Potty Training @ WDW

My mother tells me that I was fully trained before we took a long trip camping out west. I was 2. She used diapers for most of the trip but said that I quickly gave them up when we returned home.

With my son, he trained within 2 weeks (with advice from DISers!) when he was 2 3/4. We didn't use pull ups. He never really had accidents, except once at night and a couple of times when he didn't want to stop playing & I forgot to remind him. I always made him try to go when we left the house, or anyone's house. Even now he is good with "trying" because we didn't make a big deal about it. You just have to try when you leave, everyone does.

I am waiting to start training DD until we get back from vacation. She will be almost 2. I really don't think she's ready but it will be easier during the summer so I'll try. My niece same age is getting trained at her sitters but at this age it seems like the parents do all the work!

My dd had just turned 3 when we went to Disney last year and she was not trained yet, not for lack of trying on my part, lol! Anyway, while we were there of course she wore pull ups and I just took her to the bathroom with me everytime I went. And do you know that girl never went in her pull up once the whole 9 days of the trip! So when we came back she was fully trained, never had an accident again. Now our family joke is, if you want your kid to be potty trained just take them to Disney! It truely is a magical place, lol! :wizard:

Last trip ds had been trained for about 3 weeks before we went to Disney. I used pull-ups at night, but during the day kept him in underwear and he was fine.

We took many bathroom breaks, but everyone was drinking so much water (went in August!) that we all were hitting the bathrooms often. (He only had one accident - pooped during Wishes - poor thing didn't want to miss anything!!)

I was worried about long lines or being in the parking lot and him having to go (at that time he didn't have great gladder control) so I bought an "On The Go Potty". It folds up and fits in your bag and his bag type liners that absorb everything so you just tie it up and throw it away like you would a diaper. We used it only once on the trip, but I've used it many times at soccer practice and games where there are no bathrooms.

Stick with the underwear and see how things go. Pull-ups do send the wrong message.

Have a great trip!

I think if you have a couple weeks ditch the pull ups completely now and by then should do well. I think the majority of nap time "accidents" in pull ups would be subconciously knowing there is a "diaper" there because that is what pull ups are they are just diapers.

I think they are good in early training to test if toddlers are ready completely to try to train and to teach about pulling them down. I'm using them now on my 20 month old dd to see if she is ready some evenings we let her run without bottoms at all and we are getting an idea of when she pees. Her bms are like clockwork, she has one every morning within 30 minutes of waking. Hasn't had a nighttime BM in long time and stays dry for 1-2 hours during day and sometimes wakes up dry from naps. This weekend I had planned to let her run bare or with cloth training pants on all day and note her schedule. But last night and this morning she seems to have diaherra not all that out of the loops since I just got over it myself. Hopefully next weekend she will be back to normal and we can do a weekend of cloth training pants only.

We are probably gonna go this summer around the time dd turns 2 or right after. We are trying to see if she would catch on more before then. She has gone pee "officially" twice but has gone by timing a few times.

What about those plastic lined cloth training pants? Or a cloth diaper pull on cover over a regular cloth training pants. It would help prevent leaks onto clothes if you don't make it in time. And I think going all the time to the bathroom will help. If she is dry for 2 hours during the day it will be okay if you go to the bathroom every 1 1/2 to 2 hours. If she drinks a lot of fluid go sooner. ;) Another thought would be to cloth diaper if the first day doesn't go as well as planned. Cloth helps the baby feel the wetness and most are very uncomfortable with wet pants on and next time she might decide to ask to go.

We went in May prior to our son turning 3 in June. He had been potty trained for about 1 month. The only problem we had with underwear, was the 3 hour flight down, he fell asleep prior to us getting him to the bathroom on the plane. So he had a little accident. But that was the one and only time. He never did pull ups except at night. I would stick to the underwear and lots of bathroom breaks.

In regard to the on the go potty, I haven't seen that product but we just used a very small, cheap plastic potty chair. Kept it in the back of the van and used zip locs inside (esp good if you can find at dollar store). When the older kids were at soccer, baseball or if we were on a road trip this was a life saver. Just bring some grocery bags, insert the zip lock and when you get to an appropriate place, dispose of it.

To the OP- It sounds like your dd is well on the way but not what I would call potty trained. I reconsider my opinion, I would wait - she is only 2 and average age for girls is 2 1/2 to 3. IMHO there is no need to rush her for a wdw trip. Perhaps use the pull ups with the feel wet liner for the trip, my sil used these for the beginning stage with my nephew. You can keep on with the training, encourage using the potty but have that "backup" in case of accidents. Since she is so early into the training, an accident in public like that could cause a set back. Depending on when the trip is I would continue training but not completely rule out the pull ups if she isn't ready when you go.

