Potty Training help?

You'll get there! We all eventually do!:yay: Have you tried the quilted underwear? As I said in my last message it's what gave us a breakthrough!:thumbsup2 Best of luck to you!!!!:wizard:

We are in the exact same predicament with my son and pre-school next year. He's my third (he has on older brother and sister) and with the others I did the cold turkey thing with the big kid underwear and it worked fine.

With him, no dice. He just takes off his big boy underwear and wont wear them. He keeps telling me in "two weeks" he'll start. I have no idea where that came from but two weeks has come and gone!! LOL. Now he said "6 weeks" and he'll go in the potty. Where does he get this stuff???

Anyway, should I just let him go naked when we are home? I'm a SAHM so it wouldn't be a big deal I guess. I dont know...Any advice???

I bought the Gerber training pants at Target. I plan to try them on DS when it gets a little warmer and we can hang out outside with him in his training pants! He all of a sudden decided to stop sucking his thumb this week, so maybe decided to go on the potty will be the next step toward big-boyhood! We'll see!! Funny thing, I didn't care if he sucked his thumb forever, I never said a word about it. I'm trying to pretend I don't care about the potty either, now! Maybe that will work!

I am so glad that someone posted this as I am in this same dilemma now. My DS is almost 4 (June) and he still wont consistently go on his own unless we are at my Granny's (I think it is the mirrors in her bathroom). He does well at daycare, but at home he will not stop what he is doing to go and will not poop on the pot at all. He has even gone so far as to poop and dump the poop in the toilet.

I am at the end of my rope and the only thing left is prayer. His pediatrician doesn't seem worried, but I am losing my mind!

Boy do I know how you feel. My DS will be four in early May. Pretty much got the pee thing down. He'll even just go without saying anything. But poop...oh my goodness. Most days, it's a fight. He can sit on the toilet forever, screaming his head off but won't go. Get him off the toilet he goes. In his big boy underwear, I might add.

Today was a good day, though. I noticed he had a little in his pants and made him get on the toilet. Reminded him that if he wants to go to WDW in June, he has to poop on the toilet. Not even 5 minutes later he had done it on the toilet. Yippee. He was so proud of himself, and I was too.:yay: :yay: :yay:

When my dd was at that age, she was the same way so what I started doing was setting an alarm we started at 30 min. every time it went off she would have to stop and go potty if she had to or not, after awhile we upped the time to every 40 min. and so on, eventually she would go potty when she needed to and the timer went away

Hi everyone,

Don't know if anyone is still subscribed here, but I just wanted to give an update, since it's July, and that was our fateful deciding month.

Well, DH was off for a week, and gave the ole college try. DS seemed to be doing well. We went with the "there are no more diapies" approach. There were still lots of accidents. Towards the end of the week, DS interest was fading, when I had an idea.

I thought, let's try a sticker chart and potty prize box, like so many had mentioned before. I knew DS knew what to do, he just lacked in the proper motivation. Well, throw some toys/puzzles/books/fun stuff as an incentive, and that boy was ready to go!:lmao:

It worked like a charm!

Here's some pics...

and here's how it works.

DS gets 1 sticker for pees, 2 stickers for poops. When he gets 10 ten stickers, he gets to pick a prize from the box, then we start all over. This way, he gets a prize every 1-2 days, which is quite managable. The best part? I put together that prize box for under $20 and there's a ton of stuff in it! Thank you, Dollar Tree and WalMart!:goodvibes

It's worked very, very well. The first couple of days there were some accidents, but he really got the hang of doing it on his own to get a sticker, and for the most part, will even run to the bathroom when he knows he needs to poop, which was our hardest hurdle to overcome. He's had some accidents, but is basically potty trained. And I feel totally comfortable sending him to preschool this fall.

Mission Completion, as the Einsteins would say! I know we have more work ahead of us, but I am so thrilled that he'll be able to go to preschool, and to take our very first Disney vacation without diapers. :woohoo:

Congrats!!! to you all! Success is so sweet. :cool1: :woohoo: I have to say though that I was somewhat concerned. When I read your post on my email alert the pics only came through as links, not actual pics. I was almost afraid to click them, wondering just *what* you had included pics of on a thread about potty training! :rotfl2:

A tip about that upcoming trip...don't forget to take the extra clothes along. Especially with recently diaper-liberated kids, but really with ALL kids, it's good to have a spare pair for "just in case." And by that I don't just refer to potty accidents. "Just in case" applies to an unexpected adventure in a water playground (not much is sadder than a child in a water playground being told to stay dry), a sand box, a mud puddle, an unexpected "gift" from a flying bird, an unfortunate slip, etc...

