Porn on Hotel Site - what should I do?

Lollipop's Mom, I'm sorry your daughter was there to see that. You shouldn't have to explain that garbage to a 7 year old. It's sad and a tragic reflection of the world we live in today.

You might want to look into getting a filtered internet service. We have safe-t.net and it really does filter out most objectionable web sites. There are other ones that you could look into, too. For us, it is a good choice.

Let me explain this AGAIN. I guess some people read 1/2 a post and then post an opinion.

IT WAS NOT A POP-UP.
I think the folks that were thinking it was a pop-up were only trying to help. Personally, I appreciate the help they gave you because in the end, it helped me. When jfulcer posted the "mocrosoft" website, my display showed something "native hardcore" I clicked to go to the second page of the thread and BAM! I got a porn site. Because of the help others had tried so graciously to give you, I knew immediately I had a problem. I downloaded ad-aware and got rid of 58 pieces of crap in my computer. It was after that I came back and said it actually said "mocrosoft".

Thanks much to all who posted extraneous information that didn't help the OP but was much help to me!

I agree with the other posters. I don't see how you can expect to be entitled to compensation for what happened.

Is there a reason you won't tell us what the website or hotel is?

I was honestly expecting an apology, and thought that good customer service might offer me a night or 2 for free for what happened.

An apology yes, but you really thought that they should give you something as a sign of good customer service as well?

Why is it that more and more people can't except just an apology (I know they didn't in this case) but when they are given something of monetary value somehow it "makes it all better"?

As someone else stated, if you were unhappy with the response you received, why would you want to stay there? Is it because you could get something out of them for free?

What would you do?

You wrote them about the problem and they responded unsatisfactorily in your opinion. Write them back and tell them so.

What can you do? Shop elsewhere.

You could also invest in a pop-up blocker and a net nanny type program (blocks site with specific key words).

Spyware is insipid, most computers, unless scanned constantly, has some sort of spyware.

I use Webroot Spy Sweeper. Does a pretty good job.

Actually I had spybot but found that Norton does a great job at taking care of it.

I also ran this scenario past Dee last night and he said it was either a pop up or a hacked web site. Something that tries to load then gets overtaken is usually a hack or pop up. Not a lapse in registration.
In either case it is rather ludicrous to expect compensation for something that was apparently not the owner of the website's fault.
I think a thank you was more than sufficient.

I had a heck of time today. Somehow I got a trojan program that was constantly changing my home page to some warning page that the black helicopters were circling overhead and that "they" were tracking everything I was doing on my computer. It took me well over an hour to get rid of that little bugger.

Apparently, there was a bug in the JAVA runtime that allowed this to happen. I found a fix for it by searching google. Nothing I had on my system (Norton, Spybot, or Spy Sweeper) found it. Spy Sweeper did help a little because it was warning me that my home page was being changed.

I think I'll blame YOU!!! :)

When I tried to lend a helping hand with your gaming problem, I reinstalled (not on purpose) the JAVA runtime from that site I gave you. It must have been a site I visited earlier today that loaded the trojan.

It's a shame, these people have so much talent and could put that to good use but NOOOOO, they gotta be *******S!!!

It very well may be some spyware has done this. Or virus. Do you run currently up-to-date anti-virus and anti-spyware software? As for the freebies, unnecessary, IMO.

I was just going to say that.
Do you use adaware? If not, look into it. I can post a link if you need. Otherwise-you can search Lavasoft's Adaware.

I had a similar problem-it may not be the site itself, but something that has loaded into your computer that will redirect you from where you actually want to go.

Ok, fine, how many free nights do you want? ;) BTW, Dee managed to do something with the firewall and I can get out to that site.
I have not had any problems with Java, yet. I did, before I installed Java, have something that came in and kept changing my home page and my search engine. Spybot found that, also, Norton. It took FOREVER to find all the places it hid itself and to finally rid my computer of it.
You are right, there is a lot of talent being wasted out there. But, John, some people just want to be nasty.

I understand
being upset that your daughter saw porn,

I agree with those who recommended adaware, however it's not perfect, I just ran adaware and it found one spyware..I then ran SpyWare Killer and found 12 more..so it helps to have several programs...

I also run CYBERSITTER on both of our PC's, so far we've never had porn pop up on our computer....

a little story about hijacked websites,,,

I have a personal homepage which is very family friendly.
a few years ago I spent a few hours at night updating it. the next morning I recieved a phone call from a female friend, she told me that I might want to check out my homepage as soon as possible.

During the night as I slept, a hacker broke into my site and totally redid my website, all my files were deleted and my site was now filled with porno pics{very bizarre ones I might ad}.

I tried to log in and delete it, but the hacker had changed my password, and my email listing with geocities, so I couldn't even request a new password thru the forgot password option..I had to contact geocities , tell them what happened and convince them that I was indeed the webmaster for that site, after a few hours I finally got them to let me in to the site so I could delete all the porn and rebuild my site.

I was embarrassed, I was angry,,
did I owe my female friend anything because she was subjected to
something that offended a sweet Southern lady..??/

did I do something wrong by not knowing that my website had been hacked while I slept,,,,NO,,

I don't think it's realistic to expect anyone to monitor their website 24-7

You know, it ticks me off more and more every day to see people wanting some form of monetary compensation for every slight inconvenience they run into.

