Preakness - Barbaro - OMG!!!

My heart aches. :sad1:

Just watched the press conference. Hard to believe.......he was doing so well.

I hope that Barbaro's "strong constitution" (the vet's words) is able to pull him through this very dire condition. Frustrating that we won't know for MONTHS whether or not he has beaten the laminitis.

I listened to part of the press conference on the radio. The vet said that he will be second guessed, no matter what the outcome. I feel for him too. It is sad that Barbaro came this far and now has this complication.

Just saw this on the news and they said he might need to be euthanized. I do not believe there is not any hope. I know that these are the best of the best taking care of him but there MUST me something thay can do for him.

Bella--this was explained earlier on. Lamintitis is the one infection that a horse can't get--b/c it is just one of the ones that cannot really heal. Horses must stand--and the infection is caused by standing unevenly.

(laymen's explanation--the horse experts would be able to reply a bit better).

Intellectually I understand this but I just feel emotionally that it is hard to accept.

My horse Cameo got laminitis when I was a kid and had to be put down. It was really sad. I'm really hoping that they can pull off a miracle with Barbaro....

If you want more updates, this site seems to have them every couple of hours or so: http://www.timwoolleyracing.com/news/2006/07/barbaro_updates_4.php

"Bobby" had a good night. Slept for 4-5 hours and still has a good apetite...it's these kinds of things that will keep him alive.

I read the transcript of the press conference and they CAN cure laminitis, it's just a very difficult and long process. The transcript was a very interesting read.

Keep sending P&PD...

I know there are more "important" causes to be concerned about...but there is just something about this horse.

SEE!! I knew they could do something and if it is difficult and long so what. I know what you mean about more "important" causes but you are right about this horse. I am a dog lover and would usually give this story a passing interest but there is just something ...

I was watching the race on TV when it happened and have been kind of traumatized by the image ever since. I can't get it out of my head. :( I grew up taking horseback riding lessons and reading the Black Stallion novels over and over.... I had a menagerie of stuffed horses and a large collection of Breyer horses. I was obsessed! As a kid, though, I was pretty naive to the uglier side of racing.

For all these reasons I just can't get this horse out of my head. I'm praying he pulls through.

Me too!! I still have my Black Stallion novels and a few of my Breyer horses which are now in my daughter's room. We had two horses when I was in young and we'd go to where they were boarded every weekend. I miss that. As an adult I wish I could have a place big enough to have a horse or two.

Sending P & PD Barbaro's way... Its heartbreaking.

Me too...my dogs are my babies (although, perhaps I shouldn't admit that :rotfl: ), I don't have kids so they are it for me.

I started having an interest in horses after watching Smarty Jones come so close to winning the Triple Crown. And then my interest kinda dropped off...until I saw Barbaro at the Derby. I was in love !

He has inspired me to learn more about him and other horses and racing in general...but I can't stop thinking about him...it's almost surreal.

I want him to beat the odds against him AGAIN!

I didn't know that--from all the earlier postings it did seem incurable.

That is cautiously optimistic news.

:cheer2: Barbaro!!!

My mom had called me with the news and gave me a link to the same article. I almost hate hearing updates because I only want to know when it's good news. Luckily he has shown improvements today but I know he's still far from being in the clear. I was so glad to see that they fitted Barbaro with a sling! I was wondering if it could be done....it should help him a lot. The poor guy is not done fighting yet.
Keep up those prayers!! :goodvibes

I am a horse enthusiast and I am amazed at how far the owners are willing to go to save this horse. :thumbsup2 Yes, Laminitis can be cured depending on the severity. I really hope this horse makes it, there is just something about him that makes me pray he does!

Dr. Dean Richardson explained that laminitis is an "extremely painful" condition. If Barbaro's laminitis cannot be successfully treated, then I cannot see keeping him alive and subjecting him to a lifetime of pain . . . THAT would be cruel.

That being said, I also have been a horse lover since childhood, and am hoping with all my heart that Barbaro makes it . . . and lives a pain-free life.

Exactly, and while Dr. Richardson admits that they cannot eliminate the pain, he feels (by the way Barbaro is acting) that the pain is manageable at least for the short term. I thought he explained their treatment intentions well...he just seems like such a good vet. A mix of logic and compassion.

I really do hope there is some kind of miracle and he pulls through this.

Barbaro seems to have such a wonderful personality and he sure is a fighter. :goodvibes It's hard to think about what "might have been" had he contiuned his racing career. I just hope at this point by some miracle he survives this.
