Prayers for Taiwan

I think it's best that you drop this discussion because you are getting into this territory with very American views.
Not everyone views the world the way Americans do. Not even when you are allies.
I don’t think it’s an American view that the Dutch were starving and needed outside help, badly. Knowing this you would expect them to be one of the first to help.

I meant no disrespect. I only tried to put an example that I thought would get my point across. It was meant to be based on facts not a political view. Sorry if it was taken otherwise. :-)

Reminds me of a great moment on Parts Unknown. I can't remember where Bourdain was, but I believe it was Dakar.

They were discussing how the city was evolving and becoming this or that. An interesting and full discussion. And Bourdain said very succinctly, "Yes, like New York". And the other person said "Or Hong Kong" with a sly look.

Anthony took a moment but got it.

I have never forgotten it.

I’ll take NYC any day.

I'll try to bring back this thread to something Disney related, since this forum revolves around Disney. Major US companies like Disney, Apple, and others have all contributed to the rise of China. Heck, every one of us consumers have contributed indirectly. US companies and western consumers have kowtowed to the wishes of the Communist Party, turning a blind eye to many of their alleged human rights violations, for the mighty dollar. What are we to do? China/Taiwan is a Civil War that never ended. Sovereignty over Taiwan is non-negotiable for China. They have tied the Chinese Dream to taking back Taiwan. Unless Disney and other US companies decide to cease doing business with China (which won't ever happen), China will inevitably take back what they perceive is theirs. Time is on their side. Besides, I highly doubt the American public has the stomach for a WW3 with China, especially having spent 20 years in Afghanistan. Just my opinion.

If China takes Taiwan, US/European companies will leave China. Public protests will start and those companies based in China will feel a finically strain from those protesters. The companies can go to many other NATO friendly countries for the same positive business outlooks/cheap labor (Mexico/India). Japan, South Korea, and others in the Pacific won’t stand by since China wants their disputed territories as well. Where does China’s aggression end? Personally, if Disney left China, most would applaud. Instead, have them invest in Disney Tokyo. China’s government, I believe, owns both theme parks in China anyway. Where’s the US benefit in that?

I don't think China will "take" Taiwan in a way that will make western companies leave, the same way they "took" Hong Kong. Hong Kong was annexed back to China in 1997, and it wasn't until only a couple of years ago that China really "took" it back through their National Security Laws. In essence, they took it back from within, through elected officials chosen by the Hong Kong people. I don't see Disney threatening to leave HK. In fact, didn't Josh D'Amaro announce new park construction for Hong Kong? Sure some of the youngsters protested for a couple of months. But Hong Kong is more and more becoming part of China and it has taken 25 years. I think Taiwan will be similar, albeit its a bigger problem for China with a larger population. So I'll say it'll take China 50 years to absorb Taiwan without ever escalating into war. I'm not saying I agree with all this. I abhor China's communist policies. But there isn't much I could do other than maybe refusing to buy some Disney tumblers for $50, which I'll gladly do!

Disney rents the theme parks from the Chinese government, I believe. Why can’t they just make more money in Japan? Leave China behind and build Disney India instead. They would make more money either way.

I feel your sentiment but I could think of one thing: China's population 1.4 billion, Japan's population is a rapidly aging 125 million. No other country has that kind of market power that our companies can't ignore. Disney knows this, Hollywood knows this, Tesla knows this, Apple and Starbucks knows this.

Most of the 1.4 billion live in poverty not in a Disney marketing area of wealth population.

I don't refute the high poverty rate, which can never be fully gleaned anyways due to China's lack of transparency. But it's not an accident why so many governments and companies want to do business in China. They have the people to buy our goods, and they have the people to make our cheap goods. All I'm saying is, China is way too important for western corporations, and we all contribute in some way in fueling China's economic engine, the same way they fuel ours. We're all inter-connected somehow. And a war has massive consequences on both sides, if not the whole world. No one wants to risk that over Taiwan. That's just my guess.
