My DS (turning 3 this Saturday) started to use the potty today:banana: This may be a funny question but this is my first son. At home, his potty has a shield so that he doesn't spray every where but what do I do in a public restroom? I would think that he is too short to stand. So, how do we keep his pee pee in the bowl and not all over his clothes and me while balancing on a large toilet? Is there a special travel potty for boys? Or any tricks that are helpful? I know this is a silly question but I really need your help. Thanks!

great question, the last time i tried to help my 2.5yo on a big potty he peed all over the floor!! i'm so glad we are going before he is fully potty trained, i can't even imagine having to visit every potty in "the world", lol. I have see some travel, folding seats, try one step ahead. at least he could prob sit w/o falling in and hold himself down while he goes. good luck!

We taught ds to point his pee pee down and that usually takes care of the "spray" issue. Our small potty chair also has a pee guard that comes off and he's liked to take it off and it would get lost but even w/out it on since he holds it down it's not a problem.

DH told me that the mens rooms at WDW have shorter urinals - not sure if that's true of ALL the mens rooms but if so, then this is a great reason for daddy to take charge of potty time whenever possible.

There's also a potty training aid for boys called the "WeeMan Urinal" that hangs on the side of the toilet and is helpful in teaching them to pee standing up since it lowers their target (and I suppose better than having them try to balance on a step stool). Maybe something you could use at home to get him used to that before you travel.

Also, don't forget that most of the baby care centers in the park also have a small size toilets for the younger set to use. Not always convenient but if you're in the area thats the best place to head to.

People are going to think I'm horrible. But we trained our boys to stand when peeing, and we trained them in disposable plastic cups (you know like the big red ones you have at parties) --- they were both afraid of the toilet when really little, so this worked. When each of them started training, I'd buy a big stash of those cups at BJs. And when they were too little to pee in the big potties when we were out (we did this at Disney for two of our trips)--- we would bring them in the bathrooms and use the handicap stall and let them pee in the red cup- we'd dump the cup in the toilet, and I always carried big ziploc bags, put the cup in the bag and then throw it out (so it's not getting pee drops all over the trash). I remember some of our first trips to Disney with a stash of big red cups in the bottom of our stroller. We really didn't have to do this too long--- by 3.5/4yo they can usually handle the bigger toilets. But until they were tall enough for big public toilets, I just carried a backpack rather than a purse, and kept some red cups in it. I know, big waste of plastic etc. But, you do what you have to do, I make it up by not using disposable cups/plates for eating LOL. We also always keep a couple of rinsed plastic gatorade bottles with the caps in the car for those last minute (no time to get to a potty) emergency. Only had to use them once or twice (we take alot or long road trips), but it's nice to know we have them.

When we could get to them, we tried to use the toilets at the babycare centers--- they are smaller .

Good Luck with the potty training!!!!

My 2 year old is potty learning and he does just fine with having been shown to point it down. He is a small boy in both height and weight and does fine on normal toilets... he occationally pees standing up too we taught him that letting his brother show him how to water the plants below off the back deck

When we use big people toilets he scoots back and pushes his ***** to point down and then goes. I dont hold him or anything and have not been sprayed.

We dont use the sheild on our potty though because my elder boy when he was potty learning kept pulling it off. So I tossed it and went ahead and taught the point down thing

goodluck

Great question! My DS3 is finally trained, and we were in Disney when he was just turning 3, if he was too short to stand and sucessfully reach the potty, I would have him stand on my feel and I would help him aim:cool1: . I think that the previsous poster who suggested the plastic cups had a fantastic idea especially for the real young ones. I belive they also do have the lower urinals for the boys also and some places do have the real little toilets, you just have to look. Good luck and have a great time.

My DS2 is just trained and we have had success with a couple of things. When I began training him he sat backwards on the toilet and his peepee kind of just automatically points down. The downfall is you have to take shorts & undies all the way off, but it works well. Now we have taught him to stand so that's great too. DH has him stand on his feet and he's tall enough to pee in the potty. I also have a foldable potty seat from Babies R' Us for when he goes #2 when we are gone. Then he doesn't feel he's going to fall in, but now after a few months he is getting used to sitting on the toilet without it. They kind of learn how to hold themselves up. Good luck!! Pack flushable wipes with too, they are great if you have to clean something up!!

Thanks for all the help. He had another pretty successful day on the potty. I've looked at some folding potty covers but the reviews on them are not great-pinch and slide. Fisher price has a potty to go which is a free standing potty that folds and comes with a bag to carry it in. I'll have to try a few different things. Thanks again!

DH and I can't even imagine teaching DS to stand yet. He's been PT'd since 2.5 years, and still sits on his potty or the toilet. There's plenty of time for him to stand, and just no need at this point (he's 3 and 3 months).

We sit him on the toilet, making sure his pants and underwear are at his ankles, tell him to hold himself (I would use the proper word, but it seems it's a naughty word and gets starred out, sigh) down, and he goes. Only time this doesn't work is on his potty if he's tired, because he doesn't always hold himself down. Oh well. But on toilets it always works!

when my oldest was 3 and he wanted to go standing up he invented his own solutions.

#1 he would fling it over the side and go

or #2 he would climb up and stand on the toilet seat with his feet spread one on each side and pee pointing straight down.

Seriously let them practice going off the back deck and learn aim... then you wont be as timid to let them stand on your feet
