Potty Training help?

You know I am being hardcore 'Potty Mama' today and offered the big bribe to all 4 kids and it has been moderately successful. If I can just keep it together for a whole week, I think that at least 3 of the 4 would get it.

The roughest part right now is that my parents, who live nearby, can't seem to get on board. I took 2 boys to speech this morning and dropped the last two off at my mom's house and I got the pursed lipped frown from my mother when I explained that they couldn't get a reward for just using the potty. They had to keep their pants dry too. Geez! How exactly did she think THAT would work??!! The whole point of dry underwear in my world is 1) less cost in diapers/pull-ups and 2) less laundry!!!

Outside of many trips to WDW with family, my second wish to spend my mythical lottery money would be to have someone else do the dang laundry!!!!:woohoo:

I am offering you some pixiedust: ...there laundry done! :rotfl2:
If only I could make it that easy for you? You know, at the time, I didn't remember your name, but was talking to DH about training DS the other night and said you know, there's a DISer who's trying to train 4 at once! :scared1:

I real feel for and admire you!

I have been laying off a little bit in anticipation of our big 5 day hoopla. This morning I had him go before he could watch Playhouse Disney and he's very adept at it. I think we'll be okay during the 5 day stretch, just keep your fingers crossed for me. I also need to get big boy underwear. I have some Nemo ones in a size 4 but something tells me three pair just won't cut it!

I feel for you with getting the parents on board. It can be very hard and I too have received a raised eyebrow over certain things. Alas, we do our best.

Currently DS is wearing size 4 in pampers easy ups, but I'm pretty sure he's ready for size 5. Do you think the 3t-4t would accomodate?

Oh yes, easily. The 2t-3t are actually a great fit for my DS & I can't see him outgrowing them anytime soon. Just to be on the safe side, try a small pack of the 3t-4t & if they're too roomy, go down a size & save the rest for a growth spurt! Good luck!

Thanks for the help. We've actually been having a very successful day here. All pees on the potty, no pooping yet. He has zero desire to poop on the potty so I know I'm going to have to run. Of course, all this will probably go out the window at my mother's tomorrow, but I feel like it's a little precursor for my five day hoopla. Wish me luck! :thumbsup2

That's great news! I might try and tackle the underwear thing this weekend. I have a five day stretch at home with him, so maybe I should go for it. Of course, we're visiting family for Easter stuff over the weekend and I might wimp out on the underwear for the 1.5 hour car ride! I don't want a pee-covered car seat to "dampen" our weekend!

BTW, my mom is always after me TO potty train my DS. I say, if she wants to do it, go for it! She isn't quite that motivated, though. She just wants to bug me about it!

Yesterday wasn't the greatest for us. DS had several accidents - at the grocery store, at the sushi restaurant, at home. But in the evening DH was outside grilling some burgers and sent DS in to wash his hands. I was in the other room changing the baby's diaper and when I came out I heard the bathroom door close. When I opened it DS was sitting on the toilet - in the dark :rotfl: . He said he had to pee. :cool1: Hurray for little victories.

With successes, we will have accidents...keep truckin'!:thumbsup2

My poor DS....every time he's looked like he's had to poop today (it's very obvious, he runs to the same corner of the house) I picked him up and ran him to the potty. He did not want to do it! He still hasn't pooped! :scared1: I think I have scard the poor thing, but I'm just starting to put my foot down. I don't keep fruit snacks in the house anymore because he'd turned into a little addict. I offered to buy him some if he would just poop. He said he would, and didn't. :lmao:

Anyway, we've had one instance today where I noticed the pull up was wet. Other than that, we've used the potty all day, so here's hoping. :)

Where do you get these? Do they need to have rubber pants over them? I hate the idea of rubber pants, but I also hate the idea of pee on my couch!! :scared:

I've found Gerber brand cotton training pants at Target in the baby section (by onsies & undershirts). The ones I like best though are from JC Penny's. They seem to be the most absorbant. I found those in the toddler section near undershirts and socks. HTH's!:)

Just passing on another great idea I got from someone else on the Disboards - have your little one wear regular underwear (the thin kind) and then a pull-up over it. That way, if he has an accident, he will feel the "wet" sensation, but you won't be stuck with a wet carseat! Also, I have a handtowel in the seat of my DDs' carseats - just in case there is an accident on one of out shorter trips.

party: :goodvibes **Eeyore** Thanks for doin the laundry!

We are doing okay. I had another guy be successful with a dry pull-up and pee in the pot, but the one guy that I thought had it back last fall (had to stop because he was withholding the #2 for weeks!!!:scared1: ) is just not doing it now. He has discovered that he would just rather play.

Ella is a champ, though. She gets it, wants to do it, and stays on top of it all day. Only one wet pull-up for that little cutie!:lovestruc

Here's to dry undies!!!!!!party:

Well DS finally pooped at night yesterday, totally out of his normal routine, and it was, in the diaper....ah well. Most of the pees were on the potty yesterday, so I'll take my small successes. I'm going to get him some big boy underwear today, hopefully in fun characters he'll like in anticipation of the hoop-la. Well ladies, I'm off to work for a couple of days! I'll keep you posted, and good luck to you! :thumbsup2

The last few days have not been good around here. DS just refuses to tell me when he has to go. I've been having him sit on the toilet about every hour and a half - just like they do at school - but we've still had one accident after another. The kicker today, I was getting ready to change DS out of his swim suit after his lesson and he just stood there and pee'd all over the floor. That was after an accident with his grandmother this morning at the mall and another at home while I was changing the baby's diaper.

