I was just told that any of the mod's can read our private messages, that they aren't really private. Is this true?

I hope it isn't true.

If it is, it's not fair and IMHO should be much more publicized so everyone is aware of it.

I'd love to know the answer too!

I don't know who is spreading the false information but that is absolutely untrue.

Perhaps some just assumed this if they have belonged to other boards outside of the DIS.....I have belonged to other message boards where this is normal, especially if the moderators don't like what you have to say in your PMs :rotfl:

It's nice to know that they aren't read on the DIS ;)

Hey, wait a minute -- that's what I wrote in my PM to DMRick!

(Sorry...couldn't resist.) ;)

DMRick, I wouldn't believe everything you've "heard".....there are lots of people who like to spread rumors or to cause trouble.

Heck, there've been rumors that I've been "booted off every website I've ever been a member of" (that is an exact quote, word for word....) and there are rumors that I've had to make new names here because I'd been banned so many times. (NEVER been banned here, thankyouverymuch!)
There've been things said about other people or happenings here too, things that are simply not true.

I'm learning that SOME people just want to make trouble for others. Some folks enjoy it when other people feel uncomfortable. That's where the PM reading rumors/stories fall I think.

Just want to agree with HMG's post.

Some people will say anything to further their own agendas. Just because they think they have the guts to say something, it doesn't make what they're saying true (or sane!).

Take what you "hear" with a grain of salt. You've been here on the DIS since when? Have you ever had a reason to think someone broke into your PMs here? A reason other than this rumor?

I doubt it very much. :)

Thanks for the answer. I would have been very disappointed if this was true. Glad to hear it is not.

I really just wanted the answer. I've been here a long time, but it's not something I ever thought about, so I figured the best place to ask, was the source, rather than to keep wondering. Had nothing to do with a reason, as I stated in my original note..I had been told this, so I thought I would ask..everything to do with just wanting to know : )

I'm glad that PM's are just that.

I'm glad you asked!! Hate to think of anyone feeling bad worrying about something that isn't true.

So, they are sort of "troublemakers" or something?

That's okay, the only PMs I ever receive are from "Webmaster Pete" :( and I guess I am one of 65,000 people who get them. :teeth:

Really Alex?? I was under the impression from previous threads on the DIS that the capablity existed, but that *gosh* ;) no mods/WMs had the time or the inclination to do so. Or is it that mods can't, but WMs can? The only mention on this thread has been of "mods", not "WMs".

I don't know about you, but to me, the word "troublemaker" means a playful mischief-maker.

That's not how I see someone who spreads lies about others and interferes in other people's relationships.

Deceitful manipulator would be a better description for such a person IMO. (I've got some other choice words for such skunks, but this is a family board. :p)

Gee, I thought it was a pretty simple question and was answered. Looking back, I guess this is something I should have asked privately. Didn't realize i was such a sensative issue, and it wasn't meant to be a trouble starter. I asked if Mods could read the pm's. I was told no. I guess the next logical question since it was brought up would be can the web masters read them, but I'm afraid even if they could, mine are rather dull LOL.

Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn!

I don't think you're a trouble starter at all and I think it's a good question to have asked! (my thoughts are that no question is a stupid one.....it's only stupid if you wonder and never ask the question!) LOL

:)

Weren't you once OWNER of a board called "Trouble-Maker's Clubhouse"?

Besides, this thread started out as a simple question about PMs, but WHO is starting "trouble" on THIS thread?

If the software here is like other places, the *capability* exists for the WMs (or at least one or two) to go in and read people's PMs at least from the database.

But with the number of people on the DIS, the practicality of it is totally impractical and I feel that the people who run the DIS wouldn't do so unless there was a very good reason.

I feel the PMs here are "safe".
