No, you're totally allowed to have them. My roommate had one.

The rule is that you cannot have any weapons, or items that could be interpretted as a weapon (including toy guns/swords/etc).

Unless you've convinced your roommates that you are a wizard... making them feel threatened by your wand... then I can't see how someone would misinterpret a sitck as a weapon.

I have to admit... I've always found this a little strange. You cannot have a fake Jake Sparrow sword, but steak knifes are just fine. Weird to anyone else?!

Essentially it's about making your roommates feel comfortable. Different cultures have different reactions to weapons, so it's just easier to ban anything in the like. If your roommates are fine with the wand, you're fine to keep it.

it is just easier to say "no" across the board than to leave it up for interpretation as to what is OK and what isn't.

I'm thinking that's just a joke about Universal Studios. Since Harry Potter Land has made Universal competitive with Disney again, buying anything from Universal is looked down upon. Lots of my friends bought stuff from Harry Potter Land, so no problem. Inspection is not nearly so strict as that.
