Potty Training help?

Do you know how much I love pull-ups?:lovestruc :lovestruc

I love that even if the little guys aren't ready to be dry, they can practice pulling them down, sitting on the potty, and pulling them up. They can practice with jeans!!!

That being said, I am thinking we need to 'graduate' to big boy and girl undies soon. I am just waiting for a sign from God to tell me that THIS is the moment that they are ready for the undies! Don't know what that sign is, maybe one of the kidlets announcing that they are READY would work!

Another day in the potty grind. I think we will attempt being out all morning. I have done it before for an hour or two at a time, but today we might even make a longer trip and include lunch. Crazy. I know.:dance3:

Wish us luck! And Good Luck TarzanKat on your last day home. Hope it works!!!:)

Did you actually end up going back to pull ups?

Oh yes. We went back to pull-ups and/or diapers (I only made it about a day in undies, though. I couldn't take it!) Although DS didn't seem very attached to his underwear anyway. Maybe you could try some of those cotton absorbent training pants UNDER the diego underwear? So the mess wouldn't be so messy? Or rubber pants on top of the Diegos? Those seem so hot and gross, but maybe they would be annoying enough that you son wouldn't like them and would be motivated byt that to use the potty! (keep 'em dry and soon you won't have to wear the pants on top!) I bought some of the cotton training pants at Target the otger day, for when I get brave enough to try them again! Good luck to you, whatever you decide. Good for you for trying so hard and sticking with it as long as you have!

We were in a store one day and I brought her to the panty section and she pointed to these Winnie the Pooh panties. While she was holding them this woman (very grandmotherly) saw her looking at them and says to her. Wow, are you really ready to start wearing big girl underwear? And my youngest looks at her and says, "Yes, I am a big girl!" She wore them starting that day with few accidents. I think she did this because she wanted to do it (finally). I don't know why the panties I previously bought didn't work or why the big girl words I gave her didn't work or even why the months of pushing her toward this didn't work. For some reason those words from a perfect stranger really changed something in her mind.

I think the outside influence can work wonders. Our DS was "trained" for his daycare provider but would not poop for anyone and would often pee in his pants for his parents. :laundy: Finally, on an unrelated doctor's visit, I mentioned it to his pediatrician. The doctor had a "man to man" discussion with my then 3 year old son and it did the trick. After dinner, my son announced he needed to poop, headed upstairs and did. Afterwards, he was talking to himself and we overheard him say, "doctor told me to poop." I had been struggling with him for a year!:cheer2:

I get a kick out of the "man to man" talk with doctor. If only something like that could work for my little nut!

Today I have gone back to pull-ups and ordered another case from Amazon. I was trying to avoid it, but I am not going to be able to keep up the consistency while he's at my mother's, and since she suggested going back, I know that's what she wants. We have gone to the bathroom consistently this morning, and no accidents yet. I think the pull up is a barrier for my piece of mind. DS had no issues about not wearing underwear, truthfully I don't think he cares at all. Which also indicates to me he's just not ready yet.

So thanks for all your kind words, and I'll keep you posted. :thumbsup2

HerdOHuds, a little :wizard: if you decide to take them out. :)

we have been potty training our daughter who is now 2 1.2 yrs . since jan ....she first started on the potty then i brought her a toilet set which she much prefers to the potty....after using the potty for a couple of weeks she was doing fine we were rewarding her with stickers which she stuck all around the house lol

now though she will go to pee but not poop which is very strange so when i know she needs to go i do stick a napppy back on her otherwise she tends to hold on then makes herself contispated (sp)
and even going shopping she now asks to go big toilet so we have mastered the wee side of it
i would just be very patient with your son he will click when he is ready

Okay, so today we've been in pull ups all day. No accidents! :lmao:

I don't count pooping in his diaper as an accident since I saw him doing it, tried to get him to go on the potty, and he refused. That to me is not an accident, it's a willfull power struggle. I chose to let it slide.

