Post Racial President?

Those words were not said by President Obama. They were racist remarks made during the benediction — of all things — by a bitter, dried up, racist fool from the NAACP named Rev. (and I use that term very loosely) Joseph Lowery.

Oh, well that explains it a bit. it was a terrible thing for him to say.

I think the look on Obama's face also was a "what the heck did he just say?" type of look. Sorta like, I could crawl under the table for that one.
I don't hold him accountable but I hope the minister accountable for his own choice to say such a thing.

People born in the 80s or after probably even never heard that saying before.

Or before! Until this thread, I had never heard of it and I was born in 1968. For that matter, I had no idea what they were referencing in regards to "yellow" people, until I read furthern into the thread & someone said it. I wasn't even 100% sure of "red" .

If I were actually watching, I would be one of the people that this would have been the first time I had ever heard that saying and assuming these were the Rev.'s direct words, not some quote from some other time. So, of course, I would take it in today's context.

So, do you think that the preacher went "off script" with those lines? I'm sure that everything was vetted prior to today, so either the Obama people approved of it beforehand or the good Reverend went off the reservation.

I think BO was thinking, "dang, you're going to the **** list, with Rev. Wright!" as soon as that diatribe started out of his mouth.

The benediction was not much of a prayer - it was a long, rambling rant - even BO was looking around while the guy was talking.

And THAT is exactly why the words were spoken today. Because we have come so far.
Everyone (most here) are taking this out of context.

And everyone knows that the most effective prayers, speeches, lessons, poems, are those that the masses have to research for their historical content.:rotfl2:

Uhmmm. . .I just gotta ask this. . .is it actually possible that some of the PP haven't heard this saying before?

It's been a saying for just about forever. . .

This is nothing I had heard before today.

I haven't read the entire thread, but dismissing an entire racial group because of the past mistakes of some seems rather disingenuous. What about the third of a million Union soldiers that helped end slavery through their own ultimate sacrifice through the white voters who placed his candidate on the dias? This man needs to get over his hate; it is really counter-productive.

Personally, I'm annoyed that President Obama gave a shout-out to Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus and Atheists, but didn't acknowledge us UUs or our friends, the Buddhists. There are actually more Buddhists in the United States than Hindus, and UUs are the next largest religious group after the ones that President Obama mentioned. :)

What's a UU?

I started laughing when I heard it and noticed Pres Obamas face....I thought to myself...WHAT did he just say :rotfl2: It had the rhythm of what a hippie would have said....maybe not the words but the rhythm.

I did not find his words offensive as in that he was being racist like REV Wright did...not even close but I think he could have used different words to get his point across. He is an older black man that has lived much of his life dealing with inequality. I found him to be a very proud man of what was about to happen....the first black POTUS.

I got the feeling from what he said, that he is hoping that all in the world can live as one...not as of different colors.

That is what I took from it. Nothing more nothing less.

What's a UU?
Unitarian Universalism is a mainline religious denomination with a more than 400-year history. During that time, our members have included Ralph Waldo Emerson, Louisa May Alcott, Henry David Thoreau, Clara Barton, e. e. cummings, Beatrix Potter, Frank Lloyd Wright, Florence Nightingale, and Adlai Stevenson.
The description of our religion continues here... http://www.uufellowship.org/welcome/whatisuu.php

As I alluded to, earlier, Unitarian Universalism is the sixth largest religion in the United States.

:thumbsup2
President Obama surely will be working to project the message to all Americans that they should move beyond these issues, but it is unreasonable to expect that he will need only to move Caucasians to that post-racial perspective -- he'll also need to move folks like Rev. Lowrey to the post-racial perspective as well. President Obama is there (mostly). Many folks, like myself, are there (mostly). But clearly many people, of all colors and persuasions, are not there, yet.

And to be honest, I don't think President Obama is completely there yet. :)

I can completely respect this post. Very well said and so true IMO.
Who is perfect in these times? Certainly not I.

"Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world. Red and yellow, black and white, they are precious in his sight. Jesus loves the little children of the world."

I can't believe none of the christians here haven't heard, for that matter sang this song as a child. It is standard in every church I have ever attended for the preschoolers first song to the congregation.

Isn't it possible the preacher was just using the theme of this childrens song, only changing it to his own rhyme?

Much ado.

The issue isn't just about the reference to color; that frankly isn't that significant. The issue is the line "white will embrace right".

We sang that all the time in Sunday School. I even had a bracelet with different colored dolls on it representing all the colors.

Several posters have stated they thought the "colors" were racist. You don't get to determine whats significant, Dawn. Really , you don't.
