Princess Phoebe's Pre-WISH-Trip Report (arriving in MK 4/17/10)

For Mya's hair and myself, I tend to use Organic Olive Oil moisturizing Hair lotion. It works wonders. Cuts down on breakage and stimulates hair growth. You can find there website here and you can even order a free sample. I personally use all of there products and like them alot. Also, have you considered gettind Tessa's hair braided before you leave? It may keep better that way and keep you from having to do it everyday. Especially if you are planning to use the pool.

Oh, and I've been looking for someone to do braids on her for three years now. Every time I see someone with nice braids I ask who did them and they say their mom or cousin or someone. I've taken down a couple of numbers but have never called because I feel weird asking to come over to their house and have it done (since I don't know them). I've had two friends offer to braid her hair but the first did a single french braid and the other did two french braids so I don't know if they don't know how to do the cornrows or just misunderstood what I wanted. Neither of them ever wear their hair braided so I don't know. :confused3
That's why I was asking about braiding in Orlando. I figured there had to be more people around that know how, being so close to the Caribbean. I was thinking maybe I'd leave it down for the first week at the parks then get it braided before we leave for the beaches. Maybe that's a bad idea if sand will get in them? I don't know how tight they can get it. I know how to french braid but even that makes my fingers go numb because I have carpal tunnel. :sad2: I know that my friends in Phoenix even have to go out of their way to find someone. Don't know why it's so hard here in AZ to get braids.

Im glad that you have some stores that may have the products!!! As for the hair braiding, you can always call and have them braid her hair at your house. If you want I can search hair salons that do hair braiding. They have to have them right? At Disney they don't do the whole hair, just a couple of strands and it cost like 46 dollars!!!1

We live about 45 minutes south of Tucson, which is where most of the "goods and services" are for our area (malls, salons, etc). We are two hours south of Phoenix, but we go up there every once in a while and I'd be willing to try one of those if it lasted at least a couple weeks.

One time I ran into a friend and her girls had gorgeous braids in so I asked where does she take them. SHe proudly announced that she did it. I would have been thrilled if they weren't moving out of state the following week! Seriously, we've had no luck down here.

I was searching for the braiding places at Disney and found pics of the one "string" they are charging money for. You have got to be kidding me!?!

Sorry to hear the lack of luck you guys have had. It would be so much easier on you if you could find someone to braid Tessa's hair. It is definitely not worthwhile to travel two hours for braids. Before Mya's hair fell out, I started to teach myself how to braid hair. It started out rough but I did eventually get the hang of it. I know that that is probably not an option for you due to your carpal tunnel. Just one more idea. Is it possible to get the people who french braided your DD's hair to do small individual braids all over her hair? They are like small plaits and the easiest thing to do when starting out when starting out learning how to braid. Hope you are able to come up with a solution.

I used the sea bands for morning sickness and bought them at a regular ole pharmacy. I did find that they helped.

LOL!! I hope we get that same gentleman when we check out!!!

I have a whole lot to say about this issue, but don't want to hijack Pheobe's wish thread!!! I do agree with you Pamela, that alot of it seems to very nit-picky....boy could I tell you a story!!

Oh now that's simply not fair!!!!!! I'll be expecting a pm miss Shannon!!!!

How scary about the helicopter patrol.

We used to live in an area that wasn't so good. It was a normal event to have helicopters shining down. One time they had blocked off our tract...:scared1:

Yay for friends. It sounds like you understand your traveling dynamic between the 3 of you. That's a good thing.

Imagine my surprise when I compared crime rates for South Tucson and it was higher per capita than Detroit. :scared1: (Not dissin' Detroit, but for the size of the city, I was a little surprised). Being in Law Enforcement, DH loves it. Being a mom, I hate it. We are actively searching out transfer opportunities that would please us both.

I'm glad you have your flight info!!!

It seems like you will have some long travel days. You should be happy you have 2 hour layovers in Chicago. That airport has the most flight delays in the country. It does seem weird they have you going through there though. :confused3

Thanks for the link on the other thread! I hope that having the most delays doesn't end up making our trip even longer! Is it for weather? I would hope that mid April isn't too bad, even up north, but then I've never lived north of the rockies.:confused3

Re: 'extra discounts' or whatever after the 'official' Wish Trip is over..................I actually told the gentleman who did our check out at GKTW that we were staying on property for another couple of days and he, on his accord, changed the date on our GAC (and initialed it) and told us to absolutely continue to use it and wear the buttons etc. I love love love MAW for doing what they did for us (what they are doing for all of you) but I'm getting alittle bit crazy with some of the nit-picky stuff I've been hearing lately.

Anyway, plans for the extended portion of your trip sound great!! And yay on the flight times. The clock is ticking..................

Pamela

I think that if a family is specifically extending for the purpose of more time in the parks, they should not have a problem extending the "treatment" of the wish trip. I can imagine the nightmare they could incur if people went traveling around the country, to sports games, concerts, etc and said "this is my kid's wish trip" as if they expected something.:sad2:

I second that when it comes to the love I have for MAW. They went above and beyond for us. Most of you know how my mom and i had a arguement and she decided to leave me and my dd at a gas station miles from GKTW. By time me and DD finally got back to GKTW MAW had already called a private car service and in no time we were setting out to enjoy our last day in the parks. We really did not have to worry about anything and that made our trip so much more enjoyable.

