Post Racial President?

Uhmmm. . .I just gotta ask this. . .is it actually possible that some of the PP haven't heard this saying before?

It's been a saying for just about forever. . .

I personally haven't heard it said since the 70s! When we stopped calling Asians "yellow people" and Native Americans/Indians "red people"

Throwing something like that saying in your "prayer" is like a throw back in the 60s/70s. I would like to think we are better racially now then back then!

I thought this day was all about looking AHEAD.

Those words were straight from the Civil Rights movement, and I thought it moving for Lowery to use them even if they are dated and inappropriate from our contemporary perspective. The opening lines about "God of our years, God of our tears" were from a very popular Civil Rights era song that I imagine had special meaning for many in attendance today.

Genuinely sorry that some people took offense, but I think think they were directed to a more particular set of individuals for whom they would have meaning and not just sound like a bunch of odd phrases from an old man. Today came full circle for so many.

That's exactly what she wanted you to do.......thinking that Obama said that in his speech....

Shelley, I am assuming that those who heard Obama's inauguration, would have clearly heard the benediction. Didn't you hear it?

I didn't give the benediction. Ask Joseph Lowry why he didn't wait a day.

Where in your OP did you reference Lowery Dawn?

I only saw you reference Obama.

Your point being what?

"When brown can stick around. When black doesn't have to go to the back. When yellow can be mellow. When the red man can get ahead man. When white embraces right".

I thought Obama was the post racial candidate?

Omigosh, what a very, very odd and totally inappropriate for someone to say. :scared: That's actually quite embarrassing!

When did this occur today? I'm not watching the coverage, so I'm a bit out of it. ;)

I'm sure we can come up with alot of sayings that have been around forever, and were prominent during the civil rights movement, that would certainly be inappropriate today.

While I am sure my parents, who were very involved in the civil rights movement, will appreciate the quote; those individuals who do not recall the marches and speeches of the 60's have a high likelihood of misinterpreting these words to be exclusionary and divisive. It was a poor choice of words.

Erm. Being part "red" myself, it's no worse or better than anything else. (Anyone here still sing "Jesus loves the little children of the world?")

No, that was a misspelling on my part — I guess I don't type that word often. Is there some critical meaning there I am missing, or were you just being petty?

Nah, I was just wonderin' if ya did that on purpose, thought you had one. :confused3

I missed the benediction..I am a christian, and I thought the OPENING prayer was, well, a little specific..

Is that as opposed to Rick Warren excluding non-Christians when he prayed to Jesus? :confused3
Indeed. I found both ministers went beyond the bounds of what is reasonable in terms of providing a spiritual message in a secular context. That's life. We non-Christians have to live with the ignorant disregard of less inclusion-oriented Christians to some extent, at least until we can help them understand how what they say would be perceived by them if they were on the other side of the conversation.

Obama didn't say those things, but you already know that, right?

Shelley, I am assuming that those who heard Obama's inauguration, would have clearly heard the benediction. Didn't you hear it?

Yes, I saw / heard all of it. The point I was making was that your original post was worded to lead those who didn't see / listen believe that it was President Obama who spoke the words you quoted.

It was very misleading, which I believed to be your intent. Otherwise, you would have given proper credit of the quote to Rev. Lowery.

This line is highly offensive!!! "When" white embraces right? Are you saying that white does not embrace right and that day is yet to come? Are you insinuating that white embraces wrong? I would like to know Reverand Bigot...I mean Lowery. Sounds to me like someone who is keeping racism alive to keep his career and name going!!

CHANGE we can believe in?????

I'm still waiting. Hillary, Biden, Emanuel, 3/4 of Bill Clinton's Cabinet. Exactly when does "change" arrive?
