Princess 1/2 walkers?

Does anyone have any idea of how to become a walking coach? Can someone maybe put me in touch with a walking coach that could help me figure this out? There are not any near me and I really think I want to try to become certified and start a club - maybe even a "Destination Disney Club' To earn our Princess Tiaras! Sounds good anyway! Seriously I would love to at least find out more information....

How about you just post your question as a separate thread and maybe some of the running coaches would respond. I imagine that not all read this walking thread. Shame on them. ;)

Ahhh JohnVn its just like you to come up with just the right advice! The only probl is I have no idea how I did it last time lol!

If you are maintaining a 12:39mm pace while increasing your distance all you need to do is continue with your training and when the race days come around just go with the flow. I would think that even if you started in the front of the last corral, with a pace like yours, you will be ahead of the sweepers even with pictures.

I've done the Princess 4 times and the Tinkerbell once as a "senior" walker. That pace should have no problems, especially if the training has been done. I try to train for about a 15:00 pace and I have never had a problem with the sweepers, until last year when DD says that we needed to stop for a picture with the evil characters. ( I always tell my grandchildren that my favorite Disney characters are the evil ones. We waited over 20 minutes. DD then realized that the sweepers were right behind us. She spent the rest of the race screaming at me, "Mom the sweepers are 30 people behind us!" We finished the race at little less than 16mm pace and didn't get swept. Oh, yes. The picture was terrible!"

I would love to do the Princess 1/2 as a walker. Don't know if I can keep the time up for that many miles yet. I read though the whole thread and am inspired to try though!!

I started the couch to 5K a couple weeks ago and do an average of 13mm. My walking is anywhere between 13 - 15 & running is 10-11mm. I am doing this T, TH & Sat. I am trying to take some longer walks on Sundays to get going, but I don't know how long I can hold that pace.

Any tips? Just keep plugging along and it will get easier? I haven't signed up yet since I may just have to do the 5k. I really wish there were a 10k -- I know I could do that!

1st- GREAT for wanting to do the Princess. :cool1:

How long are your longer walks? Before speed comes a good base of steady miles. Far too often people think they are ready to increase their speed dramatically and instead wind-up injuring themselves.

Sounds to me like there is plenty of time for you to prepare for the Princess.

I currently only walk a couple miles 3 -4 days per week (doesn't seem to be enough time this summer with all the kids' activities!) I'm hoping it up that slowly on Sundays and am at the end of week 2 on C25K. I'm not a good runner though so am hoping to do more walking and just hope I can keep the pace for the whole 13.1 miles.

Thanks for the encouragement!

So I have started training to walk (and maybe run a little) the princess this year.
I started the couch 2 5k but since I hadn't exercised in years I found I was getting a lot of shin pain. So now I have started walking and I am doing 5k 3 times a week and not concerning myself with speed but working on distance. I also don't have the shin pain anymore

This weekend I am going to try to do 10k. then I will continue 5k twice a week with longer walks on weekends

Does this sound like a good plan?

Oh I will be walking it by myself but my friend is coming with me and she will be my cheerleader :cheer2:

Tinkermom76, you have found what I consider the joys of walking, LESS to NO PAIN. As far as I'm concerned, it is not all about speed until one has a good base of miles. Building strength through miles will allow everything to move smoother and faster. Listen to your body when you try the 10K knowing that it is a big jump from a 5K and if the feedback is not good, please slow down, or stop if a major issue arises. There is the "no more than 10% increase in miles per week" rule when running/jogging; however, when walking you do not have the high impact when striking and because of the lack of pounding, I found that this rule did not apply to me. Also, it's great that you have a cheerleader, so enjoy.

Anne34, you have commitments that come first so I applaud you for getting out as much as you are doing. Please try to increase your distance, time permitting, for a couple or three weeks before you tackle the running.

Lots of information on strength building at one's fingertips so make use of the information.

Thanks! I am thinking I will map out a 7.5k route for Sunday and if it goes well maybe try 10k next weekend. I still have time to work on distance

Do you use MapMyRun to do that? I love that site! It's so great to be able to plan your route ahead of time and then just GO without having to worry about anything!

No I usually just use google

I did 7.5k today at 15.39mm!!!:banana::banana: I am under pace for the PHM... so excited

I am so happy to see new people getting excited to walk the PHM and some veterans who have continued to train for a return race! My toenail (or lack of I should say...) has finally after two weeks gotten to the point where I can put my sneakers back on!! I am excited to get out for our morning walk tomorrow! Hope it wont be too treacherous after the "break" - ....

What happened to your toe nail???

I thought I had posted the story but I guess not...we were on vaca and we went to ride the Essex Steam Train and I thought it would be fun to do something a little different so we paid the extra money to ride in the first class parlor car...which had swivel chairs...when my DD14 said "ck it out mom they swivel" I was beggining to swivel towards her - and she was going faster and the bottom of the chair caught my big toes toenail and proceeded to rip it off like opening a book :confused3 Only it was still holding on by just about 1/2 of one side. It hurt soooo bad - and there was a lot of blood. But the train had already left the station so there wasnt much that could be done. There was a medic onboard (looked to be about 10yrs old ) He wrapped it up - while he was doing it I noticed tylenol in his case - Iasked if he would give me one - he then explained that he could not "dispense any meds" - but he offered me A GLASS OF WINE! i took him p on TWO of those ;) When we got back to the station we headed straight to the medical center - SIX NOVACAINE SHOTS later they removed the remainder of the nail. So it had been swollen and painful for almost two weeks - but the good news is I am fine now and this morning we did 2 miles @ a 15:18 pace! :cheer2:

Dreamer, I lost a toenail too! Back in high school on the last day of school, I was wearing sandals standing in the hallway, with my leg stuck out, resting on my hip. Some jackwagon came running through the hallway and stepped on my foot (accidentally) WHILE TURNING to keep running, and it ripped the nail right out, just like yours! The school nurse wrapped up my foot and told me to soak it when I got home until the nail fell out itself. Almost 20 years later, and my toenail, while completely regrown, still looks 'different' from the rest of my nails.

Hurt like heck, didn't it!!! I'm glad you were able to bust out some miles! Baby your toe until your nail comes back.

All I have to say is OUCH!!!! Ive had my big toenail removed, twice, but with proper numbing and that was bad enough. Can't imagine your situation.

Glad to hear the shoe is getting more comfortable. Good luck!

Now that is what I call perseverance! Great job.

That's for sure. Wow, Dreamer, such a crazy freak accident! Glad you're on the mend and have such a great attitude.