No wonder the cost of everything now is skyrocketing, with everyone wanting compensation for every little thing - its a wonder businesses can stay alive. :(

How the heck did I ever live through the first 37 yrs of my life without asking for something for every gross thing I saw

ITA! I have no problem with someone being compensated for something that is truly wrong or bad. But expecting free nights because of this is absurd.

However, this is what entitlement mentality has brought us to.

And some people look for half an excuse to get something for nothing. In this case, you don't even have half...there's no earthly reason for the hotel chain to owe you any compensation.

You asked for opinions, you got them. If what you wanted was for people to agree with you despite what they honestly thought, you should have said so.

And this makes the hotel owe you something why??? Looks like you need to put a call into Russia for your freebies...that is if you can get the correct phone number. Then again, you probably wouldn't care for what they have to offer.;)

If running into a porn site on the web is so upsetting to you, I suggest you stay off the internet. It happens all the time...no biggie.

NO BIGGIE???? I think it is very big! Just because it happens all the time doesn't mean it is no big deal! I believe that websites like that should require some sort of agreement to be clicked on before they open, just like some of the "secure website" agreement things you have to click on when you use your credit card online. THat way, if you really wanted to see that website you could, but if you got on it by mistake you wouldn't have to be insulted by being forced to confront their words/images. I think this is a tragedy that we allow this to happen so easily. My 8 year old couldn't buy a can of beer or a box of cigarettes, but heaven forbid she accidentally mistypes a domain name, she could be viewing images that NO ONE in their right mind should EVER be forced to view!

I do agree with most posters, that assuming that the hotel was not in any way connected with this site popping up, it is not their fault and therefore they owe no compensation to this person. But from a customer service point of view, it certainly wouldn't hurt them to offer something, least of all an apology. I know, I know, it's not their fault and they had no control over it. But an apology would have meant so much at that point.

Let me just say one more word..... FILTER. Get a good filter for your computer to try and prevent these things from happening. Go to www.afafilter.net to start..........................P

But the first line of defense against these unwanted intrusions is you, the parent.

Use the technology that's available to prevent this from invading your home.

Or, you could get rid of the Internet altogether. Some people don't like what they see on TV so guess what, they don't have a TV.

But there's the problem ... one must be willing to assume the responsibility for actually performing these tasks. It's so much easier to blame someone (anyone) else for what happens than to take the time to prevent it in the first place.

Then there's the added side benefit of all the freebies and comps you get or believe you are entitled to as the result of these little inconveniences. If you use technology to prevent it, you run the risk of losing all the freebies and comps. :earseek:

MeanLaureen,

I now understand your username;) By the way ITA

I believe an acknowledgement and correction of the error is sufficient.

To the OP,

I believe you unknowingly walked into one of the many viper nests here on the DIS. Let me give you a cheatsheet about those things not to ask/day.

These are red for a reason. Stay away from them they're HOT.

1. Do not ask for compensation in the form of free upgrades/nights for an inconvenience (I believe you now know that one by heart)

2. Do not ask if you can fit more than the legal number of persons in a room (Go ahead and do it but don't ask about it here)

3. Do not ask if 10 year old refillable mugs that you saw posted on ebay are OK to use on your next visit. In fact do not even string together the words refillable and mug in the same sentence just to be safe.

4. Do not ask if you can smoke on the balcony of a non smoking room.

5. Do not ask which of your major appliances you can take on your trip to use in your room. This especially applies to crockpots, george foreman grills, microwaves or your washing machine.

6. Do not ask if you can/should nurse your baby in public. Public includes any place that someone besides the baby can see what your doing.

7. Do not ask anything about one person saving your place in line while the other 20 in your party go to the bathroom.

8. Another set of words you never want to put together is Towel and Animal. If you see one consider yourself lucky but don't ask if you can take it home or if your entitiled to a zoo of towel animals because you spent a lot on your trip.

9. Any thread starting out, "My vacation was ruined because...." is bound to be trouble. Misery does not love company.

10. Never get into threads that refer to parents as breeders, kids as rug creeps or people without children as selfish, self centered, uncaring or child haters.

11. Last but not least do not ask about any situation where you're going to do what you want but you'd like to have 50,000 people help you to justify it.

There are many more of these but I thought I'd give you a heads up. Feel free to add to the list

Lanshark -- I think you need to post your red letter list on its own and have the mods stick it at the top of all the boards (particularly the resort board) for this to reach as many DISers as possible!!:sunny:

Nice list, Lanshark. I'd like to add one more big rule:

As a poster on the DIS, one must never, ever make a mistake; never, ever show anger, despair, unhappiness and anything that may resemble a human emotion other than perfectness. If the member chooses to disregard the above advice, he/she must prepared for a group of people to swoop down and publically point out the mistake, humiliate, torment and berate anyone and everyone associated with the offending thread/post/person. The offending poster must realize that he/she wrote it and must stand by it for possibly years into the future. Its the property of the group now, its theirs to comment on and ultimately pick apart til the meaning of your sentence is long lost in a barrage of hatefulness.

Rules to live by, unless you like being knocked around....... Some do, so take the above for whatever its worth.

(and btw, my opinion is that its unfortunate that the OP's daughter saw the porn website, but the OP is not entitled to any sort of compensation)
