Prom garter ceremony

I've never heard of that. I went to high school in Orange county, CA. I would not want my kids participating in that tradition.

What is the point supposed to be?

To me, it seems to suggest to be some sort of souvenir that the guy keeps because he got her to take her clothes off--whether or not she actually did, that's what it suggests. Kind of like in 16 Candles when "Farmer Ted" has Samantha's panties.

IIRC, the garter was given to girls when they walked in at my prom along with a little glass (which I guess was also inappropriate because one year it looked like a little wine glass and the next year a very large shot glass).

If you think what you've read on this thread so far is inappropriate, I think the DJ may have actually told the guys to take the garters off of the girls at my prom because I remember we all lined up and my BF's (now DH) hand wandered. :rolleyes1 While we were decorating, I had paired up several couples who did not have dates the day before prom. I thought about how embarrassing that situation would be for some of them.

A quick google search and this is what you will find as a typical grad dress. So not sure where they would hid a garter.

Stop posting pictures of my girlfriends on the inter-webs!!!! :woohoo:

On my DDs group of friends, they girls all gave their dates the garter when they where doing pics before prom.

I've never heard of a ceremony like the OP has described.

Girls wore garters to prom back in my day (nearly 30 years ago) and girls still wear them now. I've never heard of any school having a ceremony concerning the garters.

Back when I went to prom, our school gave out "souvenirs" at the dance -champagne glasses printed with the date and theme. That always made me giggle. Don't drink, but have a champagne glass!

Now that you mention it, I have wine glasses from my senior prom. Considering the drinking age at that time had turned 21, that's pretty darn strange! We wore garters, and the guys put them on their mirrors. There is no ceremony around here that I am aware of, and many kids go in large groups, without a date.

I have never heard of such a thing in Texas! I would not have participated at all when I was in high school because I went alone one year and with a friend the next.

You might not have garters but you have the whole mum thing in Texas. The first time I heard about the "mums" I had to google to see what they looked like. They are HUGE...some even had teddy bears in them!

I'm from California, but now live in Virginia. I've been to proms in both states. No garter ceremony in either state.

I have the wine glass from my grade 13 grad. Some of us were 19 legal drinking age here and were able to have beer at grad.

I heard of the a similar ceremony sponsored by a fraternity*. Do they have a chapter at the school?

I've never heard of it either. It isn't done here.

Never heard of it either.
Back in the day (the '80's) the girl wore a garter to prom and her boyfriend was the one to take it off (at least that's how it happened for me :) )

Now, as the father of 2 girls, yes, this is totally inappropriate.

Thank goodness my daughter's high school doesn't do this! It's highly inappropriate!

I'd love to know what school official/sponsor/parent helper thought this was a great idea in the first place:confused3. I think it's weird and is sending the wrong message to our young women. Aren't we as a society trying to move past sexualizing women? Thankfully, I've never heard of this in my area.

.

Those things are totally ugly- I can't believe people actually wear them-they look ridiculous.

Prom dresses here are typically short and similar to the picture posted above. Though DS's girlfriend's dress is long this year. :)

Not here- prom dresses are like bridemaids gowns. In fact they hold a "prom boutique" at the school where people donate all their old bridesmaids gowns and the low income kids can go "shopping" there for free for a prom gown.

We all had garters under our prom dresses 20+ years ago. They were presented to your date at the end of the evening, after you took it off and gave it to your date.

The guys usually put them on their rearview mirrors. :)
.

That's what they do here for prom-you always see the boys cars with the garters hanging from the rearview mirrors! Even 30 years ago they were doing the same thing-silly yes, but they still do it.