I haven't really been watching the clock like a hawk like the other days, just watching when he drinks and saying, okay let's go. So far, we're in the same pull up since pooping this morning. He's down for his nap now, so I'll have to see if he's dry upon waking. Some days yes, some days no. Taking cleaning up out of the equation just makes me less high stress, which I'm sure translates to him as well. Happy mommy = happy kid.

So that's my update so far...I'll keep you posted. :)

We had another successful day today. A couple times cleanup was needed, but I don't count those as accidents. The first was DS was taking his diaper off this morning to go sit on the toilet and just didn't make it in time. The diaper was on the floor right by the toilet, with a puddle next to it. (Yet again I was changing the baby's diaper when this happened.) The other time we were at MIL's house and I told DS to sit on the toilet. He did, but because a certain part was facing up, not down, his underpants and shirt got wet and had to be changed.

But then we went on a long car ride - about 2 hours in the car - and DS stayed dry the whole time even though he had a big cup of milk right before we left. He made a comment to me today which I think is part of his motivation. He said he can "go to the kids club now." (I've told him about the Oceaneer Club with Mickey Mouse but that he can only go there when we cruise this summer if he wears underpants and keeps them clean and dry.)

Ok - DD will be three on 4/22. I am determined that she will not celebrate her bithday in pullups - she however could care less. She is finally peeing on the potty but has yet to poop. I have been putting her in panties during the day and she typically has one or two accidents - usually when running for the potty. SO I guess things are improving. She poops around the same time everyday, but not on the potty. She actually asks me to put a diaper/pullup on her so she can go - this is if I catch her "assuming the position". Then there are days that she refusing to use the potty at all. I am at a loss. I feel like it is my fault because I work and am not around during the day to work with her on this. She stays with my Mom who is trying, but she also has my four year old and 5 month old nephews to watch.

I feel your pain! I work part time and lament the days I am not home. My mom watches my DS, but works from home, so to ask her to be cleaning up beaucoup messes during the day is just not feasible. All I can say is don't worry, it will come with time. DS had a great day yesterday, only pooped in his diaper. Today a couple accidents, but he is still improving. Here's some :wizard: waving of the wands for you, and good luck!:thumbsup2

Congrats on your successes! It's wonderful to hear. :)

Thanks. We had 6 accident-free days in a row. But today was another story. DS's teacher told me he tried several times to go but nothing happend, then between music and lunch he had an accident. It had been hours since his last success so it's not surprising. But then he had another accident at home and the only reason I can think of is he was too tired to listen to the signals from his body. (So I got him cleaned up and in a diaper, let him play for a few minutes, and now he's in bed sleeping.) As my sister put it, "Six steps forward, one step back. Not bad at all."

We have DS pee'ing sitting down. But I think his teacher is going to take him in the bathroom with some of the other boys next week to let him see how to do it standing up at the urinal. Don't know if this will help or not. But it can't hurt to expose him to it, right?

Alright, one bad day, they're bound to happen. The 6 accident free days!   That's awesome! Today my DS, not so good. I think mom is not really on top of doing it like I am, and I really want to get this kid trained. It drives me nuts when we're not on the same page. So I know one of his diapers was wet during the day, and after his nap he pooped in his diaper. :scared1: Well, like I just said to you, there will be bad days. Keep on trucking! :thumbsup2

Hi, I just read the first page of the thread and I am no expert on potty training ( I only did it once myself  many years ago) and my 4 kids did it each themselves once. But since I was there to witness the big event 4 times, here is what I noticed. As my kids approached 2.5 to 3 yrs, they could pee in the potty occasionally. (My littlest DD would pee on the potty at 23 months. I wouldn't let her train until she was three. I kept putting her off saying, wait till you are three. Well, the day after her birthday she came to me with undies in hand and that was it. She put them on and off she went!)They learned the steps. Like you said, your son has the mechanics down....I mean he has done it. Great! Thats the first step. And you have pretty much done your part of the potty training. The second part, is pretty much up to him. Frustrating, I know, for adults with school looming in the distance. The good news is however......if he decides to potty train....it won't take a month, a week or even a day. It is a decision that the child makes and bam....its done. Its kinda like waiting for a loose tooth to fall out. It wiggles and wiggles than one moment, bam, its out.

