Possible MS changes to changing names on reservations

Yep! People will likely stop telling them about name switches, if doing so means losing the room.

If they rent the reservation, or if the reservation is for friends and family, and those names change, they won't be allowed to check-in.

Only one person named on the reservation has to stay the same to check in.

I'm sure hematite153 meant that people would stop telling them when the names of their guests staying with them change. I can't imagine the CM at check in would refuse to issue cards in that situation.

FWIW, I do not believe this rumor will turn out to be correct - at least not in the form it has been reported in this thread.

There are many new CMs at MS and IMHO not all have a good understanding of the rules. I'll believe it when it actually happens.

I believe that is likely true, although I've heard of people getting around it and DVC has never asked for my ID at check-in.

However, the MANY examples in this thread of family members changing would not get noted. Someone would just use a room key with their brother's name on it.

It's wrong and it's against the rules, which means that my family would never do it. But, there seem to be a lot of people going to disney who only care about what they can get away with, rather than what the rules say.

And if you can leave one name the same, it isn't a big deal.

If I transfer a one bedroom (and they are allowing five in a room) to my sister's family, I stay on the room, take my husband and two kids off, add her, her husband, and her two kids. She can't get the dining plan for four - if she wants it she's paying for five.

If you go over occupancy (I try to transfer a studio to her), she's going to end up traveling as me (which just means she'll have my name on her room card), I put the room in her husbands name and swap kids. Her husband can check in.

But now Disney has "me" in the room in both scenarios - which makes it much easier on them if they want to hit me with charges for the beautiful art my nephews create in crayon on the wall.

Really? My experience has been just the opposite. I don't think I've ever checked into DVC without showing photo ID. And when we've been on DDP, they have not only wanted to physically see my wife and daughter, they've wanted photo ID from my wife as well.

Maybe I've just been lucky -- or unlucky, depending on your point of view.

We also have been asked for photo ID for all adults for the last few years.

In Dec we checked in as a large group, 4 cards we showed ID, 4 cards... she gave me, 2 were children. The last 4 were in a separate car and had not arrived.

Just back from a December trip. I checked in alone for my family of five. I showed only my ID. We also had the DDP. I was given all 5 cards. Kids were watching TV, and not with me, near me as I checked in, DW was shopping.

In over 14 trips, only the I have ever shown ID, even when DW was next to me at check-in, she was never asked. And no, she is not intimidating or scary ugly!

Really?!? I always check us in and the ressies are always under my name. I don't recall DH ever having to show his ID and he is usually off with the girls waiting in the lobby. We got DDP this NYE and he didn't show his ID... I'm confused!

I've usually been asked for photo ID when checking in but got an additional key for a friend arriving later with no problem (in her name).

This is all just a rumor. I really doubt they will cancel a reservation for changing a guest's name (other than the primary). I've added or changed people many times.

Same experience here as Shan... my wife always checks us in. I've never shown ID to front desk - still get a room key with my name. (Have never gotten DDP though)

They DID include a section on renting in the new planner. On page 11, it has:

"Renting Vacation Points Restriction

Use of the Vacation Homes and recreational facilities for commercial purposes or any purpose other than described in this Declaration is expressly prohibited. Commercial purpose includes a pattern of rental activity or other occupancy by an Owner that the Board (of the Condominium Association), in its reasonable discretion, could conclude constitutes a commercial enterprise or practice.

EXAMPLE: A Member who maintains a web site offering rental of points is clearly renting for commercial purposes; a Member who makes 20 reservations per Use Year in the name of other persons is most likely renting for commercial purposes. These Members are considered to be "commercially active." A person who makes one or two reservations within a Use Year in the name of other persons most likely is not renting for commercial purposes
."

I thought it was interesting that this was included this year. I checked and there was nothing I could find in the old planner in regards to this.

I do hope if this name changing thing is true, it only applies to the primary name on the reservation. We go back and forth with ours, as far as my sister and sometimes my mom. My sister does not get her vacation approval until about 90 days out, so I usually add her at the end. But I am always primary and that would remain the same.

That's typical Disney consistency for you! Maybe you just have an honest face, Shan!

I agree with their logic. The problem is the implementation - consistent implemention of even great ideas has never been a Disney strength.

Unfortunately, some DVC employees in MS will read this and figure, "Anything worth doing is worth doing to excess..." and they'll start making up their own set of rules.

For example, "...you shouldn't even be discussing renting with me. Renting is illegal! :scared1: " As a matter of fact, we've already seen several of those situations in recent weeks.

Hmm....I've always had to show my id but never anyone else in my party even when on the DDP. Sometimes we don't even all arrive at the same time. As long as I was paying the DDP for everyone they didn't care and gave me all the room keys.

We've stayed at the BWV many, many times (October 2006 was the most recent) and I do not recall ever being asked to show photo ID. I am always the one who makes the reservations and checks us in, too. :confused3

I would vote for "unlucky". I have always been asked for ID when I check in but I have NEVER been required to have the other people in my room show up and show their IDs too. That's way over the top, IMO. I have even paid for the DDP on my last 3 stays (BWV, AKV-C & BWV) and at my last BWV stay my DH and DD stayed in the car while I checked it. I would have blown a gasket if I was required to present them at checked in.

Some of the changes (like allowing only the member to call MS) are fine with me ... and I have rented my points in the past. Others, like allowing only ONE transfer IN or OUT of a contract per calendar year, are a huge pain in the butt. I used to have two contracts (bought off the resale market) and it made coordinating those two contracts very difficult. I see the name change restriction rumor to be in the pain in the butt classification and I hate changes that make it more difficult for ME to use my points even if they are designed to make it more difficult for professional renters to abuse the system. I think there are other ways to stop the professional renters without inconveniencing the regular DVC owners.

Completely agree with all of the above. Dh doesnt even know what the checkin desks look like! And we have done DDP in the past.

My 2 UY's have also become a pain to manage because of the transfer limitation. I have 5 points sitting in one that I cant transfer to the other because I would violate the rule. So instead, I will lose those 5 points, despite the fact that I could have used them in my other UY.

Is losing my 5 points really stopping commercial renting?:confused3

we've always been asked for photo id upon check-in; perhaps only if you want charging privledges:confused3

when i booked a ressied for 10/08 (in discussing the DP and whether i'd need to add it for middle "adult" DS jik he can get away & join us the last night before we move to Universal); MS suggested that I add him to the ressie. Said I could remove him at any time (i declined since I didn't want to pay for the DP for the days he wouldn't be in the room).

called back last week when I was toying with the idea of a 4 day DCL cruise instead and letting my oldest DS&wife have the ressie...was told it would be cancelled if myself or DH weren't in the room:mad:

disturbing to me since we have an Oct. UY and tend to travel in June. Factoring in new banking guidelines; it makes me nervous to think what would happen if we had to cancel. While we could rent the points; not as easy to dispose of with banked points, etc. and trying to secure a relatively last minute ressie during the summer for a rental.

Huh? You were told that you couldn't give an existing reservation for October, 2008 to your SON?!? And that it would be canceled if you or your DH were not in the room? Or, am I misunderstanding something?
