Premium vs Preferred Sites

Can you tell me the differences/pluses between a Premium campsite and a Preferred campsite? We have decided on our rental and it will be a 40 rv.
The renter said if we can budget it, a Premium would be nice but if the budget doesn't allow it, we'll be fine with Preferred.
We got a good deal on the rental so I booked the Premium.
Is it size, or mainly location?

For us the big difference between premium and preferred is the sand. The preferred have a sand pad behind the concrete and the premium have just a concrete pad. We stayed at a preferred the first time and the kids brought sand in with them every time they went into the pop-up. Our preferred site was pretty small so we had to put the pop-up on the concrete and the sand ended up being just a play area for the kids. So we decided from then on it was premium for us. We just hated the sand! That said, a lot of people don't care about it or use it for tents or put their camper on it.

Thats funny, bc at first I misread your post and thought you were saying the sand was a plus-and thought...baby+sand+7 days=ugh.
So, I like the idea of less sand too.
Thanks for the thoughts.
Keep em coming, and if you have any tips on suggesting location I'd appreciate that too. Not really sure if I should request being near (or away from) any particular things. Thanks

Yeah - definitley no sand is better for us! LOL! Our boys would be covered in it in about 5 seconds flat! :)

As far as location, we love being close to the marina (within walking distance). This time we're going to request the 500 loop, with the other loops around there being next. It's so much easier to just walk to the boat than it is to get in the car or wait for the bus. And because we don't have to even fold up the double stroller to get on the boat, it's the only way we travel unless we drive. So that's the locations we like. If you're not going to the parks much I'd probably suggest asking for something close to the pool... I'm sure other people will chime in with more actual number suggestions - we're still pretty new to FW itself and I don't know the actual layout of FW offhand. :)

Since the "modernization" a couple of years back most of the loops have been converted to premium loops and cable is now standard in all. The 100, 200 and 300 (pet) loops are preferred loops and closest to the marina and restaurants. These are some of the original loops and are very shady but the sites tend to be a little closer together. I believe the 1600 through 2000 loops are full hookups only and they're located the farthest away from the marina but contain the same specifications as the preferred's. Everything in between is now a premium loop. As was previously stated the main difference is no sand pad. The sand isn't really that bad, it is hard packed not like the loose sand you find at the beach. They also have an upgraded grill and an upgraded picnic table. I believe the closest loops to the main pool are the 600, 800, 900 and 1300. I think the 400 and 500 loops are closest to the outdoor movie. I am trying to remember all of this while sitting here and typing on my phone and I'm sure I have some details incorrect. Check out the Fort Wilderness FAQ sticky at the top of the camping forum for maps and better loop information.

1400 is closest premium to the Meadows movie area. The sand is not sand, but cocina, or crushed shells which pack together and stick to everything. Premium sites have wider concrete, as well as deeper, and wider entrance concrete for easier entry.