I am so excited to learn this first hand. When we found out Phoebe was approved I was excited to take a trip. Now that I've met all of you and read about your trips, I know it will be a once in a lifetime experience. :wizard:

I've done my share of hijacking, so feel free. :lmao: I think this is the place where we can share the WOW moments as well as the What the??? ones.

She really does huh!
Thanks for the tip. I have never needed to shop for something like this so I didn't know if there were good brands, knock-offs, etc
.

Great pix of the kids!

Oh now that's simply not fair!!!!!! I'll be expecting a pm miss Shannon!!!!

Seriously! Talk about a cliffhanger!popcorn::

Beautiful px Melissa!! I hate to cut Liv's hair as it grows soooo slowly (she still barely had any hair at one). Once she cut a big chunk off of her bangs (down to the scalp) and it took over a year to get it back to where it was (and yes, I did cry)

Phoebe was born with lots of hair and it never fell out, just kept growing and growing. I couldn't believe she had a foot to spare at 4 yrs old. As always, Tessa has to be the opposite in everything.

i hope your wish for a safer job for DH comes true. I can't imagine...i really can't what it's like to be the spouse of someone who put their life on the line every day.

My sister lives in Phoenix, which is usually the reason we go up there. I'll have to look up some places before we go again and see who I can find.

Are the plaits like a bunch of small pony tails, then braided out? Instead of being close to the scalp like rows, they hang off? I might be able to do that type, if I did it one step at a time through out the day. I got ambitious one time when she was a baby because I was sick of putting a bow or headband in and nothing else. Since her hair was too short for a ponytail or pigtails, I decided to just do a bunch! The lines weren't great, but I managed to get her whole head done. Biggest problem is, she's so active, nothing stays for long. I've been shopping for a silk scarf or 'do rag for her to sleep in at night. I found the pic of her li'l piggies. She was 14 months.

It's almost not even funny how different my girls are. Phoebe can wake up in the morning and have her hair fingercombed and be good to go! I've never seen hair so easy. Mine certainly isn't!

It's kind of surreal. When I hear about a coworker being injured or murdered, I'm certainly contemplative, but you have to let it go. Two of his coworkers died last year. We were stunned to hear about the officers in WA who were ambushed. Stuff like that happens all the time. He was born to be a "cop" (his whole family is or was) and willingly passed up the job offer when we were newlyweds because I was scared. After many years, jobs and frustrations later, I realized it was his calling in life. His passion. I would rather he do what he loves to do, catch bad guys, and die doing it, than die unhappy and unfulfilled at an older age. I hope he gets to do both, though. (Catch bad guys and live to be old) I am always grateful for people who appreciate his willing sacrifice though.

No problem!

Chicago is a major hub so if there is weather there (rain) or delays elsewhere everything gets backed up. I'll be hoping for sunny weather across the country when you leave. (I'm not trying to make you nervous. :hippie:)

Eh, I try not to stress over things I have absolutely no control over. Not saying I'll be happy as a clam as I sit in MDW airport for hours watching our GKTW time go by, but no point in worrying about it now.:rolleyes1

I am a bit misty (surprise). I am SO appreciative of public servants-even when they give me tickets-I say "thank you". Thank your DH for us!

I understand the calling thing-my grandfather, 2 uncles, SIL and dad were all pastors. I did many other things before I stopped fooling myself and realized what my true calling was.

Individual braids are exactly like that without the pony tail holders. You just part the hair in little boxes then plait. I will try to find a picture of DD before she lost her hair. The pic when Tessa was 14 months was great. My DD started out like that. As the hair gets longer it gets more manageable. Also, I usually use an old pair of DD's thick cotton stockings for a night cap. My mom used to use one for me and my sisters when we were younger. It stays on through the night easier then a scarf will for younger kids and works great. I will post a pic of that as well when I come in from school.

I don't think you have to worry about knockoffs of Sea bands. I've actually used a couple different kinds and they do the same thing. They work because they hit certain pressure points so as long as you position them right they should be fine. I have seen them at walgreens, walmart, CVS etc.
As for braids, the little plait type aren't too difficult just time consuming. I have a freind who swears corn rows are eaisier when you learn how but I've never tried them. I had both daughters hair braided in the Carribean and the sand stuck in both for like a week but it was worse in Tessa's. Jenna had the little braids all around her face and Tessa had hers in half corn rows. The top was braided and the back fell down straight. Tessa just wanted the experience because we were in the Carribean, but I fell in love with the idea of having Jennas hair braided all the time. She has a really sensitive head and I have to fight her constantly just to get her to brush her hair at all and if she doesn't it looks all matted. It's also usually hanging in her face. For some reason it was less of a fight to have her sit still while they braided it than it is just to have her brush it and pull it out of her face every day. She says it's because she knows it will last for two or three weeks and she won't have to do anything with it until then. :rotfl: Whatever works I geuss! If your thinking of Savannah have you checked out the possibility of Tybee island for a day trip. We were planning a trip to Savannah but had to cancel it and I wanted to check out Tybee island because of the beaches are supposed to be more laidback and quiet and you are supposed to be able to see alot of wildlife particuraly sea turtles, but I don't know if your going at the right time for that. They also have Dolphin Tours that I thought looked interesting. Here's a link http://tybeeisland.com/.

Can I just say....

I love the DIS! :)

Only on the DIS can you find someone that will help you with hair!

My friends just don't get it. "Why would you spend hours on a website about DISNEY every day?!?!?!"...

And this is why! Because it isn't about Disney - it is about LIFE!

Ok...carry on.