My boys range from 10-20 and I still keep extra clothes and towels in the van nearly at all times. Better to be prepared...

Oh goodness! :lmao:

That's just too gross!!!!:lmao:

No, I was proud of my creativity, and wanted to share.:goodvibes

Oh, thank you for the tip. I actually learned that lesson the hard way on one of our trips to Disney when DS was about 1.5. We ran through the outfit he was wearing, the one spare, and his jams in about a span of a couple of hours. Which then caused me to have to walk all the way around Epcot from Italy to Mouse Gears back to Italy (we were having dinner, of course) to get something clean that would fit.

Thus began the TWO outfit, plus pajamas rule.:lmao:

Also, this trip I plan on bringing laundry detergent and possible doing some washing while we're down there.

Thanks.:goodvibes

Congratulations!! My son has mastered pee and this week we have gotten closer on the poop thing. I made up a chart, too, although I'm thinking I like yours even better. Great job! I think I'll have mine PT by fall for preschool, too!! Yippee!!!:cool1:

That is terrific! I am so glad the incentives worked for you and your son!

We are half-way there. I am really hoping to have it licked by their birthday in November, which would mean we would have it down pat for the trip in December!

Stickers were not successful for my guys. Right now they get a mini-peanut butter cup if they poop in the potty and two little guys are in underwear all day long. The other two-Jack and Ella-will not be persuaded by threat or treat to use the bathroom. Ella never wets herself, but will NOT poop. No way. No how. Jack can't be bothered to stop and go to the bathroom.

So we still keep the White Cloud pull-ups in business. We are down to just one changing table and one diaper pail. That is good.

Someday.

Congratulations! Isn't it amazing to come back to this thread and see where we're all at?:goodvibes

Wow. I would think considering you have four little peanuts running around that being down to one changing table and one diaper pail is a HUGE accomplishment, so I say kudos to you!:goodvibes

I can't imagine having to deal with four little personalities all at once in regard to potty training. It's hard enough with one, so I understand the stubborn don't want to stop with Jack. My DS was just like that.

And I'm a firm believer in them being ready. I think the reason it all clicked is not just because of the prize chart, but because he was actually ready to let go. And that's a huge step.:thumbsup2

Congrats!!!!:cool1:  :cool1:
To be honest- Imight have to come and use your potty! Your prizes look so good!:cutie: (kidding of course- about using the potty- the prizes and chart look great!)

I was joking with some DISers the other day and casually asked if anyone thought if I made a potty prize box for Southwest airlines it would get them to lower airfare in September...worth a try, right?:lmao:

When my dd ws 2.5 we just took away the diapers and pull-ups. We put her in underwear expecting accidents (we had the carpet cleaner ready). The first day she had a ton of accidents, but towards the end of the day she started making the connection and saying she had to go potty as she was going in her pants. The second morning started out similar to day one's afternoon of her saying she had to go potty as she was going, but by the afternoon she was making it to the potty. By day 3 she was trained!! We did the same with her nightime diapers just before she turned 3. We just took them away and left her in her underwear. We limited her drinks after dinner, had her go potty before bed, and she rarely has an accident. I think she's had two since we've done that, and that was back in March/April.
Anyway, my suggestion is to get rid of the diapers and pullups and just let him figure it out.

OOps, sorry, jumped ahead and didn't read the ending! Congrats on the potty training! Glad to hear it worked!!

Thank you! We still do have some accidents, but we make a point of telling him, nicely, that there's no stickers for those, and not to go in his pants.:thumbsup2

Thanks for sharing! What a great idea. We just got a sticker picture that my DD get to put a sticker in place each time she uses the potty, but I might give your idea a try too!

Happy to help! That's why I posted those pics, I thought if this works for someone else, then all the better.:goodvibes

Oh lordy, I showed my DD the sticker picture and now she asking to sit on the potty all the time  it is going to be a long day!

Do your kids always insist on taking their underwear all the way off before going to the potty?

Yes, he did at first. We had to sort of train him that it was okay to not pull them down all the way.

Don't worry, one step at a time. Our hard part is getting him to dress himself. Some shorts are just harder to pull up than others, kwim? And also, if he does take his undies all the way off, he has a very hard time getting them back on alone.
