Well now that the parents know I think the teens should be aloud(sp) to use Xanga at school? Wasn't the principal, or was he/she at a home computer.

The internet isn't illegal. I can type or put up a picture of whatever I want to. The principal might not approve of it but he/she went too far by calling the parents. The students need to fine some dirt on the principal and get revenge...

I'm sorry, but are you serious? #1 schools ban a lot of websites because they distract kids from the purpose they are at schools for...getting an education. A lot of schools block yahoo mail, aol, ebay, xanga, etc. The OP never said where the principal was but if he/she could access the site I would think he/she was at home.

No the internet isn't illegal, but guess what is. Slander. O and btw if youre not 18 you cant post any old picture you want to. Explicit things cannot be posted by the underage, or viewed by the underage for that matter so even if you are over 18 or 21 and you post something innapropriate you are responsible for monitoring that no one underage is accessing your page.

As for the students getting dirt/revenge on the principal. That's just pathetic. The principal is looking out for the best interests of his/her students and she has every right too. And i'm sure the principal isnt stupid enough to post private information on a publicly accessable site!

If she chooses to spend her free time doing this it is her choice. No one can tell her what to do with her time.

Never said she couldn't. I said that she has too much time on her hands and should be using it to make the school better. That's all.

The problem with these threads is that we dont have all the info. The pincipal for all we know could have checked this on her own free time at home. In which case she has no obligation to be using that time to make the school better.

if someone did notify her parents it could be the difference between her getting help or getting worse, maybe even comitting suicide, she talks of death and seems to be fixated on Curt Cobain, not good signs...

why would you want to help her hide her pain, and her problems...

You don't know what her relationship is with her parents. they could be the problem, and saying something to them could make things worse for her. Let her vent to her friends and if they feel she needs help, hopefully they will take the proper steps.

Oh mah gah. I give up. :rolleyes2

And if I was a teacher and students were not just complaing but saying malicious things about me then I would be more than highly annoyed.

If a principal is going to spend his/her time worrying about what middle schoolers think of him/her, then he/she's in the wrong profession, IMO.

teenagers rarely recognize the warning signs of suicide, this girls best chance is an adult...
even if her parents are the problem, reading her site might be a wakeup call to them,,or if another adult sees it and does something,,,convincing her to hide her thoughts or password protect her site can only have negative results...

I'm sorry but inappropriate is inappropriate no matter what profession you're in. And having kids going around and spreading untrue and malicious rumors about teachers can undermine their authority and make their jobs much more difficult. And it could also lead to other problems for example if one student thinks its amusing to write "Mrs. X is having an affair with student Y." there are many unwarranted legal implications that Mrs. X might face if a parent reads that site.

The Rights of Individuals to be Protected Against Liable and Slander: Be careful what you put on your electronic publications, websites, or e-zines. Be especially careful about making comments about others. Understand that everything you say in an electronic document has equal legal ramifications to printed documents. Bandying gossip via e-mail or the Internet could carry the same legal ramifications as slander with similar repercussions.

I got this from a University of Houston Website, thought you all might like to read it.

I remember a few years back a case where a student put up a website bashing the assistant principal. The kid was and parents taken to court over it saying slander and such. The judge ruled against the assistant principal saying it was free speech.

If the parents really want to know whats going on in their kids Live Journal or Xanaga site they should look. My parents have the capabilities to look at my website. And the pricipal should focus on more important things, like the child's saftey. And enless the sites are talking about a school shooting or physicaly harming someone, I do not belive the parents should be notified.

I'm amazed at the number of people that think it's ok if the kids were just calling teachers names and such, whatever happened to teaching kids to respect their elders and those in authority positions..??

Its called the "my child is always right no matter what he/she says or does" attitude.

There are other warning signs besides what someone blogs. In fact, I see journals written by people who I know who say stuff like that just to get some attention that they feel they are lacking. This girl isn't even from the school in question.

Have you tried contacting her to see if she is okay?

::yes::

In fact, I think if parents want to know what is going on with their kids, maybe they should just talk to them.

I took a look at this web site. It is filled with crap!! Teens ragging on other teens, teen girls advertising for ***, photos of teens on their blogs where they are scantily dressed or not dressed at all. Some blogs are normal boring teen blogs. If you don't believe me, sign on with a user name(you don't have to start a blog) and just cruise the blogs. The site claims to regulate the postings, but nothing is regulated from what I saw. I was so shocked at what I saw and I would never let my kids have a blog on a site filled with such trash. I think teens are doing it to be cool not realizing that some of the blogs are x rated. Please take the time to educate yourself on this or other blog web sites to see what trash is being posted. My worries are for the teens of this site being watched by the pervs of the world. Some of these blogs record daily activites and where the kids shop, eat, watch movies and so forth. Any wierdo could be reading all this with plans to try and catch up with an unexpecting teen.

I voted no opinion.

A kid that puts there real name in a trashy blogging forum is bound to have repercussions. Smooth move on their part. I have told my kids that anything "in print" is fair game for someone to read on the web or notes in school, as well.
If you need to discuss something private do it verbally.

Let's put it this way....you can have a knock on your door and the "Feds" can whisk your computer off in a blink of an eye. Everyone who uses a computer should ALWAYS keep that in mind!!!

Not knowing why the principal called the parents on, I can give no opinion. We also don't know the students and their history.

I wouldnt say "Totally invasion of privacy" Just not appropriate. The principle shouldnt care what the children are doing out of school. A website, oh wow. Why must she call there parents..The kid smoking dope, Yes by all means call the paretns
