Pressed Penny Suggestions

I enjoy collecting the pennies. Used film containers for the coins.

heys guys i got back from disney yesterday, and i like getting the pressed pennies too, and you know the books have places for 6 pressed quaters, well they still do those sort of book but now they have a big ones, well not that much bigger, just a litter taller and its just for pressed pennies, theres 64 slots.

Okay, this may be a silly question, but is there any way to screw this process up? I did this at the Empire State Building in NYC and it didn't press my penny correctly. I just don't want the kids trying to do it themselves and ending up wasting a bunch of money. Thanks!

My girls love the pressed pennies also, we already have 2 1/2 full books from WDW and 2 from 'other' locations. We also do the M&M tubes stacked quarter quarter penny. A couple of things I have learned regarding the tubes

  • The tall/king size tubes are to big, after they are half done the money slides around losing your stacks.
  • M&M Mars recently redesigned the tubes to taper at the bottom, your last two quarters will be snug (nothing banging it on the machine won't get out).
  • Do NOT prestack the tubes if you are flying. It looks a bit suspicous in the X ray machine. Best to have a bag of change and an M&M snack for the flight

This is interesting... I never thought of that - but I'll keep that in the back of my mind as I pack in November... I can just prestack them when we arrive in WDW!

I'll reask my question since no one answered - don't let me down DISers!

"Do any of my fellow DISers know - do the penny machines accept Candian one cent pieces? (Are they called pennies in Canada too?) I think my naievity is showing through with that last question..."

it dont think that WE can actully screw up the process, but somethimes i think the machine can be a bit out of time and drop at the wrong, as sometimes some penny machines are out of order. but no you cant do anything to screw it up.

I don't know about Canadian pennies being accepted, but I don't see why not - it's not paying for anything - just passing thru.
My DD helped cleaned my pennies with Hot Sauce from Taco Bell. Just laid the pennies on paper towels, laid the sauce on top - waited - rinsed, then flipped and repeat. As after-thought, she did suggest putting them face down first, so you can remember which side needs cleaning easier. :thumbsup2
and now I gotta take out of the M&M tubes for flying, dang!

Most of the machines are mechanical, but some of the older machines have to be cranked to the pressers' choice before pressing. You line the picture up with a red mark. There's a big hand crank. Then you put the money in and turn the hand crank. Turning the crank can be tight for a little one, but older kids could do it fine. I don't know if it's possible to have the crank between designs, but you could certainly get the wrong design using the older machines. The mechanical ones a two year old could do easily enough. The hand ones work fine, but supervision would probably be helpful for the kids.

I already have my large M & M tube pre-stacked & ready to go, 2 quarters, 1 shiny penny etc.....
We are flying in November, Now what Do You Suggest I Have to Do ???
Okay to put in Checked Luggage ??
Has anyone done this yet ???
WOW !! How times have changed.....
Keep me posted !
AND Thanks :tilt: :tinker: :goofy:

We prestacked our M&M tubes and put them in checked luggage without any problem.

I know this is kinda off-topic but . . .
We recently got back and organized our pressed penny albums. (BTW - We really like the larger books with 64 penny slots and no quarter slots.) We have the following WDW pressed pennies and are looking to possibly trade with anyone who has duplicates of pennies we don't have. The pennies we have available are:

Country Bear Jamboree, (Zeke), Magic Kingdom (3)
Country Bear Jamboree, (Big Al), Magic Kingdom
Minnie Mouse (Full Face), Magic Kingdom
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad (Train), Magic Kingdom
Buzz Lightyear (Full Figure) (2)
Splash Mountain (Mickey, Pluto, Goofy + In Log)
Splash Mountain (Brer Rabbit), Magic Kingdom
Jungle Cruise (Boat), Magic Kingdom (2)
Adventureland (Safari Mickey and Shere Kahn), Magic Kingdom (2)
The Lion King (Pumba) 4 of 7
The American Adventure (Uncle Sam Mickey), World Showcase, Epcot
Mexico (Mickey in Sombrero), Epcot
Lilo & Stitch (Stitch), 4 of 7
Animal Kingdom (Safari Goofy w/ Camera)
Magic Kingdom (Eeyore)
Frontierland (Cowboy Mickey), Magic Kingdom

Some of them are very clean, some old and dirty, most pre-82.

PM me if you have a trade offer. Thanks.

You can also get a listing of pressed penny locations from Guest Services at the parks. I read about this last year and picked up the currently listing when I got to Epcot. It sure saved me a lot time. Also, you can soak the pennies in vinegar and then rub them with some silver polish to get the rest of the grime off. Just a warning though, it is very time consuming.

When we were at AK in July, the security woman checking bags saw my daughter's pennies in her fanny pack. She said to make sure we did the pressed quarters because they are taking those machines out of the parks. (just the quarter ones)

I was wondering if anyone else heard this or could confirm it?

My kids had a great time doing the pressed pennies. We came home with 49 pennies. My one son mapped out our paths to try to find them. We printed out a list first, so we knew which ones were in which park. Then I let him map them out so we could find them. Many machines were out of order, which was a little upsetting, but we did end up with a lot of pennies.

I was told to clean the pennies with mouthwash & it really did work. We used LIsterine, because thats what we had handy.

I only brought about 25 pennies, because to be honest, I didnt think my kids interest would stay with it the whole trip, but it did. So we ended up with weird pennies that we'd get at the shops. They didnt always want to search for pretty ones. Its ok, the pressed pennies are great. We bought 2 of the big pressed penny holders and they are working out well. Its not huge, its actually the size of a thin paperback book.

On the way home, on the airplane, the kids each got to choose the pennies they wanted in their book. It was a great souvenir, and something to keep them busy on the plane trip home.

Yes that's right, I watched her hand clean about 100 pennies this weekend in anticipation of our trip down there in October! She even made me empty my drawers to look for more! I tell you,it's something. She hand cleaned each and every one until they were shiny. But in all seriousness, I think it's great. We really, really, love going to the World and can't wait to get back in October.

If you go to any gift store you can find these neat little albums made for the pressed pennies. They are nice and small, hold the pennies perfectly, and can slide into a backpack or tote with no problem. We bought one for each of our kids and they love them. I think pressed pennies are the perfect memento from your Disney vacation. They are small, inexpensive, and finding new machines is an adventure all in itself :0)
How much do those albums ccost?

ok so I only have a hand full of pre-1980's p[ennies (I've been using the rest torward my trip...but found these...I know Iknow...a Dis sin...but every penny counts!)

there are two different pressed pennies albums

1. holds 36 pennies and 6 quarters $.6.50 (i think)

2. holds 64 pennies and only pennies $.6.50, just the same as the other book, but taller and has 4 pages and on the front cover and Mickey Mouse shaped Head pennies

No. 2 is the best option, i have one there really good to hold them in
