Princess 1/2 2013...anyone else???

Just popping in to say hey!!

I've been hitting the treadmill when I can but not with any consistency. I need a better plan.
But I saw the pics of the Tink medal yesterday and I've decided I want one of those too!!! so my new goal is the Tinkerbell 1/2 and the Princess 1/2 in 2013.
Now to see if I can fund both trips!

Congrats to all of you who have begun training! My friend and I were where you are last year atthis time. My best advice is to stick as close to your training schedule as possible. We never skipped a session, but did have to move it a day here or there for confilicts that could not be avoided. However we perserveered and as a result feel we are pretty much prepared for the race - only 24 days until we leave!! We will be walking the entire race - hopefully quickly enough not to be swept up! We may just be naive too since this is our first experience...but we are feeling optimistic right now! I wish we had a Publix here - all the cake talk is making me want one REALLY, REALLY BADLY! Keep up the good work and good vibes here!!

:goodvibes I totally agree with what you said. Its about doing this race for YOU and only you.

I've never had a cake from publix but man that sounds good. My friend jokingly said he was going to tie a margarita to my head and i'd have to chase after it and then it would be my reward for finishing the race

Keep up the good work!

There were people running the marathon that stopped at some of the stands in Epcot to cross the finish with a beer or frozen beverage. It was pretty awesome watching that. I don't think the half will take you through WS after it opens, but I now have a goal for next year. Not to finish, but to finish with a drink in hand.

Wow princessRhi GREAT GOAL!! Im joining in on that one too!! However for this year I think I will just concentrate on not being swept up! Possibly next year finish with a drink in hand!! Lol!!

Hi, I'm aiming for the Princess 1/2 in 2013...I will be turning....ummm...i can say it........40 that month and thought it was a great goal. Anyone else with me??

I have just started a walk/run clinic in town and have a bunch of weight to lose first. I am loving running! NEVER, EVER thought i'd say that!

I will be 40 in Feb 2013, too and will be there for the half!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At least you are doing it!! :thumbsup2 You'll find a program that works for you. :goodvibes

Thanks for the encouragement. Good luck on your race! I hope y'all have a great time!

WOW! I would be worried the bartender would be slow, and then I'd get swept.

haha omg thats an awesome goal! That might now become mine as well haha :thumbsup2

Today I started my training! :cool1: Day ONE is done! :thumbsup2

As I mentioned earlier, I'm about 55lb overweight, and I know I have cardio issues, so I am doing the Preconditioning Program (or whatever it's called) from Jeff Galloway before doing the Couch 2 5K program before moving on to the JG Half Marathon Training (Whew! Makes me tired just thinking it).

I made sure that I scheduled all training days around my current work calendar so I can't use the excuse of work to not train. If I stay on track, I'll finish all training by the second week of October and I can 'maintain' until Feb 2013. I've ordered a treadmill that should be here in a week or so to help keep me on track, and so far, my 14DD is wanting to do this with me, so I have a buddy now! If she backs out on me, I totally understand, but it won't stop me from keepin' on! In 12.5 months, I will be running through the castle, running through Epcot and crying when I see my family at the finish line. I want it BAD.

As I told my DD when she asked, I'm doing this for ME, not anyone else, and I have never wanted to accomplish something as much as this - not just for the medal, but to be able to say that I - The Fat Girl, The Lazy Lady, The (Now Ex) Smoker - finished a half marathon. (But the medal is certainly icing on the cake I will for damn sure order from Publix when I cross the finish line! You southern folks know what I"m talking about!)

Day 2 is not until Wednesday - but I'm ready for it!

Way to go :thumbsup2 I know what you mean about doing just for yourself. My family has shown no interest in going down with me. So, I may be solo. I think running my first 1/2 and spending a couple days in my happy place alone sounds sorta refreshing.
As a mom, wife and daughter I spend most of our vacations making everyone else happy, this is for me :)

I have read a lot of women who are planning on going "solo" to the Princess - how many of you have actually done this? I am not sure if I would personally enjoy it, but am interested in hearing if anyone has actually done it. How was it? Were you lonely at all? did you ride the rides or just walk around? Etc....

I've wondered the same thing. I may be going solo. I think I could keep myself busy enough during the day, but I would probably miss my DH and kids in the evening. I'm hoping my friend will go with me even if she doesn't run.

