Prom garter ceremony

Never heard of it. East coast. I am glad we don't do it here.

west coast here-never heard of it here (nor in California).

offensive to me-I think of a garter ceremony as something done at a wedding. I can't imagine with all the progress that's been made in educating teens that prom isn't the event that automatically signifies 'taking it to the next level' sexually that any school would sanction this kind of activity.


...............hands up-how many of you went to high school with at least one or two girls who had 'prom babies' the winter after prom?

I'm the prom sponsor this year, and I'm not going to have a garter ceremony like we've done every year in the past. My principal is backing me, but I was just curious if this was still done in other parts of the country or if it was ever done?

In case you're not familiar with it, basically all the girls get in a circle with their dates standing behind them back-to-back. The girls lift up their dress and remove their garter and hand it over to their date. The date then usually puts it on his arm for the rest of the night.

Meh. I'll go against the DIS popular opinion and say that I see this tradition as mostly harmless. What is the big deal? Some boy is going to see a girl's ankle? knee? thigh? Oh my!

Not me. There was one girl in my entire four years of high school that got pregnant, at 15.

Heard of it in our area. All the girls still buy a garter for their date. It does usually end up on their arm by the end of the prom and comes home with the boy.

Now I am not sure "how" they exchange it at proms anymore. It was done the way you explained when I was in school and I didn't ask my children how it was done at their proms (both in college now, so just a few years back). I guess I really did not want to know!!

If your school has always done the ceremony I would assume the girls are still going to wear the garters. My question would be, if you take away the ceremony, how do you think the girls will exchange the garters without the ceremony?

I do see that most parents find it to adult for high school but to me the alternative could be a lot worse.

Never heard of this tradition and definitely never knew anyone who wore a garter under their prom dress. But since garters are functionally obsolete and used only in either weddings or fetish fashion, I'm kind of surprised it's something teens are into. Where are they doing their prom shopping, Frederick's?

It seems that way. I've been to six weddings in the last three years and only one of those included the garter thing. I got married in 2010 and also abstained from it...and most other antiquated traditions.

I can't believe I forgot what may possibly be the worst part of it. When they do the ceremony, typically the dj plays, "You Can Leave Your Hat On." You know, the song from 9 1/2 Weeks.

Exactly and with some of the dresses girls wear to prom/grad there isn't much dress lifting going on to see/remove a garter.

Have you listened to the lyrics of the songs in the Top 40? That song is tame.

Cute girls! My DD is only a freshman, so we haven't considered prom dresses yet, but I believe they are generally longer, floor length dresses. Plenty of places to hide that wicked garter.

Prom dresses here are typically short and similar to the picture posted above. Though DS's girlfriend's dress is long this year.

My daughter graduates grade 12 this year and her grad dress is a floor length dress only because I paid for it lol she wanted a mid thigh dress but I said if I am paying you get a long dress lol. I know such an over bearing dad lol. 3 girls who went with us bought short dresses like in that picture and some shorter. They looked like dresses the university girls here wear to the bar lol.

The garter is typically in the same colors that the couple wears and is given to the guy after the prom.

It's not a big deal and I think it's a cute tradition.

Never heard of it. I grew up in CA and my kids grew up in WA............and so glad it wasn't done. Doesn't sound appropriate to me