Have a great trip.

My ds is 28 mths old. He is very interested in using the "big boy potty" and uses it for both bm and pees. The problem is that he seems to pee every 15-20 minutes. If he is in underwear he will pee whereever he happens to be. He gets very upset and has to immediately go on the potty. My question is this do you think that he is just not ready to train. He has never woke up in the am dry and sometimes actually wets thru is diaper while sleeping. What age is appropriate to train a boy? I am obviously encouraging him to go on the potty whenever he wants to, but it is frustrating.

Babycenter.com and onestepahead.com both have the fold N go pottys.

I plan to get a folding toliet seat the kind that adjust the big potty to the size of toddler potty. I have heard the baby centers have small pottys too I dunno which ones or anything though. I'm getting it at some babymall for $5.99 I think it was they are $12.95 at onestepahead.com though and come with handles for the child to hold on to.

One of the sites I saw had a inflateable potty that inflates quick and uses plastic bags too. I was wanting one of those but last night I put my dd's potty chair on the big seat and she was excited to sit on the "big" potty and sat there for 5 minutes almost which is longer than she will do on her potty these days.

I have potty trained 2 boys successfully. We trained ds#1 at aboyt 1.5 months before he turned 3, it took 3 days, that is it 3 days. Night time he wore pull-ups for 1 month. Done. DS#2, I tried at the sametime, 1.5 months before he turned 3, but when I told him it was his last diaper, he turned to me and said, "Well then don't throw it away!" All I could see was constipation... BTW, we began when they were both dry through the night for at least 2-3 nights in a row. So with him saying that, I waited another 2-3 weeks and tried again. It took him 5 days, that is it 5 days. Nights were the same pull up for about 1 month. Now we have ds#3, who shows signs of interest, he will be 3 on the 22nd of July. I have tried 3x to train him, no success, after changing him 4x in one day from accidents, I put him back in the diaper. So I will wait again until around 1.5 months before he turns 3.
If I were you I would wait a little more. Also, we never did pull ups during the day, straight to underwear. Good luck.

To add to this, you can put a maxi-pad in the bottom of the bag to absorb liquid, which helps if you can't dispose of the bag right away!

I was telling DD2 daycare provider about our trip this morning. She asked if I would be putting her back in pull-ups. She has been in big girl underwear since December except for naps, nighttimes, and long outings. She has been doing so well staying dry and asking to use the potty. I know I have to use pull ups for the trip but I am worried about what that will do to her progress when we return. Has anyone experienced this?

Our son will be younger than your daughter during our next trip. Currently we are 100% for poops and about 50-75% for pees and I've wondered what we will do when the time comes to test his potty skills in WDW. We have special trainers that were custom-made to be like underwear but they do have a thin layer of absorbency in the crotch. They are pull-up types but also snap open on the sides if necessary. Perhaps you could have some of these cloth trainers made? My guess is she will not enjoy being back in "diapers" (even the pull-ups) if they are the disposable kind...either because she wants to use the potty or will be offended at being treated like a "baby" (you know how kids are, very sensitive to that!)... We tested him at DTD 2 months ago and he was dry for 8 hours despite the excitement at RFC, shops, etc. :cheer2:

Sounds just like my DS at that age. He was very interested, but really just didn't have any control yet, and it started to really frustrate him and cause a lot of tantrums. I put him back in diapers for about 6 more months, and tried again. It actually took him about 2 months to be completely trained in the day. He still has accidents on about 50% of the nights, even wetting through the pull up sometimes, though he is trying. Some kids just lose control at night. (DH had trouble till he was about 10, so hopefully that is not hereditary!) He has a goal of staying dry every night for a week to earn an Incredibles flashlight that he saw at 7-11 (which I need to go buy and hide before they don't have them anymore), and he is very proud of himself when he has stayed dry, but I really think that the accidents at night are out of his control.

Thanks for everyones input. He is my third ds. ds1 was fully trained by 2 3/4. Ds2 was over 3 before he was trained. Both trained very easily within a day or two when they were ready. DS3 sees everyone else being a big boy, but just doesn't have the control yet. Since he removes his diaper every time he wets I will continue to work with him and when he is ready we will get away from the diapers. For now I'm just glad that he will use the big boy potty. We have friends that have a ds that is well over 3 yrs old and he absolutely refuses to use the potty at all. They don't know what to do with him. I'd rather have them interested early than not at all. Their little boy is also the third child so you just never know.