I think I'd love a solo trip! The thought of exploring at my own pace without anyone whining or telling me to hurry up? Yes, please!

Hey there neighbor!!!!

I'm probably going solo too. We will just be coming back from WDW in December so I don't think I can swing airfare for everyone.

My mom used to go to Disney all the time as a solo traveler, when she was visiting a relative. She never had any issues and enjoyed Disney just as much. Plus, if you wear your finisher's medal in the park (which most people do), everyone will be congratulating you so you will not feel alone!

I created a 'bucket list' a few days ago. No, I'm not dying, but I'll be 40 in two years and there still is so much I haven't done--and a marathon (of any kind!) is one of them.

I was scouring the internet, looking for info on Disney Marathons and was brought here. I know NOTHING about marathons, 1/2 marathons, family marathons, etc... so if someone can clue me in, please do! What's the difference and distance of each, where do they usually take place, and what are the typical requirements and registration fees for each?

I've gotta train for any marathon, for certain. I have a treadmill and while it may not be the best way to get training in, it's a start, right? Also, I'll probably be doing this solo, like many of you have stated. I won't lie... I'm scared to even get started! But great things tend to happen when someone takes those first steps--so I'd better give it a try!

Thanks in advance!

Glad to have you on our team!!!! Half marathon is 13.1 miles.
There are several hosted at WDW. Go to rundisney.com and there is a bunch of info for you there. I went on Youtube to get an idea of each race. There is also videos for rundisney on youtube. This is where I started and ended up on Jeff Galloway's website for a training schedule.

I uses the Google maps distance calculator to figure the distance around my neighborhood so I could figure out a good running path for spring/summer training.
Like you I have never tried anything like this before. Good Luck :thumbsup2

Also, Map My Run and RunKeeper are great websites for route mapping.

A question I forgot to ask: Do any of the marathons allow WALKING?

Yes, I think most, if not all, do. I know for sure the Princess Half does. Whether walking or running, you do have to be able to maintain a 16 minute mile. If you don't, you could be swept (picked up and not allowed to finish the race).

Jeff Galloway is the trainer for Run Disney. He has training programs for every level of fitness. Just google Jeff Galloway training program. He has walk/run training programs. Take a look around.

And welcome! :cheer2:

Welcome! All of the Disney runs allow walking assuming you keep the pace.

That being said... I'm pretty confident that if you're serious about training for a race that's a year away, you will likely be faster than the 16 minute mile. It's all about building endurance and maintaining pace.

I have always followed Hal Higdon's training plans (www.halhigdon.com). When I get to big deadlines or other busy times, I usually will do my mid-week shorter distances on the elliptical (I don't like running at night alone) and keep my long runs outside on the pavement or if need be on a treadmill-- the big thing is to not skimp on your long runs. You're basically building up your body to handle pounding the pavement for a few hours.

As for some of your other questions, the Disney runs can give a bit of sticker shock as far as price goes, but most larger marathons and half marathons are comparable in price. This past year, I ran two Rock and Roll half marathons (San Diego and Providence), and both ran me around $130-$150 apiece. I also ran a women's half marathon in MA for $55 and the Disney marathon relay (one half marathon leg) and my share was $150. You can find smaller races for cheaper, but most are local and won't have as many spectators or runners. I prefer to run the larger races just because the crowd energy is awesome. Of all the major events I've done at the half and full distances, I find Disney's events to be so smoothly run/organized and the most fun I've had. The Rock n Roll events have (in my opinion) been a little disappointing, but they're still good events especially for beginner runners.

The only requirement for most marathons and half marathons is that you show up and run :) If you are a fast runner, they'll just ask for proof of your being fast so they can place you in the proper starting corral. I believe the only marathons in the US that require a qualification time are Boston and New York, but you can still find a way to get in. Boston has fundraising bibs so you can still run if you want to raise $3-5k for an organization, and NY has a lottery system of guaranteed (fast times, number of applications, fundraising, etc.) and non-guaranteed (every other runner) bibs.

Thank you, HM2 and PR! The information you've supplied has been very helpful.

PR, I'm not looking to do the Boston or NY marathons, but the 'Race for the Cure' is something that interested me; perhaps that would be a good starting point for marathon participation--after I've trained a while, of course.
