Pressed Penny Suggestions

The pressed pennies are great for collecting and searching for the machines. When I was younger I would crazy for these cranks and I have a bunch of pennies from my first couple trips. Now I'm 23 and don't collect them anymore but if I would see a new Tink or Daisy Duck one, I would be waiting in line to crank it out!!! :thumbsup2

The ketchup bath works very well for the pre-82 pennies - this year I tried using a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser on the pennies after being rinsed from the ketchup soak and it really helped clear off any grime/tarnish left in the small grooves of the penny design.

I don't know how to be sure the penny design is pressed onto the head side of the penny - which way do you put it in the machine? Head facing to the left?

Also, you can sometimes find cheaper pressed penny books at the Disney Outlet stores in Orlando. Oooooh! Less than 10 days before we leave for FLA!

ketchup cleans pennies?
What else does? Vinigar? coke?

Now I have to go thru my pennies!!!

Glad I stumbled on this thread...I was saving all the new pennies...now I need to find the old ones and clean them up.

Would also like to know if there is a place to get change...I dont mind carrying a few tubes of pennies but the quarters get heavy!

I have a 10ds who has been collecting pressed pennies since he could point to the machines. A few tips:

The mini M&M tubes do work great when you alternate 2 quaters 1 penny. He also uses one for quarters.

He takes a 3rd empty one to put the pressed coins into, when we get back to the resort he loads them into his holders and prep's for the nextday.

He carries everything in his fannypack:3 mini M&M tubes- one loaded for pressed pennies, one loaded for pressed quarters, on for complete pressed coins.

Depending on our touring plan, extra tubes loaded for pennies go in the bottom of our bag.

Many of the pp machines are in retail stores, he's so busy getting his pennies he rarely asks for other stuff. :cheer2:

Not a cleaning tip. Just saying my favorite pressed pennies are from MK Toontown. It is baby Mickey and Minnie -- and I think Goofy? I only got two so I would have another one or two to look forward to!

We use empty film containers to carry our change too. Also, we prefer to have the image pressed on the tails side of the penny so that you can still sometimes see the year on the heads side. For most machines, this can be done by putting the penny in heads away from the quarters. Also, on a trip last year, we got penny press albums at the character warehouse for $.99!! It sure beats the $6 in the park- we only bought 3 and wished we bought more!

What is the character warehouse to purchase penny folders for .99!!

Thanks for all the tips!

i'm so gonna got to an disney outlet and get a cheap penny book, instead of paying $7 for one. thank you

the head to the right, and the head will get pressed. that is how its works on most machines

as the building on the other side can sometimes be seen after being pressed and doesnt press as well, as some of my pennies have

cillit bang, that is what i have cleaned all my pre-82's with

IS THERE ANYWHERE, WHERE YOU CAN PUT YOUR DOLLARS AND GET THEM CHANGED INTO QUARTERS? as when i want to get them, i never have enough quarters

No tips here. Just adding that the pennies are our favorite souvenier....and a bargain compared to so many other things that your could by. We have the album also. We bought it at Disney though...never were so lucky to find one as cheap as other posters had mentioned. We have a Disney outlet here but they don't carry that kind of stuff. It was just a catalog outlet until they got bought out, now it's a Disneystore outlet. Not as much fun.

It was a great little "hunt" to find the Penny Press machines & collect them.
Quite reasonable & the kids really like it.
We also use the mini M & M tubes and have them pre-stacked, such as, 2 quarters, 1 shiny penny, 2 quarters, 1 shiny penny etc......that way we are not searching all over for quarters.
AND, Use Shiny Shiny Pennies, they turn out the best.
You can make a game of it too if you have time......
Collect one from each Resort !!!
Get One from Each Country !!

Have Fun !! :woohoo: :butterfly :dogdance: :fish: :mickeyjum

I agree that shiny pennies are the best as long as they are pre-1982. Post 1981 pennies are make of 95% zinc with a 5% coating of copper. When you squish the penny the zinc shows through. Over time the copper can fleck off and make the penny look even worse. Plus the zinc pennies tend to tarnish worse over time and there really is no way to clean them. Believe me I'm no expert but I have squished a penny or two (closer to 300) in my day and copper pennies are superior. I also prefer to put the image on the tails side of the penny.

i have clean my pre 82 pennies but they still are like dirt and stuff on them how can i get that off??

the pennies now have there color back, but just in some areas grime and stuff??

how can i clean that off???

Did you soak your pre-1982 pennies in catsup or a vinegar & salt mixture? We did yesterday and it really worked! For those grungy, stubborn marks we took an old toothbrush dipped in the solution and scrubbed away. Out of 150 pennies, only about 5 were just too icky to salvage.

I've also heard using the Mr. Clean Eraser pads works well, but I didn't try it myself.

totally clean now, got their shine back now, using a normal rubber, they look brand new again!!!!
