I got a mailer from DVC today indicating that on Jan. 15, 2009 the price for AKV will go from $104 to 112.

At the same time, they are raising the minimum number of points you can purchase at BLT. Currently you can buy contracts in 25 point increments at BLT, but starting Jan. 15, 2009 the minimum add-on there will be raised to 100 pts.

I was thinking about adding on 45 pts at BLT but I wanted to wait until April or May... this definitely throws a wrench in things... :confused3

I cant believe that. In this economy, that is just bizzare. In the back of my mind, I was thinking of doing a 50 pt add on at BLT during our August trip, -- guess that ship has sailed!

Resale , here I come again! Wonder how many people are saying that???

On a side note: maybe some enterprising DVCer should buy multiple 25 pt contracts and resell them after January!:lmao:

I agree Rileygirl ! Granted that us members are a 'captive audience' but I don't see why they would raise add-on minimum at BLT. I haven't received the mailer yet that OP did. It crossed my mind that raising the add-on minimum to 100 might be tied to some other incentive offered :confused3 but OP didn't mention anything like that.

Perhaps they are targeting a more "recession proof" audience??:confused3 :confused3

Hmm

Maybe some enterprising DVCer should by the 100 pt contract add on, but have it split into 4 25 contracts..... get the promotional pts, then sell a couple of the little contracts.....maybe even after stripping them pirate:

Joking, joking joking as she weighs the possibilities, could I sell the suckers for 120 a pt?? What do Jaki and **** want for commission I wonder???

Seriously, just kidding!

On a serious note - it seems like disney will really shoot itself in the foot by not allowing dvc members buy 'cautious' amount of add on pts. I wonder if they are doing that because of the incurred costs of closing -- if Disney pays for the closing costs on all these little contract add ons, it must be expensive

I think an increase to 100 seems like a lot. I could see maybe going to 50, but 100 is ridiculous. I guess they are just trying to get everyone to buy instead of waiting. I hate to admit it but it might work on me. There is just no way I could use another 100 points. Does this increase only count for BLT or all DVCs?

I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that Disney pays the closing costs for add-ons? Too much expense for not enough profit on the smaller add-ons?

I guess if this was the case, though, that it would apply to all the resorts ... hmmmmm, wonder if it will?

It would be great if someone would scan in that flyer so we could all check it out...:surfweb:

Requiring 100 point addons will limit the number of small point contracts that end up on the resale market and thus the expenses that go with those 25 or 50 point contracts that people buy to get into the system. Maybe Disney is trying to close that loophole that lets people have master contracts with less points than Disney requires for a first time purchase. it will hurt those who only want enough points to stay a few days at BLT with the 11 month window and who already own several hundred somewhere else - I have 520 points in three contracts and might consider something between 25 and 50 points but will not be buying 100 unless I hit the lottery. Right now I can't justify buying any but maybe next year I would have and if the info is correct will not be adding on at BLT.

I was told there was an incentive of 100 (developer) points with a minimum 100 pt. add-on. I haven't seen the mailer. If the minimum has been changed to 100 pts....I think it's a mistake.

I'm so tempted to call my sales person and see what she says. I could definately go for another 25 pts.

Possibly the mailer is designed to advance sales into the Disney's 1st quarter of this fiscal year. The sales also free up capital committed to BLT construction.

By the time they get to the price increase if the market is bad they can always roll out a discount program to effectively roll back the increase.

My sense on the 100 point minimum is similar to others -- it reduces the number of small contracts which are probably expensive to transact and administer.

The mailer only lists a price increase at AKV, not any other DVC. Also, it only mentions the add-on minimum change for BLT and not any other DVC. So, I would expect if you only wanted 25 pts at AKV or SSR you'd be ok.

Thanks for the heads up on this & posting what you learned from the mailer you received :) Most of us here, it seems, haven't received this as of yet so it's good to know especially if plan is to add on at BLT.

My guess on this is that if a lot of people do small add on's at BLT with just enough points for 1 or two nights stay it would mean a lot of checking in / checking out / housekeeping so perhaps by raising the minimum here to 100 points people are more likely to stay for a minimum of 4 -5 nights

so i totally read this and i just bought in for 170 points. i had heard the minimum was going up to 200 points to buy in?

I want to buy 27 points at BLT so that my wife and I can get a one bedroom, lake view, at BLT for two days every other year in January. We enjoy having the whole family over for a vacation in a grand villa at OKW and enjoy a couple days of unwinding after they leave.

I was in no hurry to buy those points, but I guess I will be in a hurry now. I commend DVC for figuring how to get people like me to buy now.

It is hard to criticize people for knowing how to make money! :thumbsup2

Price increases are an excellent marketing tool. But in this economy I think it is cavalier of Disney to do it. They must have a lot of rich people as members, or potential members, or else how can they afford all these increases. I figure a lot of it is going for marketing materials like that snazzy one they sent out for BLT. That thing probably cost Disney $20 a piece to get made. They do have some wonderful direct mail pieces and I envy their marketing budget.

I just saw this thread an it kinda PO's me.

Maybe I could understand changing the rules system-wide for add-ons at non-home resorts to 50 to maybe even 100 point minimums but we were told when we bought (as I'm sure MANY of you were too) that we could add on at any time for a minimum of 25 points and at 50 points +1 as we saw fit.

I don't know about where you folks are from but 'round here, that's a verbal contract. We were never told it could be rescended at any time. I'd bet my attorney would say that's a verbal contract.

I intended to build my measley 160 points (yea measley's a good word when you look at the point charts compared to other resorts) 25-50 points at a time until I got where I wanted to be at BLT. Now I don't know what to do. God this ticks me off!
