Possible First-time rentEE of points?

So I've been a DVC member for 5 years, and I'm thinking about renting out some points for the first time. DH and I made an ADD ON last month while on the Magic doubling our points. We went ahead and banked our points for this year, knowing DH had a hectic workload ahead of him for the next 8 months. We initially thought we'd use our Developer Pts for our Dec trip, but found that to be an issue when we realized how hard it was to get ressies for that time period let alone the 7 month window on the Dev Pts. So, now I'm thinking about renting these points out while they still have a lot of life left in them. Hey, maybe I can sqeeze in another cruise with the cash! So, my question to my fellow DVC'ers that have rented points out......

If your a first-time rentee, what referrals do you have available to your potential renters? I've done research for the past week or 2, and see it's best to be able to offer referrals to you potential renters. I have friends and family, but I'm not thinking that's the right answer. As you can see by my post count, I've been a long time Diser. Any advise you can offer would be a great help!

I'm not a DVC member.....so I'm not a Rentee but a Renter.Last month I completed my second rental transaction from a member. For myself personally as long as the member gives their name, home address, home number(of course verify it as a renter)and is willing to sign a contract(for the protection of both parties)of renting the points that is a strong referral. As a renter I just want to know before any money changes hands that you are in fact a DVC member(in good standings)and will hold up to your end as should the renter.I have read some want to be paid in full beforehand.....but I have dealt with members who have wanted payment after we both have signed the contract and I verified by phone that the ressies were in my name.It has worked well so far.I feel it protected both of us....ressies were made and payment was sent.If a problem the member can change the ressie and if no ressie made the contract would be my savior.Hope this helped out.Good luck.:)

I have rented out a few times and have never been asked for refferals or to sign a contract. when you make the reservation for them you can give them the reservation number so they can verify the reservation was made.

Its great to know there are plenty of us Diser's out there that can be trusted :worship: but you must understand its not just for their protection but yours as well....Even though you give out a ressie number you can still turn around and cancel it days or weeks later and the renter is out money with no ressie....where as the contract also holds the renter to pay you if you make the ressies so you don't lose out (especially if then the points have to be banked etc....).I've gotten an education from others on here who have done it many times and have said time and time again always protect both parties. It just makes sense. :rotfl:

I have rented before and I am also a dvc member. The 1st thing I notice on the rent/trade board about a possible 'rentee' is the amount of posts they have and how long they have been a disboard member. (I would answer an ad from someone with as many posts as you)

From there.....name, address & telephone number.....conversation....terms

Then it is trust until I check in and my reservation is still there :)

Very good....thanks for all the replys. It is reassuring to know. Although I've met a few DISers in person, and have great memories of our times together.....shared fireworks cruises, DCL meets, shore excursions....I'm not sure I was going to be able to get up enough nerve to ask them to back me on something they've never dealt with me on before.

I'm sure if someone wanted to find enough about me, they could do a search on these boards and find it!

Thanks again!

if you have an e-bay acct, or have traded anyone where else on the web that has a FB system, also use those as references.
nothing beats a solid contract tho ;)

btw, MS will no longer speak with renters, but the ressie can be checked a few days prior to arrival by calling the resort directly.
make sure anyone you are considering renting to reads and thoroughly understands the renters' sticky.

btw, after dealing with two potential renters who jeopardized my points with their indecision (some simply do not understand the point system & think any ressie is easily made, & easily cancelled without any reprecussions:headache: , despite it being explained), i "hand selected" from ppl asking for points. i looked for a higher post count and/or join date, someone without unreasonable demands (e.g., $8 pt, 2 bdrm BWV with BW view during F&WF 3 months out), flexibility with resort, and that seemed as tho they understood the process.
over the years i picked three people (no power renter here;) ), all of whom i am more than happy to "go the extra mile" for (daily calls to MS for difficult to obtain rooms, help with dining choices, etc).

i hope the viewpoint of an infrequent rentee helps:)

Thanks for asking the question Princess Tink. I was wondering those things as well though I'm not at the point of wanting to rent. I'm not even sure anyone would trust me just from my post count alone here. I've sold on ebay before but my usernames are not the same. (I use a name de plume for public forums and usernames that reflect my real name for money transactions. If someone really wanted to know me and knew how to use Google they could find plenty about me. I just don't want to make it that easy for someone I might annoy with a spirited forum opinion.)

We rented out some points for the first time this past two months. We only had one person ask for a reference. I did have two references from a non-DVC rentals.

My postings here on these boards have helped with my rentals. In fact three of them cited that in thier intial contact with me.

Here is a couple of tips.

  • Set a price and be firm
  • Be upfront with your renter and provide a phone number for easy contact
  • Have a no refund policy
  • Require a small deposit, it will elimate pretenders (optional)

It takes a bit of effort to rent the points. I don't deal with someone who is too wishy washy, they are just a problem waiting to happen. I don't deal with someone who replies to 15 rental ads trying find the best deal. Renting my points is already a great deal, take it or move on.