I just don't know what to do to get through to DS. He knows what he's supposed to do; he does it at school. But he keeps telling me he "doesn't want to be a big boy". So do I put him back in diapers like HE wants or do I continue to put him in underpants even though I know he's going to ignore his body's signals because he wants to be a baby just like his sister.

ACK!!!!!

DS 3 is perfectly capable, does it every night before his bath.

Also, I have tried rewards (worked for a day, after didn't care), telling him if he does it he can go to school, etc...he just does not seem interested. :scared:

I have the opposite problem. Russ just turned three and really, really WANTS to use the potty. He sits on it with us, he sits on it at daycare (two hours, two days a week), but he can't make the pee come out. :( We have a reward that he talks about all the time (I go pee and I get the super fast cars!) I've tried unders for several days now, but he'll start to pee, stop, beg me to go to the potty, we run over....and nothing. I haven't identified a pee face/actions yet to help him catch it before he starts. I tried running water, dipping his hand in water, flicking water on his weewee... Nothing works so far. I feel bad because he's getting frustrated and I don't want him to stop trying, but I don't know how to help him!

Let me start by saying I feel for the last two posters. Boy, did I have no clue how hard potty training would be when I was taking care of my little baby 3 years ago!

That being said I have a somewhat light-hearted and sad, but funny moment for you. Yesterday I was in Walmart to purchase big boy undies, and I about had a nervous breakdown. For the first time, I had to walk to the big boy side and not the baby side to buy his clothes. When I got back to my mother's to pick him up, I broke down and cried because I had to "buy him big boy underwear." :sad1: Yes ladies, although I know he's three, he's still my little baby.

Oy! So, now that I have come to a realization that indeed my son is growing up, let me also say that ladies and gents, tomorrow begins the five day potty training hoopla!

Tonight, I showed DS his new Diego undies (very into Diego right now) and told him that we need to wash them to wear tomorrow. He was very excited, he likes to help do the wash by throwing the clothes into the machine. So he helped throw them in and the soap. I'm hoping this will give him a feeling of ownership, like these are my Diego undies. So I'll keep you posted, and keep your fingers crossed for me...tomorrow morning...we begin! :scared1:

:cheer2: Good luck and many hugs to both of you!:cheer2:

We actually had a pretty good day today. It was nearly an accident-free day. DS pee'd in the toilet before we left the eye doctor's office, then again at the drop-off child care he likes to go to when I take DD to her Little Gym class. The accident happened when DS went into the bathroom to sit on the toilet as I asked, but instead actually getting on the toilet he decided to play with the door. But it wasn't all bad, he then sat and pooped. (I know, TMI!)

I probably shouldn't do this, but I still put DS in a diaper for his siesta. And today, knowing I was going to be on my own when we went out this evening, I let DS stay in a diaper afterwards too. (I don't think I could have managed by myself if he'd had an accident where we went since I had the baby, too.)

Just thought I would pop in and bring a little update for my DD. So after she declared that she was NOT a baby and went 3 days without an accident, she said she was "done". :confused3 "I want my diaper. I done going potty". :rotfl: Too much work I guess. But I still put her in panties and went through about 3-4 days of tantrums and accidents:laundy: , but then yesterday she started being happy about it again and has even stayed dry during naps and at night. Today she disappeared for a minute, so I went to see where she went and she was sitting on the toilet doing her business on her own (both #1 and #2). That ended up being the trend for the day. :yay: Well, I guess I will see how tomorrow goes.

ok. I have read all the posts and i im in total confusion LOL

I have a son that turned 2 in Feb.

What toilet do i get?
Can I train in the big toilet?

You can use the big toilet or get a little potty. I have two little potties and a potty seat for the big potty and my son doesn't want to use any of them!! :rotfl: We have this seat and it seems to be really good for the big potty. I know at daycare, they just put them on the big toilet right away. Sometimes, they have the boys sit backwards (facing the tank) to keep the pee in the pot!

Alright, DS is down for his nap so I have time for a quick :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

This morning we put on our Diegos. This is how he refers to undies. He was not too thrilled, but I explained again about being a big boy and that we don't pee or poop on Diego, we do it in the toilet. I know it seems basic, but I feel like I need to spell it out. I'm happy to report that we have had no accidents, and he actually pooped on the toilet! He did not want to, but I knew if I didn't have him sit there and try, he would never do it. In this sense, I felt like mean mommy. I was very calm, and spoke to him in an even tone, and just explained it all to him again. He cried and cried to get off. Then I thought of the magic word. I don't know what it is for you, but in my house, it's chocolate. I recently threw out all our candy (he gets plenty when he sees his grandparents) but I kept some mini m&ms just in case. Well, once I said that, the motivation was there and he pooped. I was so proud of him, I almost cried. I know, very sappy. ;)

For his nap I do have him in an overnight diaper. I am not ready to try to go through nap and night time training in addition to day. My goal is to get him to the point where he's ready for preschool. I know it's only the first day, but I'm staying positive and hoping for the best. Wish me luck! :thumbsup2

Alright, we had our first accident. Just in case any of you are having this trouble, my DS needs to be asked every hour to go. I thought I'd try to push a little longer, but as soon as we went past that hour mark, he couldn't make it to the bathroom in time. I guess we'll be working on recognition later. Overall still a good day! :)

We seem to have good days and bad days here. Yesterday was a great day, with only one accident but at the same time a poop in the toilet. Today was full of accidents - by the laundry door, outside the garage, in the den - but then he pee'd in his little toilet before bathtime. We cheer :cheer2: for any success we get. And whenever DS has an accident we remind him that he's supposed to go on the toilet not in his pants.

It just gets so frustrating when you know they know what to do because they've done it before and yet they don't. Well tomorrow is another day, maybe an accident-free day.
