I just bought through resale 150 points beginning with 2007 (April UY) and received 30 points banked from 2006. Since the 2006 points will be lost April 1, 2008, if I make a reservation for March 30th through April 6th of 2008 will the points be used when I check in on March 30th (prior to the expiration of my UY) or will I lose them because they will not be considered used until I check out on April 6th (after the expiration of my UY). :confused3 This is my first DVC reservation so I appreciate your assistance and advice.

I'm pretty sure it's day by day...so you can use your banked points on March 30 and March 31; after than it will be next year's points that get used...someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm reasonably certain that's how it works...

DMKEDM is correct, because you are crossing use years, it will be two separate reservations in the system, each using ponts from the appropriate use year. The reservations will be linked, and show on the website as a sngle reservation so you will not have to move or check-in and out. We often have reservations that cross use years.

That is correct these points need to be used by or on the last day of the month so March 31. If you can not use them you can check out the rent trade board and perhaps try to rent or transfer the 30 points. Be sure to read the top few posts that have a thumbtack looking thing next to it if you decide to do this.

To be more specific. Point usage is calculated based on check-out date.

Thus points expiring March 31st, 2008 could not book the night of March 31st, 2008, only up to March 30th, 2008.

This holds true for the 11 month mark, you booking window is determined by the check-out day. Also for Holding points. The 60 day limit is the date of check-out.

In the OP's specific case, 2006 banked points would expire Midnight (11:59:59.999) on March 31st, 2007. Thus he can use those banked points for any available nights up to and including March 30, 2007, but not March 31st as the check-out date is April 1, 2007 a new use year.

As stated above ressies can be linked using points from different UYs.

Thanks so much for clarifying the usage rule for me. I will make my plans accordingly and reserve the 29th and 30th to use my 2006 points. I'll bank my 2007 points to be used March 31st through April 5th of 2008. You guys are great :woohoo:

Actually, you are incorrect. The points used are determined by the check-in date, not the check-out. This is true for both point usage and the point charts.

Okay, I feel better about not knowing the answer to this question since we have a variety of opinions. Has anyone had a personal experience with a reservation that crossed the U/Y? Also, if I call DVC services and ask for a clarification can I trust the information provided or does it tend to vary depending on the the person you talk to?

As I said, I've had several reservations that cross use years.

Doctor P is correct.

Confirming - Doctor P is correct.

Confirming Carol, Chuck, and Doctor P are correct. :teeth:

Yep - all right! :teeth:

Points may be used for any dates up-to-and-including the last day of the Use Year - in this case thru March 31. They cannot be used for any date beyond March 31, since they will have already expired (and in this case, MS would not allow you to even make the reservation beyond 3/31 using those points).

You guys are the greatest. I can't thank you enough for your patience in explaining to me. I'm back to my original plan of March 30th and 31st using all of my 2006 points and some of my banked 2007 and April 1st through 5th which will finish off my 2007 banked points. Now all I have to do is be able to secure a reservation when the 7 month deadline comes along. :yay:

Sorry to disagree with so many of the masters but, my Guide states I am correct, and I called MS today and the Advisor first said I was correct, then changed her mind and checked with a supervisor who said I was incorrect.

So I booked a test vacation that exceeded my current use year points (April UY - a GV at OKW) for 03-31-2007. The system rejected it, and after intense discussions between the Advisor and the supervisor, they stated I would have to use April 2008 UY points for the night of March 31st, 2008. Since no borrowing would be necessary, I did just that, and lo and behold, the ressie was made without problem. (I cancelled it, my points remained UY 2008).

So I don't know if this is a problem with the MS computer system, the DVC POS changing interpretation depending on whom you speak to, changes in they system, or a failure to compare apples directly to apples.

Specifically, I tried to book 03/31/2008 today with 2007 points (April UY) and could not. I could book it directly with 2008 UY points.

I'm open to explanations.......

It sounds like there is a bug in the MS reservation program.
It will (correctly) look for points in the 2007 use year, then if none are available, get 2008 points from that pool, without "borrowing them."

Ahhhhhh.....

A good explanation, that makes us all right (sort of :thumbsup2 )

Thank you!
