~Project Runway Season Season 8 Thread Spoilers Welcome~

What makes you think that Michael, or any of the other designers don't sew for people on the side? While maybe that's not going to get them noticed on a runway, it can certainly be a way to support themselves and their families.

Of course it can be done...but several - like Gretchen - have made reference to being so poor. When Mondo won the $20,000 he said that when he came to NY, he had $14 dollars in his bank account, so now he has $20,014.

Well, I can see why Gretchen doesn't have any money. ;) Her clothes are for one small portion of the population.

Mondo, OTOH, is so talented, he could move across country with $14 and be able to earn more easily, except for the economy that is causing a lot of us to suffer.

Small businesses fail for many reasons, many having little to do with talent. A designer would have to be a decent business person, be able to get the word out somehow, stay within budget, etc.

Ok so you all have to promise not to tell the DIs Dad's club thread that I posted here but I just saw this thread and had to jump in. I watch with my wife and I'm hooked. That being said, Gretchen complains incessantly about money and I have never heard Andy say a thing. I wonder if she will rethink that after she sees last nights episode. Did you see the plywood shack his family lives in? I was never a big Andy fan but that was something. He seemed so proud to show Tim around even though it looked like little more than a campsite. Did it even have running water? I'm rooting for him now, even if I can't stand the hair.

Andy had to have gotten extensions, which I think is a hoot.

I bet that designers have a better chance of supporting themselves (short of stardom) in a small city like Portland or Denver...it's probably nearly impossible to do sewing and be the cool local designer in NYC...but perhaps feasible in a smaller city.

I think it is actually the other way around. In NYC there are so many major design firms that there are a lot of lower rung jobs in the fashion business that people can take to support themselves while getting the contacts to move up and out. Most of the major designers today started their careers working under other designers. Donna Karan worked for Anne Klein, Vera Wang for Ralph Lauren, etc. It is like any other business where there is a lot of opportunity for upward movement if you are willing to pay your dues. Not that there isn't opportunity in smaller markets, but the sheer number of design houses in NYC is pretty incredible.

I guess I was talking about the taking in sewing, making majorette costumes sort of work.

Like Tim said to Gretchen last night, when you have nothing to lose is the best time to take a chance. NYC is competetive but the exposure of the show has to give these designers a leg up wherever they end up.

I think Michael C's lack of experience finally caught up with him last night. I think both he or Andy could have easily been the one the judges chose - but Michael's color comment was what the judges focused in on. I liked Michael's 11th dress, but didn't care for the other two outfits at all. The other three designers had better ideas for their collection - Michael's was very vague (the sky - so pretty much just colors) and he didn't really seem to have a story for his collection to tell.

About the financial problems faced by many designers - did anyone see the special about Season 1's winner Jay McCarroll when he put on his second NY fashion show - like 2 years ago? Even after winning, having established a name, and having two shows at fashion week, he was still seriously struggling. His designs were so well received, but the stores weren't interested in buying most of it because they can make their own clothes so much cheaper in China than buy it from a designer.

I felt terrible for Michael C! Far preferred his stuff to Gretchen or Andy's.

I do think Mondo is the best and will win, but Michael is the one who designs things I'd like to wear.

PP, thanks for the tip about the link to MIchael's C's show. So he DID get to show at fashion week. Cool!

Watching (tivoed) right now.

I'm team Mondo. I love him! I want a Mondo piece of clothing, lol. The first show, when I first saw him, I certainly thought he was a whacko. He seems to have a heart of gold.

I thought Michael C's clothes were pretty. But I agreed with the judges about the color.

Gretchen is just someone I do not care for. I do not like her attitude or her remarks or her clothes. I'm sorry that she is going to Fashion Week.

Andy, Andy, Andy...that bikini... I do want to see what else he made though...as for Gretchen, no interest was sparked for me.

Michael's goodbye was overly dramatic. It was hard for me to even have sympathy for him during that. I do feel badly for him feeling like he failed his family or whatever though. I know a lot of adults who still feel like they are trying to please mom and dad and are afraid of disappointing mom and dad.

I just caught up on the latest episode. I felt so bad for Michael C. :( I would have preferred him to go to Fashion Week over Gretchen, there is just something about her I don't like. Don't care for her designs, either.

I hope Mondo wins. He is my favorite. :)

One more thing..just googled "Michael C Project Runway" and found his Spring collection 2011. They had to show it Fashion week to throw off who was the final three before they aired the show last night. His pieces were beautiful and I believe the best. He had a good shot at winning it all :( Again...what were the judges thinking?

I would love a link if you have one. I tried to find it and couldn't. :confused3 I'll keep trying.

I was lucky enough to go to the show, and I was impressed by quite a few pieces from each collection. I really liked April's a lot.

Even Valerie's '60s Space Alien Cadet collection?

I went back and looked at all the non-finalists. I liked April's as well.

Michael C's histrionics last night made me sad, but I kind of felt he was putting on a bit. Especially since he knows that he still gets to show at Bryant Park. It sucks that his parents aren't supportive of his sexuality or his job - and I think no one ever gets over wanting your parents to be proud of you. It seemed like he was trying to make himself cry at first and then decided to go for angry instead.

With Valerie, some of the dresses were fabulous! But she put weird things over them that ruined the look. I will fully admit that I giggled through hers.

I felt bad for Michael, but it seemed to be a certain percentage fake, to me.

I wanted Michael C to be in the finals so bad! I'd take him over Andy or especially Gretchen. That said..

GO MONDO!!
