I think that is icky - but we all had one.

I hate the garter removing at some wedding receptions - tacky!
