Pretty specific ? about some more jerky rides

Hoping (almost knowing for sure :lmao::rotfl2: ) my fellow DIS'ers can help me out with a pretty specific ? I'm trying to plan for.

We'll be hitting DW in a little under 12 weeks. :cool1::banana: If the situation allows, I'm really hoping on doing one of the bit more jerky rides that don't allow me to stay in my powerchair (which does a great job of helping me out dealing with jerks and staying safe :goodvibes ). I know it'll cause me pain, but what the heck! We'll be there long enough, plan around it, except the consequence and celebrate another ride under my belt. :thumbsup2

Thing is, I've just had a finger amputated this week. While 12 weeks is a long way to go, we already know I won't be done with rehab by then even close. I've been known for slow healing, easily reopening wounds, basically getting myself into a long long rehab for anything. :rolleyes1 Knock on wood, but if things go as expected, I'm cleared to do such a ride but only if I can do it in such a way I can more or less protect that hand from smashing it into something. The rides I can use my powerchair on this isn't an object as my chair is my own protection bumper. :littleangel: Jerky rides that would require transfer could be something else.

Now, I have NO idea about the following rides, as I've never done them. I would love to hear other DIS'ers experiences about these rides and specifically; are they jerky in such a way and/or is the vehicle designed in such a way that the two combined could lead into knocking a hand into some part of the vehicle because of the jerkiness?

It's not like I go waving my arms all around like :cheer2: , I've got pretty OK body control, but when confronted with unexpected jerks I can find my arms moving around unexpected somewhat. As long as I have some range of movement right on/in front of my lap without being able to hit into anything I should be fine.

Rides I've got on my shortlist;
- ToT
- Space Mountain
- EE
- Splash Mountain
- KRR

I think with EE, ToT, and Space Mnt your going to want to hold on which may bother your hand. Otherwise, you should be okay depending on where you put your hands.

I have never held on with my hands on KRR, I just prop up with my feet and sit back and relax. Splash mountain is really tame except for the big drop and but you don't really need to hold on for that ride.

I would definitely advise against Space. It is very jerky. And also boarding and unloading are very difficult.

Tower is really not that bad; you are firmly held in by a seat belt. And all motion is either straight up or straight down.

Splash definitely should not be a problem. There are two internal down and ups, but no worse than in Pirates. And the big drop starts slowly and at the bottom you are pushed into the seat. There is no jerkiness at all.

KRR is not really jerky as it is water, but the rafts do spin and twist a lot.

And, as far as Everest is concerned, the ride itself is fairly smooth but there is a lot of motion form one side to the other.

So the only one I would really advise skipping would be Space.

The only issue you might have with KRR is the waterfalls. They may be too much downward pressure on your hand.

I agree against Space Mountain and I am not so positive about EE. Splash would be a definite one that you could probably handle ok.

I want to agree with everyone else about Space. I've probably got the same main diagnosis as you (working on getting in with a specialist to get the diagnosis) and the last time I road Space it was a "never again" experience as I ended up with pretty bad whiplash. I don't know how your core stability is and your neck, but it's got very little back and neck support.

I don't know about EE as I've never actually been to AK, but as a bendy person my favourite Disney coaster is actually Rock'n'Rollercoaster. I know it's not on your shortlist, but I wanted to bring it up because if you're small enough (I'm 5'4" and I think my experience would hold try for people a few inches taller than I, as well) it's by far the most supportive coaster I've been on anywhere.

I agree with the others about Splash Mountain probably being okay. It's less jerky and more the one drop which is pretty smooth and the end of the drop is also fairly smooth. And the rest I've never ridden.

I agree you should be okay for everything but Space - i can no longer ride the WDW version because of how jerky it is. If only they had actually fixed it so it was like the DL version...

First up; thanks for the info everyone! OK, it's obvious Space is out. Can life with that. :)

Good point about holding on, Deerhart! Haven't even considered that, was totally focussed on the hands somewhere on lap option. Oops. ;)

Just had a  . Might be a smart idea to look up some YouTube films off these rides and look them over with my rehab team. Especially my ot knows me by hart after 10 years so providing I can find a couple of good shots, we should be pretty well able to determine which rides could be a good option.

WheeledTraveler, funny you recognized what the deal is. Don't think I talk that much about my eds on the DIS, but apparently enough to be noticed by some. ;) Dislocating will be part of the experience, but that's daily life anyway. Any trip to DW will lead to some permanent deteriation in my case but it's a price worth it. Don't know if I'll actually end up doing one of these rides as the situation will ultimately make the decision, but it's high up the wish-list. My main thing for this specific situation is my not so great propriocepsis. It requires a constant awareness and even then I'll knock into things. No biggie, part of me, but it is something we are very wary of with regards to the rehab of my hand.

R&R; don't know what the deal is with that, but somehow never really appealed to me. Perhaps because I'm not a rollercoaster die-hard to begin with but rather 'go' for the theming, special effects, etc.? :confused3 Anyhow, I'm going to remember that one as an option also. With my 5'7", I can't be called a particularly large lady, so that might be a good safer option. That and Splash should give me enough realistic options. :goodvibes I'm silently hoping for ToT but if that turns out to be too much, I've got enough other great options to still do one. :thumbsup2:cool1::banana:

Well you've got another EDSer here too  So I definitely get where you are coming from.

I dunno if you've been on it, but the worst ride I have ever been on with the EDS problems is Primeval Whirl - I thought my head was just going to go flying off! Dinosaur was terrible too!

Yeah, we do have to be more aware of where we are at all times - But I supposed we all get used to it :) Hope you have a great trip!

Nop, never done those rides. They don't appeal to me at all and I know what the result will be. I'm only willing to dislocate for something I find very appealing. Repeated ones only for rides I love. :rotfl2: My list may be somewhat short, but it's a great list. :goodvibes

Worst for me was the Safari, as can be expected to be bad. Thankfully got to do it in my own chair, without it I woul've been a midday snack for the lions. :lmao::rotfl2: Did do the sunrise safari last year; much better! Still very jerky, but as there is a lot more time available they can make the ride a lot less overly jerky. Combine that with a lot of standing still and a great driver and great tour CM that both were in the loop about me not loving jerkiness and it was a totally different experience. VERY much worth the extra money, imho. Both healthwise and animalwise.

If you like theming, I can definitely recommend Splash Mountain off that list. I've heard TT also has good theming, but haven't been on it (the direct sort of drop that TT does is a type I don't like so I've never bothered).

I suggest going through the queue and preshow for ToT. I go every time, but I do not like the drop at all, so I take the "chicken exit" at the end. It's pretty cool!

Definitely watch an EE video before you decide - there are some curvy parts that can throw your body into a side, and the backwards part is pretty intense too.

Or how about getting a protective brace to wear on those rides, just one that covers the injured area?
