I would love to make a vid like this:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLOJ9HMkgAE

or this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V12zl-Bk6Yc&feature=related

but how do you get the rights to use the music?

I posted a vid awhile back where I just took still photos and put them to music. It took me 4 hours to match up the pictures with the words in the song. (it was my first attempt to do anything like that; I'm sure someone experienced could have done it quicker). Anyway, YouTube said the song I used was copyrighted and muted my video. They suggested some other songs I could replace the soundtrack with, but none of them even remotely matched the photos, so I've just left it silent.

I truly didn't mean to do anything wrong, and I definitely don't want to repeat my mistake.

So does anyone know where to find songs that are legal to use for vids like these? I showed them to my kids and they want to do one of our Christmas trip to visit family! I think it would be a HOOT! But I don't want to go to all that work and then not be able to post it. :guilty:

Shameless bump for the night crowd. :yay:

My kids are picking songs for a vid for us right now! How can I know what's "safe" to use?

I think it depends on the music publishers. Some don't allow their music on You Tube.

As for knowing what songs are allowed, the only thing I can think of is to search for the song you want to use in You Tube. If it's there, and it has been featured for a while, you are probably safe.

Good luck with your future efforts!

hmmm weird cause I have seen plenty of slideshows set to popular songs on youtube

Exactly!! That's why it never occurred to me that it was wrong. :guilty:

Apparently, if you do it three times, they can delete your account  which is why I want to be so careful not to do it again.

The song I used was "Time of your Life" by Green Day, and I just searched for it on YouTube and got over 11,000 matches. One is actually a vid of Green Day in concert performing the song (almost 2 million hits) and another is the actual music video (with a disclaimer that the content is copyrighted) and many others are covers with other artists performing the song, but if it's the same music and lyrics, does it matter who's singing it?

The songs we are thinking of using for vacation videos are on YouTube now too, in their original form. Maybe I will contact YouTube about it (but certainly not mention the vids I linked in my OP) and see if they have a list of approved songs or something.

I put some Bob Marley on a vacation video and it got zapped. I tried to alter the song a bit and they still zapped it. I'll have to find another song at some point.

That doesn't make any sense  why allow it for some, and not others?

That's the best approach, I think. Maybe this bump will get an explanation from someone who knows. If you get a reply from YT, please share, because now it's seems like they have no rhyme or reason as for what stays or goes.

My guess on the part I bolded is that they delete 'em when they find 'em.

There are millions and millions of vids on YouTube, so I can only imagine that they can't review each and every one in a timely manner.

That's why I don't want to point out (to YouTube) the Disney vids I love - they obviously took a LOT of work and I really enjoy watching them. I would be sad if they were gone.

I have no idea if I can pull something like that off myself, but if I go to all the trouble to video my kids lip-synching lyrics while we're on vacation, and then editing it all together when we get back, I sure as heck don't want it to be something I can't even post. I don't know how else to share videos except on YouTube, although I realize there must be other vid hosting sites out there.

I'll post YouTube's reply here when (if) I get one! :thumbsup2
