Prom garter ceremony

Never heard of it and what do the gay couples do? Can't see a male couple with one wearing a garter? :confused3

I not only never heard of it, but never heard of anyone wearing a garter under a prom dress? That's a tradition that should be left for weddings IMO

Same!

and my first thought was ewww, really?

Are you kidding me? I'm in rural Arkansas. They'd shut down the whole prom before they let a gay couple come together. And no, I'm not at all exaggerating at all. These aren't my feelings, btw.

Even though the girls' dresses sometimes are shorter than the garter, I don't think that's even the point. The point is, as someone mentioned, that it's demeaning and sexist towards young women. Now, if the boys want to ceremonially give away a part of their undergarments, fine. Equality for all.

I went to many proms in my day, as did dd#2 recently, and we've never heard of it here in NJ. Our girls wear long dresses to Jr Prom and Sr Ball; no short dresses here except for 8th grade dance.

That's what they do here for prom-you always see the boys cars with the garters hanging from the rearview mirrors! Even 30 years ago they were doing the same thing-silly yes, but they still do it.

I have seen young men with a garter on their rearview mirror--but I always assumed it was because they caught it at a wedding.

At my prom we did garters. Guess I didn't think too much about it. I graduated about 16 years ago in Michigan. Not sure if it is still done or how the garters were given. But I do know they went on the rear view mirror.

I'm the prom sponsor this year, and I'm not going to have a garter ceremony like we've done every year in the past. My principal is backing me, but I was just curious if this was still done in other parts of the country or if it was ever done?

In case you're not familiar with it, basically all the girls get in a circle with their dates standing behind them back-to-back. The girls lift up their dress and remove their garter and hand it over to their date. The date then usually puts it on his arm for the rest of the night.

I see you are from Arkansas, DH and I grew up in Arkansas and live here now, neither of us have ever heard of this. I lived in southeast Arkansas and he in north central Arkansas.

It's one thing for prom goers to do this among themselves but an entirely different thing for the school to sponsor it.

Around here prom gowns run the gamut from long and poofy to short and sleek.

What is the point supposed to be?

To me, it seems to suggest to be some sort of souvenir that the guy keeps because he got her to take her clothes off--whether or not she actually did, that's what it suggests. Kind of like in 16 Candles when "Farmer Ted" has Samantha's panties.

I'd love to know what school official/sponsor/parent helper thought this was a great idea in the first place:confused3. I think it's weird and is sending the wrong message to our young women. Aren't we as a society trying to move past sexualizing women? Thankfully, I've never heard of this in my area.

This is the way I feel. Garters used to hold up your stockings ie- part of your "underwear." To me, the implication is that your underwear is coming off. I didn't want this tradition at my wedding, much less high school prom!

Ok I have to ask the unpopular question here. So would you rather this be done in the grad ceremony at the dance etc or possibly after in the back of the limo or at the hotel room etc? My money is on the dance if it is going to be done mind you I also do not see any issue with this at all so I know I am in the minority and I am a father of 3 girls.

Where I grew up in PA no one wore garters to Prom, still don't as far as I know with my nieces.

My DD didn't wear one nor do any of the girls here either. I have only seen garters in the bridal stores and not being sold for prom. And we have 5 High schools here in town so if the girls were wearing garters it would be obvious.

No one wears them to prom anywhere I"m familiar with so there is no taking it off, cause it was never put on!

Do you really think that this 'ceremony' is going to stop anyone from having sex after prom? If that's their intention, I doubt they'll change their kind because they already have the garter.

OMG-You Guys! It's not "Gross" or "Inappropiate" Relax you people and try to unpucker your lips! Jeez!!

It's just a fun, cute high school ritual that has been around for a LONG time. They buy a garter in matching colors...sometimes the guys wear it around their tricep/pec area of his arm for the pictures and then hangs it from his mirrror.

If you think this leads to them being immoral young adults on the road to dropping out, and being drunk degenerates, pregnant at 17, then you're wrong.

It's just a little fun, a ceremony that really doesn't matter that much and most won't remember.

Lighten up people...

I've been through two kids in high school, numerous friend's kids, family, neighbors whatever and never heard of this "tradition". I don't find it as inappropriate as I find it classless.

At least one school I know of, the guys wore garters around their arms to show they'd had sex with their date.

It's inappropriate. Stand your ground.
