In case you didn't see the announcement from Disney you can now buy a Fuel Rod charger at WDW. When it runs out you simply return it to a Fuel Rod location in the park and get a new fully recharged one (you can recharge it from an electrical outlet as well). And you get to keep it after your trip and can use it again for subsequent visits.

I rarely need to use it since I tend to save my battery by switching to airplane mode whenever I don't need the wifi or data service. It takes a second to turn it on or off and really does a good job of saving the battery.

We usually don't receive any calls when we are on a ride. With our phones, switching to airplane mode isn't an option, since it shuts down everything, even the ability to make and receive a call.
But it is true that you won't receive calls or texts in airplane mode. That is why I turn mine off and on a lot. If I was expecting a call or text, which is important when traveling with family members, then I leave it on. But otherwise I keep if off for periods of time when I don't expect or want to receive messages.