One other thought. If your son doesnt like being interupted to go to the bathroom, perhaps you could have him practice "being interupted". Get him used to stopping what he is doing, leave the room for a minute ( I dont know, maybe have him practice washing his hands or picking out an outfit for the next day...whatever), then have him return after a minute or two to his original activity. I would do this a couple of times a day everyday.

Hmmmmm, one other thought. Keep diapers for baby's, pull-ups for kids who aren't quite ready to potty train or who are sleeping, and underwear for those who have made the decision to be potty trained. This one mom at preschool keeps mixing her poor daughter up by sending her to school in diapers one day and pullups another and maybe underwear in there somewhere too. Even the teachers are confused. Once you go to underwear do not go back to diapers. Use pullups for naps and nighttime till the brain is used to going to the potty and will wake the child up to go.

And that's pretty much all I know about potty training. :rolleyes1 Keep us posted on how things are working out! :cheer2: :flower3:

Thanks for the info, pp! Alright, potty training friends! How goes it? :goodvibes

Hey Tazanskat!
We went the entire week at daycare in quilted training underwear with NO accidents!!!!!:cool1:  :cool1:

He has had several at home, but none at daycare!!!!! I think we are over the hump and well on our way to being potty-trained!!!:worship:

I now have hope that he will be completely potty-trained by the time we go to WDW in June!:hourglass Guess I'll be buying the MM underwear we promised this weekend!!!!:smickey:

Have you had any successes this week? I sure hope so!!! Have a great weekend and good luck!!!!:wizard:

Here's a little pixie dust for luck!!!!pixiedust:

Awesome, katybugsmom! Glad to hear about your success! :goodvibes

We have been making progress...however slow but steady, it's progress. All poops still in the diaper. Pees on the potty if he's reminded to go, and starting to stay dry much longer during the day. Let me tell you less pull ups bought=happy Tarzanskat. ;)

Our biggest struggles are waking up in the morning and going first thing, and waking up from his nap and going first thing. DS takes after my childhood days and is not the best "waker-upper". It takes him time to feel acclimated to being awake and the last thing he wants do to when he first opens those peepers is run to the bathroom. Ah well...all in good time. :)

We had our major breakthrough last week during our Easter vacation. My husband and I are both in education, so we had the week off together.
When we switched from pull-ups to quilted underwear it made all the difference in the world!!! I don't care what the companies say about their pull-ups(cool-alert, etc...) there's nothing like a real pair of quilted underwear -it got the point across with my son. We started wearing them last week and as I said before he had no accidents at daycare this week. It was hard to find them(Super Walmarts and Target carry the Gerber brand), but I had a friend that still had the ones she used to train her son, who is in my 4K class this year, and they were still in great shape. If you haven't tried them you might want to-you may get results like me!!!:yay:

Good luck to you!!!:wizard:

So what exactly would I be looking for? I have some time off coming up in May where I'll have another solid week to focus on training. If they're by Gerber, at Walmart are they in the baby section? Thanks mucho! :thumbsup2

I think they're called Gerber Training Pants. You will find them in the infant/toddler section with undershirts, onsies, etc...
They have white, or prints-some for boys and some for girls. The sizes I have been able to find are 2T, 3T, 4T. In the same section you can find the plastic training pants that fit over the quilted. Be careful though with warm weather approaching-the plastic pants can cause a bad case of diaper rash. I found the quilted training pants are enough-even when my DS wet the training pants and his own pants-usually sweatpants caught most of it-I never had to change his shoes.
You really have to look for the packages-for some reason it just doesn't jump out at you-maybe because all things Gerber are packaged the same.:confused3
I hope they help you as much as they helped me!!! Good luck!:thumbsup2

We haven't had an accident-free day in over a week. :confused3 DS starts off the day great, but at some point during the day he always seems to wet his pants. The other night I think it was my fault because I said something that upset him and he just shut down. To top it off, we were at a restaurant so there was a big ole puddle under the table. Today we almost had success, but right before bedtime - I mean minutes before heading to his room to change - it happened. Oh well, tomorrow is another day.
